They will have the same amount of time they were absent to complete the missing work. When the student returns, ,they should return the folder to the place where its kept. When a student is absent, their neighbors or table mates will place all work passed out that day/those days in the “We Missed You” folders. Assembly ProcedureAll students will line up in alphabetical order sometimes Boy/Girl order. Classrooms will sit down in assigned order according to grade level and the teacher’s last name. Students will sit on the floor in front of the stage with their legs and hands folded in front of them leaving space between themselves and the students in front of them to allow students to walk through the aisle.Students will remain quiet while students are receiving awards. They will remain silent the entire time and will be prompted to applaud after a group of awards have been given out. Attention GetterWe use “Whole Brain” learning in the classroom and encompass this in our attention getting techniques. Examples include, but are not limited to: “1, 2, 3, eyes on me” - “Hocus Pocus” - “First Position” - and “Knees and Nose towards the …..” The students will respond: “1.2 - Eyes on you!” - “Everybody Focus” - -students sit with posture and hands folded in front of themselves, feet flat (non-verbal response) - and “Knees and Nose towards the….CelebrationsEach week we celebrate one student on Friday for being “Student of the Week” This person is selected based on the behavior chart for the week and who has earned this by exceptional Character Counts behavior. *13-14 - The students were awarded with “George” from Curious George and were able to take this stuffed animal home for the weekend. They were to complete a form that talked about what they did with George over the weekend. Birthdays Record all students birthdays and let students choose a gift from the grab bag as well as sing the Happy Birthday song. The grab bag will be inexpensive gifts purchased at the beginning of the year or from donations. Birthdays will becelebrated on the last Friday of each month unless school is not in session.End of the QuarterStudents who work hard to achieve their predetermined goal will join in to celebrate achievements at the end of each quarter. Celebrations will be awards ceremony where the parents are all invited. Attendance, Honor Roll, and Principal’s List awards are handed out and students earn an extra coupon for something (depending on what has been donated to teachers to pass out).*13-14 - Peter Piper Pizza awards were given to teachers to which they were able to pass out to students for awards. *13-14 - The principal’s list students were awarded with donuts with the principal. Withdrawing StudentThe office may request that all grades are current for this student so that they may send transcripts to the new school. Ensure that all school textbooks and library books have been returned to the school. The student should pack up all personal items and take them home on their last day of attendance. Classroom Hand SignalsRaised hand: Questions; One finger extended – Sharpen Pencil, first two fingers crossed - Restroom, Students who raise a closed fist - Drink Classroom Supplies and MaterialWhen students are using classroom supplies and materials (e.g.. books, desk, folders) they will not mark on them without teachers permission or damage them intentionally. Once students have completed the use, or at the end of the year, students will correctly put the material/supplies back in its proper place prior to leaving the classroom.There is a student materials station that the students manage and keep stocked. The students have access to this as needed; however can lose privilage if that student is being wasteful, misusing, or intentionally destroying shared materials (i.e. pencils, erasers, notebook paper - etc) Classroom VisitorsIf a teacher or student comes to visit the classroom, no student may address the teacher(s) or students(s). The visitor is coming to class to visit the teacher or to clarify with the teacher why they have come to visit. Students are to remain on task unless they are being addressed. Concerns Not Related to InstructionClassroom concerns will not be addressed during instructional time. If a student has a concern with another student or the classroom they must express that concern before school, during recess, or after school otherwise keep all concerns to themselves. If there is an immediate interference with instruction, learning, or well-being - the teacher will facilitate a “Make Your Day” meeting with the students outside the classroom. The student uses the sentence frame: “It interfered with my [well being, safety, or learning] when you” TSW state the concern with the other student. The other student is then given the opportunity to respond. The teacher only facilitates this and keeps it objective. Electronic DevicesStudents may not use electronic devices during class unless the teacher gives explicit instruction to do so. Students must receive approval from the classroom teacher to use an electronic device to read or for research. While using it, the device must remain on top of the desk. No technology is to be used for personal entertainment (e.g. music, texting, games). If students are defiant when asked to put them away, teachers should contact parents. Entering the Classroom.When students enter the classroom they place their chair at their desk, empty their backpacks, place backpacks into totes at the back off the room (boys/girls), turn in/take out homework, sit down quietly and begin soft start. If they finish early, they will work on a “What to do when Done” activity.The teacher will have morning soft start objectives posted on the board to alert the students to what they need to be doing after they enter. Greeting StudentsStudents must be greeted daily inside the classroom. Students must feel validated that their presence is important. Students will be given their bellwork for the week as they enter the classroom. The simple step of greeting students is seen to raise test scores 21%. PencilsThere is a pencil cup that holds sharpened pencils each morning. The students’ have a job of sharpening pencils at the end of the day. When getting a “new” pencil, the student must return a pencil. The students return all pencils to the cup at the end of the day. SubstitutesCreate three days of emergency sub plans. Have a split class list on file. If time permits (more than 24 hour notice), create a detailed emergency sub-plan and give students a preview of the objectives and products that must be submitted at the end of each day that the sub is there. Remind students of the expectation while a sub is in the classroom. Notify all parents that their children will have a substitute. Test and Assignment CorrectionsStudents who achieve less than 75 percent on a test or an assignment will be required to self-correct and return the test/assignment:Math: All test and assignment corrections must be done on a separate sheet of paper. On the paper you must rewrite the original math question or problem and the answer and any other necessary requirements to receive full credit. Attach the corrections to the back of the assignment or test. Reading: All corrections on assessments must be cited from the text next to the question. All self-corrections must be completed in blue ink. These corrections must be turned in to the teacher no later than 2 weeks after the date of the test. Teacher will have the corrections due date on the front page of each test.Grading is done in red ink, self-corrections are done by the student in blue ink. Transitioning to other locationsStudents will quietly line up and walk as a class to their next their destination. Students will line up in the same order facing forward with a space between one another. Students will not get out of line to use the restroom, get water, or to visit with a friend. As students walk by, no student is to give “five” to them. Using the RestroomStudents will be given two popsicle sticks each morning with their assigned number on it. In order for students to use the restroom, he/she must raise their popsicle stick to indicate to the teacher they need to use restroom and wait for teacher to acknowledge and give permission to go. Students should never ask to go to the restroom during direct instruction or when the teacher is doing Dibels progress monitoring with another student. Prior to leaving, the student must place their popsicle stick in the “can” and sign out, and take the bathroom pass with them. Visiting the NurseThere are around 1,000 students on campus and one nurse. To be fair to the nurse, we must limit the number of visits, if possible, and take care of ourselves as much as we can. The nurse can not see students for such issues:● Nails● Allergies● Loose teeth● Paper cuts● Home injuries (parents must nurse these)● Sore limbs and skin● Chapped lips● Dry, itchy eyes. The nurse is not a certified physician. If you have any major medical issues go to the doctor. However, if the student must see the nurse, he/she must have a pass from the teacher and the pass must be signed by the nurse. (Some students try to see the nurse during transitions or recess, there should be a consequence if the student went without a pass. If a student is injured during recess, the student should report to the Teacher on Duty prior to going to the nurse. That teacher will determine whether or not the student should go to the nurse and that teacher should give the student a pass or alert the teacher immediately. Visiting the OfficeIf you want to visit the office you must first clear it with the classroom teacher. All Bullying Reports or other incident reports must be completed by the student, and reviewed by the teacher before any student visits an administrator. Students must be given a pass and have the pass signed by someone in the office. Instructional Plan Soft Start Create bellwork based on previous skills taught and future skills to be taught. First 100 days will be based on Math Minutes and Grammar Minutes. Each “Minute” is 10 questions and should be completed before the last bell rings. Start to the dayWe immediately take attendance, close backpack totes, erase the board, ensure that all bathroom sticks have been passed out from the day before, check the weather/date/days, start projector, and announcements. Once the announcements have concluded, we say the pledge, preamble, and the Countryside Pledge. The students should get a red pen for grading minutes. The students will trade and grade, mark the score in the “clock” and then pass folder back. The student will record their score on the “Minute Journal” Closing Every lesson will end with a closing. Each day will end with a closing. The closing may vary and be explicit or indirect. The teacher will decide based on the lesson. Some days may include a “ticket out the door” or an oral response, or journaling in their composition books for reflective learning. Grading Homework /Classwork - 10% Weekly Quizzes - 30% Final Exam/Benchmark (Best) - 60% Include WritingAll subjects will have a daily writing assignment (explain the steps of/to…, explain how to…, summarize the text, jigsaw an article, etc.). All writing does not need to be graded. Missing AssignmentsIf students do not turn in assignment/homework, the teacher will email parents to alert them of the issue. The teacher will advise the student of the timeline in which the assignment is due and make specific directions as to how to turn them in. All late work/homework is due to the “blue basket” before 8:15 am, this includes all self-corrections. Parent NotificationAll parents will receive Weekly email updates. For any parents who do not have email, the teacher will print out the email and send it home with the student. This email will include weekly information for the class, class needs/wants, upcoming events, and school information/events coming. Personal emails will be sent as needed for behavior praises or needs improvement, concerns, follow-up, and social behaviors that need to be reported to parents. Email has become the quickest, most efficient form of communication. The teacher will also utilize Remind101 as a tool to text parents quick notes about “next day” or very important messages. Depending on how many parents sign up usually dictates how much information is sent using this technology model. Classroom Culture Pledge of Allegiance - “ I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty, and justice for all.” Classroom Pledge - “The vision of Countryside is that ALL students are successful readers, writers, thinkers, and problem solvers.” Preamble - “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights governments are instituted among men, deriving from their just powers from the consent of the governed.” We use “Whole Brain” learning techniques, music… A LOT OF MUSIC! All music must be prescreened and absolutely no foul language, innuendos, or inappropriate lyrics. Music should be used as a motivator, fun tool for transitions, or stretching to ‘wake up’ each morning. Rachel’s Challenge/Acts of KindnessAfter discussions, the teacher will encourage students to add a link to the Kindness Chain. Classes will challenge one another to see whose link is the longest at the end of each quarter. The winning class will receive an End of the Day celebration. ................
