left000 CHURCHThe Makeup: Generations Sermon TenMESSAGE: The different age groups that make up the church of the Living God should appropriately appreciate, respect, and honor one another.WHY SHOULD I CARE? Before a church family can be strong and ambitious for Christ they need to recognize their need for what the generations have to offer.ACTIVITY:If you are an elder, name 3 things you value about the younger generation. If you are a younger, name 3 things you value about the older generation. This is Thanksgiving!TEXT:Context- Human author? (Paul) Recipient? (Timothy) What is its relevance? (1 Timothy 3:14-16)Text- 1 Timothy 5:1-2 (KJV) 1 ?Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 2 ?The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. About the Elders Respect them- (to esteem; treat with propriety or consideration; to regard as inviolable)Shown in the terms “father” and “mother”- One would seek to have the kind of respect as patterned in the traditional parenting sense. You would hold them up high and treat them the way their position of parent demands.Revere them- (Venerate, admire)Seen in “Rebuke not” (i.e. don’t “chastise”)- One would not dream of scolding them because they admire them so much.Honor them- (respectful regard; treat with courtesy; dignify, ennoble; to worship)Seen in the term “intreat” (i.e. “to call near”)- One would not wish to publicly embarrass an elder who was doing wrong. They want to make sure all others think the best of them and protect their reputation.About the YoungersTreat them like familyAs seen in “brethren” & “sisters”. A common designation in those days for countrymen or close relationships. People who were teammates and supporters.Treat them with respectAs seen in “purity”. The women are not be seen as objects that are to be manipulated and used for fleshly purposes. This implies a respect for them.About The Church- (Citing “Craig Groeschel Urges Generations to Set Aside Resentment” by Alex Murashko Christian Post 4/21/2012)The issue today: The older will say the youngers are arrogant and the younger would say they would do things differently if they were in charge.Elders-Praise- Everything we able to do to make a difference for Jesus is a direct result of the sacrifices and leadership of those who have come before us. They possess wisdom that is their biggest gift to the next generation. They are needed so much.Issue- They sometimes fear, resent, or judge the youngers. One of the reasons is they have become a bit insecure about their relevance & ability.Calling- “If you are not dead, you are not done. Your best days can be now as you invest in the next generation”. How?Don’t delegate tasks, delegate authorityBe authentic. Don’t try to act like a younger or be cool.Youngers-Praise- “you are the most cause-driven, mission-minded generation perhaps of all time”. Money is not the issue with you. You want to make a difference. Issue- It is scientifically studied and proven that generationally right now your group feels entitled. It is because you were over-protected, & over-provided for“You often overestimate what God wants to do with you in the short run, but you underestimate what He wants to do through you in the long run.”Calling- They need the elders in a BIG WAY. How?Submit to them. Fall under their leadership.Honor them.ACTIVITY- Thoughtfully list a way you could treat the other generation better…FUNCTION: Let God RepairBe Thankful for the other generationHumbly Seek God’s help in repairing the generational rift for Jesus’ gloryHumbly Seek God’s help in repairing the sinfulness of your own heart and actions ................
