Course Description:

This half credit semester course focuses on four objectives: to familiarize students with film genres, terminology, and techniques; to analyze film through literary modes; to sharpen critical analysis of all aspects of film; and to instill an appreciation of film as a cultural medium and an art form, not just entertainment.

Grading Scale:

Grades are calculated using total points. There is no explicit point total. Below, I have listed a number of the tasks and assessments that will be given point values.

← Film notes and viewings

← Class and small groups discussions

← Quizzes

The teacher reserves the right to refuse or deduct points from any and all late or plagiarized work.

Film Viewing:

For each film that is viewed, you will receive 20 points. Sounds easy; however, to receive the required points you must actively view the film which means you may not sleep, complete work for another class, read a magazine, talk to your neighbor, etc. If I observe you disengaged for the film, you will receive a 65% for that film viewing. You may stay after school to re-watch the film and receive a 75%. If you are absent, you can only receive the points for a film by staying after school to view the part you missed. You either uncompromisingly view the full film for every day that it is shown for 20 points or you cannot receive full points.

Materials Needed:

☺ Writing utensil

☺ Class binder for this course only

Student Absence:

It is the responsibility of the student to complete all work missed because of time absent. An appropriate amount of time to complete work is outlined in the student handbook.

Classroom Expectations:

☺ Come to class prepared to learn— you should ALWAYS bring a writing utensil and your binder.

☺ Demonstrate respect for yourself, your teacher, your classmates, and school property.

☺ Of course, all CHS student handbook procedures do apply.

Food and Drink:

Food and drink are not permitted in class. Please leave your food and drink items in your locker BEFORE you enter the classroom. The only exception is a water bottle or a note of justification from a parent or the school nurse.

Exam Procedure:

When tests and quizzes are administered, complete silence is expected from the time the exam is passed out until the final exam is collected. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a loss of points.

Restroom, Locker, and Office Visits:

Please coordinate such visits during study hall or in between classes rather than during class. If you must leave the classroom for any reason, you should sign out and use your CHS student handbook as a hall pass.

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Your child is taking the elective class Literature of a Theme: Film at Central High School. I wish to make you aware that all of the planned films are rated PG or PG-13 except two which are rated R. The R-rated films I plan to show are Francis Ford Coppola’s critically acclaimed films The Godfather Part I and II. The Godfather regularly appears on critics’ Top 100 Movies lists—The American Film Institute ranked it the third greatest American movie ever made, second only to Citizen Kane and Casablanca—and garnered numerous Oscars, including Best Picture in 1972. If you would prefer that your child view a PG or PG-13 movie instead of such films as The Godfather Part I and II please indicate your preference on the form below, and I will be happy to provide alternatives.

Before I proceed with your child’s educational experience in viewing, analyzing, and discussing films, I would like you to sign this form and date it as your assurance that you have read this letter. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at the high school 793-2111 ext. 5115 or email me at kstern@scsd.k12.pa.us. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Stern
