FLMNH Summer Camp InternshipPosition Title: Public Programs Summer Camp InternDescription: The Florida Museum of Natural History’s Education Department is seeking intern teacher assistants for our Summer Camp program. Interns will work under supervision of the Public Programs Staff and a Summer Camp Teacher and be responsible for assisting the teacher with development (prior to the start of camp) and implementation of half-day, week-long summer camp sessions. Summer Camps at the Florida Museum are designed for campers enrolled in grades 1-6 for the 2014-2015 school year. Camps provide hands-on, inquiry-based opportunities to learn through activities and Museum resources. There are seven weeks of camp, starting on June 9th and end August 1st. Each week-long camp session is half day (morning or afternoon), and has a different science or natural history-related theme. Morning sessions run from 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and afternoon sessions are 1:00 – 4:30 p.m. Each intern will be paired with a teacher and camp session for each week. Each intern must assist with a minimum of 3 complete camp weeks throughout the summer.Hours per Week: One week of summer camp teaching is 20 hours within the camp classroom and will include time communicating and working with the Summer Camp teacher beforehand. The total time commitment for each week will be approximately 25 hours. Summary of Duties: Work with the Summer Camp Teacher to create activities and materials to facilitate learning within your camp session based on a provided Curriculum Guide. Implementation of developed material for a camp of up to 20 students.Assist with general Summer Camp duties within your camp session. Assist with mentoring Junior Volunteers (ages 12-17) who will be with your camp session.Assist with management of the camp classroom.Preferred Skills: Interns should have excellent written and oral communication skills. Interns should be goal-oriented and able to meet deadlines. They should have strong leadership skills, enjoy working with all ages, and be comfortable with classroom management. Previous experience working with children and families, developing and implementing lessons, and knowledge of learning modalities and age ranges of cognitive skills are preferred. Qualifications: Applicants should be an undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing, with an interest in informal science education. This internship is designed for students with a wide variety of majors including education, natural sciences, and museum studies. It is preferred that students will also be pursuing this internship in conjunction with course requirements from a degree program or as an independent study credit.
