Select three books or ebooks closely related to your chosen topic. To locate books in the ORU Library, search the online catalog. Modify the search strategy you have used in the past by making it less specific, since books are generally broader in scope than journal articles.

Select three articles related to your chosen topic from three different Journals or Periodicals (or eJournals). To locate journal articles, search the online Journals Database doing a subject keyword search using the main words in your Thesis Statement.

Select three articles related to your chosen topic from three different theological and/or biblical encyclopedias or dictionaries. Do NOT use a general encyclopedia such as Encyclopedia Britannica. To locate encyclopedias, search the online catalog doing a subject keyword search using one of the following: church*, theolog*, Christian*, religi*, Bible, or missions with either encyclopedias or dictionaries. Also, see the handout, “ORU Theological Reference Books,” that was passed out at the Library Lecture by the Reference Librarian.

In creating the Annotated Bibliography, cite each book, journal article, or reference work according to Turabian format (see examples in the Bibliographic Examples Section of the Research and Writing Manual, Vyhmeister, chapters 16, 19, 22, and Turabian, chapters 15-17). After the citation, double-space; and then, write the annotation. The annotation should include two paragraphs: one which summarizes the source, and one which evaluates how the source is of particular interest or relevance to your topic. If in reading the source, questions or issues arise which you are interested in pursuing as a focal point of your research paper, include them as well. If you use quotations from the source, be sure to include the page number(s) involved in parentheses after the quote. Do not include items in the bibliography that you feel are of little or no relevance to your research topic.

Use 12-point Times New Roman font. Each citation and its corresponding annotation should be on a separate sheet of paper. A format example follows:

Single-space the bibliographic citation, indenting the second and following lines five spaces (or .5”—hanging paragraph format).

Double-space the annotation, indenting each paragraph .5”. Observe margins specified in the Research and Writing Manual and ensure a minimum of three sentences per paragraph. Be sure to staple this sheet to the front of the assignment as the Title Page to the assignment.
