Focus of Group Counseling Sessions

Keep focus on members: don’t allow members to discuss others outside of the group; instead focus on what the member can/cannot change

Keep members specific: don’t allow members to generalize (everybody, nobody, etc.)

Avoid leading questions: from both the leader and other members

Establishing the focus:

State what the topic or activity will be

Use visual aids

Use chalkboard or flip chart

Draw picture to represent discussion

Members can list, write, or draw

Write a stimulus word or phrase on large sheet of paper in middle of

group

Use handouts

Use an empty chair in middle of group

Use rounds and dyads

Holding the focus: sticking with what is happening

When: topic is relevant and interesting; person is serving the purpose

of the group

How long: about 5 minutes on one person; budget your time

How to hold: cut off, group exercise

Shifting the focus: when the group needs to change focus

Deepening the focus: need to deepen to a level that is productive and meaningful; used during middle phase

Ask thought-provoking questions

Ask members to share on a more personal level

Be more intense

Conduct an intense exercise

Confront members if interfering with group
