Standard: People and Societies

Benchmark:

A. Compare practices and products of North American cultural groups

B. Explain the reasons people from various cultural groups came to North America and the consequences of their interactions with each other

Learning Objectives:

1. Compare some of the cultural practices and products of various groups of people who have lived in the local community including:

a. artistic expression

b. religion

c. language

d. food

2. Compare the cultural practices and products of the local community with those of other communities in Ohio, the United States, and countries of the world

3. Describe the settlement of patterns of various cultural groups within the local community

Instructional Strategies:

As a class, we would discuss the different groups in the local community as far as Toledo- Ohio- United States. Then, students would be taken to the library to use: books, encyclopedias, computers, movies, etc to research different ethnic groups around the world. A worksheet with at least 10 different ethnic groups from different countries including the United States would be given, and students would have the opportunity to choose three of the ten to research. When brought back to class, we would have an open discussion of all information that was discovered.

Possible Technologies:

Videos would be used to show different religious ceremonies for some of the countries on the worksheet. Students would also use computers for the internet to read different things on the countries/cultures/communities they chose.

Assessment Method:

In the beginning of this lesson students are given an activity book made up of many different worksheets. At the end of each day, the student should be able to use what they learned in class, and previous classes to do the activity for the specific day. At the end of this lesson, this activity should be completely done and would be handed in as a test grade.

*If there are any questions that a student might ask on one of the worksheets, the student can simply put a question mark by the question, and when I grade I will fill in the answer for them, and tell them to let me know if he/she doesn’t understand. For the most part, the student should be able to fill in the activity book completely.
