FIRST DRAFT

EXT- DEMONASVILLE, NEW YORK- AFTERNOON

It is a beautiful day in early September. A green sedan with a U-haul attached to it drives down the street. It pulls into a driveway of a house that has a SOLD sign on the front lawn. LUCILLE REDDING, 26, gets out of the car, and looks at her new house.

In the house next to Lucille, her new next-door neighbor, INGRID BLAINE, 39, comes out and sees her. She walks over to Lucille’s lawn.

INGRID

Are you the one moving in here?

LUCILLE

Yes, I am.

INGRID

Hi, I’m Ingrid Blaine. I live next

Door.

LUCILLE

Nice to meet you, I’m Lucille.

Ingrid’s teenage daughter, MADELINE “MADDY” BLAINE, 15, comes out looking for her mother. Her older sister, ERIN BLAINE, 17, comes out to find her as well.

INGRID

Guys, come meet our new neighbor.

Madeline and Erin walk over to her mom’s side.

INGRID

These are my daughters, Madeline

And Erin. Maddy, Erin, this our

new neighbor, Lucille.

MADELINE

Nice to meet you.

ERIN

It’s nice to meet you.

LUCILLE

Nice to meet you too.

INGRID

Well, if you need any help moving in

Or finding your way around, just let

Us know.

LUCILLE

Thanks, I really appreciate.

Ingrid and Madeline walk back into their house. Lucille opens the U-Haul truck, and starts to get out some boxes.

CUT TO:

INT- LUCILLE’S LIVING ROOM- NIGHT TIME

Lucille has popcorn in the microwave. She is organizing her lesson plan for the next day. She’s making up a vocabulary worksheet for the book, To Kill a Mockingbird. She hears loud music coming from outside.

She gets up, and looks out her window to see where the music is coming from. It’s coming from the second house across the street. A drunken kid comes out, and stumbles onto Lucille’s lawn.

DRUNKEN KID

Wait, where the fuck is I?

Lucille gets out her cell phone and calls the police. The Operator picks up on the other line.

OPERATOR

Hello, Operator.

LUCILLE

Hi, my name is Lucille Redding. I

Have a drunken kid on my lawn and

I’m not exactly sure what to do.

OPERATOR

Would you like me to get the police

To come down.

LUCILLE

Yes, that would be great.

OPERATOR

All right, I’ll need to know your

Address please.

LUCILLE

63 Rockland Drive.

OPERATOR

All righty then. I’ll place a call

And the police will be over in about

Five or ten minutes.

LUCILLE

Thanks so much. Good bye.

She hangs up the phone and puts it back in her pocket. She goes and sits down by her front steps. The drunken kid gets up and staggers over to her. He falls to the ground, and pulls himself up onto the steps next to Lucille.

DRUNKEN KID

Hellooo!! Where the fuck is I?!

LUCILLE

Could you stop shouting please?

CUT TO:

INT- BLAINE LIVING ROOM- SAME TIME

Madeline is watching TV. She hears the drunken kid, and looks out the window. Ingrid is walking upstairs to go to bed.

INGRID

What is it, honey?

MADELINE

It’s just Paul. He’s drunk again.

INGRID

Oh boy. Good night Madeline.

MADELINE

Good night, mom.

Ingrid goes upstairs. Madeline goes back to watching TV. She passes by Erin, who is in the bathroom dying her dark hair auburn.

ERIN

What is it, mom?

INGRID

Nothing, just Paul getting drunk

At a house party again.

ERIN

Oy, not again.

INGRID

What are you doing to your hair

This time?

ERIN

I thought auburn would be nice.

You know, it’s bright, yet it’s

Also very calm.

INGRID

Just don’t get anything pierced,

Honey. Good night.

ERIN

Night, mom.

Ingrid walks on to her room. Erin continues to dye her hair.

CUT TO:

EXT- LUCILLE’S HOUSE- SAME TIME

The drunken kid looks at Lucille.

DRUNKEN KID

Hey, you’re kinda hot. You want to

Go somewhere?

LUCILLE

Uh, no.

DRUNKEN KID

Come on. You know you want some of

This.

LUCILLE

No, I really don’t.

DRUNKEN KID

Are you sure?

LUCILLE

Yes.

DRUNKEN KID

Really?

LUCILLE

Yeah, positive.

Lucille stands up. The drunken kid inches toward her.

DRUNKEN KID

Do it for me, then. I’m horny, and

I need some lovin’ now.

The drunken kid grabs onto Lucille’s ankle. She tries to shake him off.

LUCILLE

Let go of me!

Just then, the police pull up to Lucille’s house.

LUCILLE

Oh thank God.

She quickly shakes him off, and walks over the two cops.

COP #1

Evening, miss. What can I do for

You?

LUCILLE

This guy just showed up on my lawn

About fifteen minutes ago. I’m not

Sure who he is, and I didn’t know

what to do.

COP #2

Don’t worry maam. You did the right

thing.

They walk over to the drunken kid, who is lying on the steps.

COP #1

Okay, Paul. Time to drive you home.

DRUNKEN KID

Hi, Steve. How’s your wife?

COP #1

She’s fine.

They take him to the car and get him inside. They get into the car, and drive off.

COP #2

Have a good night, miss.

LUCILLE

Good night, and thank you.

DRUNKEN KID

Ocifer, I swear. I’m sotally tober.

She watches the car go off, and goes back inside her house.

FADE TO BLACK

CUT TO:

EXT- DEMONASVILLE HIGH SCHOOL- NEXT MORNING

It’s the first day of school. Everyone is heading in to school, and meeting up with friends they haven’t seen since last year.

There is a group of skaters by the front of the school. One of them skates off of the steps three feet from the ground. All the other skaters cheer him on.

SKATER

Dude, that was sick!!

Lucille pulls up into the school parking lot, and gets out of the car. She gets her things out of the car, closes the door, and heads over to the school.

She pushes her way through the crowd of kids. A skater kid whizzes by her, and she suddenly stops in her tracks.

CUT TO:

INT- SCHOOL HALLWAY- MORNING TIME

Madeline walks up to her best friend, BLAKE REYNOLDS, 14-16, and puts her hand over his eyes.

BLAKE

Is it… Oprah?

MADELINE

Nice try.

She takes her hand away, and they give each other a hug. These two are as close as anyone can possibly be. Blake closes his locker and they walk over to their first period English.

BLAKE

Did you do the summer reading?

MADELINE

Yeah. It was really easy.

Blake gives her an incredulous look.

MADELINE

Okay, I went on to spark notes,

but I did read up to chapter 18

before stopping.

BLAKE

Wow, eighteen whole chapters. I’m

So proud of you.

INT- LUCILLE’S CLASSROOM- MORNING TIME

The bell for first period rings. Lucille does some last minute room organizing before everyone comes in. She writes

her name on the board as 16 students pile into the classroom. She turns around, and takes a deep breath.

Madeline looks up and sees her new neighbor, Lucille.

MADELINE

Lucille! I mean, Ms…

LUCILLE

Redding.

MADELINE

Ms. Redding. I didn’t know you

Were going to be working here.

Blake looks at Lucille, and an immediate crush starts to develop.

BLAKE

You know her?

LUCILLE

Well, I’m sure I’ll love having

You in my class, Madeline.

She gives Madeline a warm smile.

LUCILLE

All right, class. Take a seat, please.

Everybody finds a seat and quiets down. Lucille goes to the front of the classroom.

LUCILLE

Hi, everyone. My name is Ms. Redding.

Here’s my name up on the board.

She points to her name on the board.

LUCILLE

I’ll be your English teacher for

The year and I hope we have a lot

Of fun.

A girl in the second row, Amy, raises her hand.

LUCILLE

Yes, and what’s your name?

AMY

It’s Amy. What happened to Mr. Mizzen?

LUCILLE

He got a new job up in Mason county.

Any other questions?

The class is quiet.

LUCILLE

Okay, then we can start our first

Book of the year. To Kill a Mockingbird.

She goes to her desk and grabs a handful of books, and hands them out to everyone. Madeline takes her book, and looks at it. She opens it up, and flips through the pages.

LUCILLE

We’ll be covering this book, along

With The Lord of the Flies, East of

Eden, and Dante’s Inferno if we’re

Feeling ambitious at the end of the

Year.

CUT TO:

INT- SCHOOL HALLWAY- END OF FIRST PERIOD

The bell for the end of first period ends, and everyone gets out of class. Blake says good bye to Ms. Redding, and she gives him a warm smile.

LUCILLE

Good bye, Blake. See you tomorrow.

Blake quickly turns around and grabs Madeline by the shoulder.

BLAKE

What’s the age of consent in the

State of New York.

MADELINE

It’s 17.

BLAKE

Shit.

MADELINE

Do you seriously think you could get

Away with dating a teacher?

BLAKE

If I wanted to, then yeah, sure I could.

MADELINE

Wow, Blake. Your mind works in very

Mysterious ways.

She’s just laughs, since the chances of him getting with a girl like Lucille are pretty slim.

CUT TO:

EXT- CHOIR ROOM- NINTH PERIOD

It’s ninth period. Everyone has a non academic class (i.e. Band, Gym, etc.). Lucille is walking past the choir room, where she looks in and sees the choir teacher, HECTOR STONE, 30-35, leading the choir in singing an old gospel song. Lucille stops by the room, and listens to them sing.

HECTOR

Altos get off of your lazy butts

And sing!

The choir laughs, and the altos pick up. They finish the song, and Mr. Stone tells them what was good and what was bad.

HECTOR

…And you, little missy.

He points to a student in the front row, SONYA SILVERMAN, 16-18, who’s giggling with her friends, one of them being Erin. She stands up and smiles.

SONYA

Yes, Mr. Stone.

He walks over to her and grabs her head.

HECTOR

Next time I catch you chatting with

Your little posse, I’m smacking you

All the way to Jupiter.

He pretends to smack her across the face.

HECTOR (cont’d)

Is that clear?

SONYA

Crystal clear, Mr. Stone.

She sits back down and she giggles with her friends. They go back to the beginning of their song, and Lucille walks away.

CUT TO:

INT- TEACHER’S LOUNGE- END OF SCHOOL

Lucille is making herself some coffee. She is stirring some sugar into her cup, when Hector comes in. He comes over and starts to make himself some coffee.

HECTOR

You must be the new English teacher.

I’m Hector Stone.

LUCILLE

Lucille Redding. It’s nice to meet you.

They shake hands, and go back to making their coffee.

HECTOR

So how do you like it here so far?

LUCILLE

It’s nice here. A little different

From assisting kindergarten, but it’s

Still great. And the kids are really

sweet.

HECTOR

Yeah, especially that Sonya. Do you

Have her?

LUCILLE

Sonya Silverman, yeah I do. She’s a

Really nice girl.

Hector just looks down at his coffee, and continues to stir. He checks his watch, and takes his coffee.

HECTOR

Well, it was great to meet you,

Lucille.

LUCILLE

You too. Have a good afternoon.

HECTOR

You too.

He walks out of the room. Lucille takes a sip of her coffee.

CUT TO:

INT- MADELINE’S BEDROOM- EVENING TIME

Madeline takes her copy of To Kill a Mockingbird out of her bag, and opens it to the first page. She reads the first page, and turns to the second page. She is getting genuinely interested in the book.

Erin walks by her room. She pops in and gives Madeline a surprised look.

ERIN

Oh my God, it’s Maddy, she’s reading!

Madeline looks up from reading her book.

MADELINE

Oh my God, it’s Lindsay Lohan!

You were so good in Mean Girls!

ERIN

Touché.

She comes in and sits down on her sister’s bed.

ERIN

So how was your first day?

MADELINE

Pretty good. It turns out Ms. Redding

Is going to be my English teacher for

The year.

ERIN

The woman from next door? What was

She like?

MADELINE

So far, she’s pretty cool. Blake

Practically fainted when he saw

Her. Even went to ask me the age

Of consent in New York.

ERIN

Only Blake would do that.

MADELINE

What about you? How did your classes

Go?

ERIN

Well, they were all right. I have

Choir again with Mr. Stone

MADELINE

I wish more teachers were like him.

He’s so cool.

ERIN

That’s highly unlikely. There’s

Absolutely no one else in the world

Like him.

She pauses for a minute.

ERIN

Except…

MADELINE

What?

ERIN

Well, I don’t get why he likes Sonya

So much. I mean, don’t get me wrong,

I’m not accusing him of anything, but…

MADELINE

You want some of the attention too?

ERIN

Well, kinda. I mean, I would never

Be a push over, but sometimes it’s

like, all his attention is focused

on her, and absolutely no one else

in the class.

MADELINE

Well, does she have a good voice?

ERIN

Yeah, it’s pretty good.

MADELINE

Then maybe he just thinks she’s his

Protégé or something like that.

ERIN

Yeah, maybe.

Ingrid comes in the front door, and drops her purse by the stairs.

INGRID

Madeline, Erin, I’m home.

MADELINE

Hi, mom.

ERIN

Hey, mom.

Madeline places her bookmark in her book, and goes downstairs to her mom. Erin gets up from the bed, and they walk downstairs to their mom, who’s getting things out of the fridge to make dinner.

INGRID

How was the first day of school?

MADELINE

Pretty good.

ERIN

All right. Our new neighbor is Maddy’s

English teacher, and Blake is in love

With her.

INGRID

Really? I didn’t know Lucille was

A teacher.

MADELINE

Me neither. Oh yeah, and Erin is

Getting jealous of Sonya.

ERIN

Shut up!

INGRID

Jealous? Why, is there a boy involved

In this?

ERIN

No, she just gets a lot of attention

From Mr. Gonzales. It’s no big deal.

Ingrid goes over to the stove and preheats the oven.

INGRID

It could be a first day thing. Just

Give it some time.

ERIN

I’ll try.

CUT TO:

INT- LUCILLE’S BEDROOM- NIGHT TIME

Lucille is in her bedroom reading a magazine. She hears a strange noise outside. She gets up and looks out the window.

She sees a man and a two woman in the street. One of the women is the man’s wife; the other is his mistress, who is half his age. The man tries to separate them, but it’s no use, and they are at each other’s throats in a matter of seconds.

Lucille closes the window, shuts off the lights, and goes to sleep.

CUT TO:

INT- LUCILLE’S CLASS ROOM- NEXT MORNING

Lucille is making a chart about the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird. She has a T chart of Scout, Atticus and Jem. A boy in the class raises his hand.

LUCILLE

Yes, Devon.

DEVON

So how come that kid didn’t get

Into trouble for calling his teacher

For calling his teacher a slut-whore

Of a teacher? Why didn’t they just

Send him to the principal or something?

LUCILLE

That’s a very good question. That boy,

Who is named Burris Ewell, wasn’t

Sent down because they didn’t want to

Bother with him. Can anyone tell me

Why that is?

Blake slowly raises his hand.

LUCILLE

Blake.

BLAKE

Because they figure that he’s only

There for one day. And they figure

That he’s so low class that he shouldn’t

Have to be dealt with.

LUCILLE

Exactly. Since he’s only there for

The first day, why should we take any

action. Excellent answer, Blake.

Blake is very pleased with himself. Madeline looks over and rolls her eyes. She goes back to listening to Ms. Redding explain how the great depression affected people like the Ewells. Blake leans in and whispers to Madeline.

BLAKE

Ha, my answer was excellent.

MADELINE

Don’t get too cocky.

CUT TO:

INT- SOCIAL STUDIES- SAME TIME

The class is watching a video on the Vietnam War. JUSTIN O’DONNELL, 35, is sitting by the TV with the remote in his hand. He shuts it off, and flicks the lights back on.

Sonya looks up from her notes on the video, and raises her hand.

JUSTIN

Yes, Sonya.

SONYA

How come so many people in America

didn’t like Vietnam? We were fighting

communism, isn’t that a good thing?

JUSTIN

It wasn’t just that. There were so

Many things happening in America in

The sixties, so much change. People

Were having promiscuous sex and drugs

And people were starting to fight for

For what they believed in. People started

To question authority, and most of all,

People started to question America.

STUDENT

What do you mean question America?

That doesn’t make any sense.

JUSTIN

Let me ask you all something. Who was

The bad guy, and who was the good guy?

The class is quiet. They’re trying to think of an answer, but they can’t. Justin smiles.

JUSTIN

Exactly. This was one of the first

Wars in American history where no

One knew who was waving the white

flag.

Justin is about to say something else, but the bell for lunch rings.

JUSTIN

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Everybody starts to get up and walk out of the room.

JUSTIN

And remember, those essays are due

On Wednesday.

Sonya is about to walk out of the door, but she stops.

SONYA

Bye, Mr. O’Donnell. I really liked

The lesson today.

JUSTIN

Thanks, Sonya. I appreciate it.

She smiles, and walks out the door. Justin gathers his things to go out to lunch. He looks down the hallway, and sees Lucille walk out the door, and drop her things. He walks over and helps her pick up her things.

LUCILLE

Thanks. I appreciate it.

JUSTIN

No problem. I remember my first

Year here.

LUCILLE

Does it get any better?

JUSTIN

Depends. Justin O’Donnell.

LUCILLE

Lucille Redding.

JUSTIN

But don’t worry. It really does get

Better after the first year.

LUCILLE

I don’t know. I just worried I don’t

Get through to them, you know? I’m

Always worried I’ll catch one of them

Falling asleep during a lesson about

Grammar.

DUSTIN

Well, if they fall asleep during that,

Then it’s probably not you.

Lucille laughs.

JUSTIN

Hey, me and some of the other faculty

Are going out to lunch. Would you like

To join us?

LUCILLE

Sure, I’d love to.

CUT TO:

INT- SCHOOL HALLWAY- A FEW MINUTES LATER

Lucille and Justin are talking as they pass by Mr. Stone’s room. Lucille looks in and sees lots of kids, mostly girls in the room talking and laughing with him. Two of the girls include Madeline and Sonya.

LUCILLE

Is it okay that they’re in there?

JUSTIN

Oh, yeah. It’s fine. There’s always

People who go to his room during lunch.

Lucille looks in and shakes the uneasy feeling off. They head off to lunch with the other teachers.

Madeline, Sonya and Mr. Stone are talking and laughing.

SONYA

So what’s up with Erin having red

Hair now?

MADELINE

I honestly don’t know. She says it’s

‘artistic expression using her body’

or something like that. But I think

she was just bored

HECTOR

When she walked into my class room,

I thought it was Lindsay Lohan coming

To promote her next movie.

MADELINE

Oh my God, I thought the exact same

Thing at home!

SONYA

But don’t worry, I think she looks

Really nice. Imagine if she got a

Tattoo.

MADELINE

My mom would send her to a convent

For the rest of her life.

A girl comes by with a Polaroid camera.

CAMERA GIRL

Smile guys.

Madeline, Sonya, and Hector all gather for a picture. The Camera Girl takes another picture, and they get into a silly pose again.

CUT TO:

EXT- DEMONASVILLE HIGH SCHOOL- AFTER SCHOOL

Madeline is walking home with Blake. They stop by a hot dog stand across the street and say hi to the owner.

BLAKE

Hey, Wayne.

MADELINE

Hi, Wayne.

WAYNE

Yo, kids. How ya doing?

BLAKE

Pretty good.

WAYNE

The usual.

MADELINE

I’m just going to get a bottle of water.

BLAKE

Nothing for me, man.

WAYNE

Water? Come on, a guy’s gotta make a living

Too!

Madeline gives Wayne the puppy face. He sighs and grabs the bottle of water.

WAYNE

You rich kids are going to need to make

A living someday. You won’t have mom and

Dad to give you any twenties!

Madeline hands them the money. They walk off and say good-bye to Wayne. Madeline looks at the Polaroid pictures of her, Mr. Stone, and Sonya.

BLAKE

When did take that?

MADELINE

Today at lunch. We were talking about

Erin’s hair.

BLAKE

Oh yeah, her ‘artistic expression’.

MADELINE

Exactly. Erin was right though, he has

Been paying a lot of attention to Sonya.

BLAKE

What do you mean? Like creepy stuff

That you would see on an after school

Special?

MADELINE

No of course not. Actually, I’m still

Trying to decide that.

There’s a moment of silence between them while they contemplate the unthinkable.

BLAKE

Don’t worry, Maddy. It’s couldn’t be

Anything like that.

MADELINE

Yeah, of course. It’s just Mr. Stone,

You know?

BLAKE

Yeah, of course.

CUT TO:

EXT- BLAKE’S HOUSE- LATER

Madeline and Blake stop outside of Blake’s house. Blake’s mother and father, ALICE REYNOLDS, 35-45, and JIM REYNOLDS, 40-50, step outside.

ALICE

Hello, Madeline. How are you doing?

MADELINE

Hi, Alice. I’m good thanks.

Jim’s beeper makes a loud beeping noise. He takes it off and looks at it.

JIM

I have to get back. I need to do

A heart transplant. Bye, honey.

ALICE

Bye, Jim.

He walks passed Madeline and Blake.

JIM

Hey, Madeline. It’s nice to see you.

MADELINE

Nice to see you, too.

JIM

I’ll see you later, son.

BLAKE

Bye, dad.

Jim walks over to his car across the street, and drives off.

MADELINE

Hey, I’ll call you later.

They give each other a hug. Madeline walks down the block, and Blake walks inside. Blake walks through the gate and into the house.

ALICE

So, Blake. How are things between

You and Madeline?

BLAKE

Fine.

ALICE

Is there anybody else you’re hanging

Out with these days?

BLAKE

Um, I hang out with Erin and Sonya

Sometimes. Oh, and Amy’s cool too,

She just talks a lot.

ALICE

And you don’t have any feelings for

Them?

BLAKE

No, not really.

ALICE

Why do you always hang out with girls

So much? Aren’t there any guys in the

School, or did I accidentally send you

To an all girl’s school.

BLAKE

Well, none of the guys in school are all

That great.

He grabs his things and walks up to his room. Alice follows him and stops at the bottom of the stairs.

ALICE

I’m just saying, maybe hanging out with

Guys instead of girls all the time would

Do you some good.

Blake sighs and goes into his room. Alice shakes her head, and looks at the cross on the living room wall.

CUT TO:

INT- BLAINE HOUSE- LATER

Madeline walks in the front door. Erin is fixing her hair. Ingrid is making dinner, and setting the table.

MADELINE

Hey, mom. What’s going on?

INGRID

We’re having Lucille over for dinner.

MADELINE

Lucille, as in Ms. Redding?

INGRID

Yeah, Ms. Redding. I hope that’s okay.

MADELINE

Yeah, it’s fine. I’ll go upstairs and

Get dressed.

She goes up to her room to get dressed. Ingrid takes the dinner out of the oven.

CUT TO:

EXT- BLAINE HOUSE- NIGHT TIME

Lucille is walking over to the Blaine’s house. She gets to the door, and rings the doorbell. She flattens her skirt down, and Ingrid opens the door.

INGRID

Lucille, it’s so nice to see you.

LUCILLE

It’s nice to see you too.

INGRID

Please, come in.

Lucille steps inside. She looks up and sees Madeline come down the stairs.

LUCILLE

Hi, Madeline.

MADELINE

Hi, Ms. Redding.

CUT TO:

INT- DINING ROOM- LATER

Everyone is sitting around the table finishing their dinner. Erin excuses herself, and goes to the living room.

INGRID

So, Lucille. Madeline tells me that

You’re getting along nicely at Demonsaville.

LUCILLE

It’s a nice school. Everyone there is

Great.

INGRID

Well, Madeline loves to write movie scripts.

LUCILLE

Really?

INGRID

Yes, and I’ve seen some them, by accident of

Course, and they’re great.

MADELINE

That’s because you have to like them. You’re

My mom.

LUCILLE

I think it’s really cool. How come you don’t

Show them to people.

MADELINE

I can show them to friends, but I’ll let everyone

In the family see it when it’s gets produced and

I make millions of dollars. Then I can buy my own

Island in Costa Rica, sip daiquiris-

Ingrid clears her throat and looks at Madeline.

MADELINE (cont’d)

Virgin daiquiris, and invite everyone in my

Family to stay.

LUCILLE

Just remember to invite me, please.

They laugh, and continue to eat.

MADELINE

And if you don’t mind me asking. I

Saw you and Mr. O’Donnell going out

To lunch today.

Lucille tries to think of something to say.

INGRID

Maddy, don’t pry.

LUCILLE

It’s all right. He just invited me

Out to lunch with him and some friends,

That’s all.

Madeline simply nods her head incredulously, and continues to eat. Erin comes back from the living room with a smile on her face, holding a photo album.

ERIN

Well look what just happened to be

Lying around the living room.

Madeline looks up, and tries to contain her laughter. Ingrid looks up, and tries not to turn red.

INGRID

What was that old thing doing in the

Living room?

ERIN

Well, I don’t know. I just saw it lying

On the couch.

LUCILLE

What is it?

ERIN

Come and take a look.

She beckons them to the living room. They all gather around the couch, and Erin opens the photo album revealing its content.

It’s a photo album of Ingrid back in her modeling days in the 80’s. We see ads for high end fashion labels like Versace, Dolce and Gabanna, etc. Lucille is astounded at the pictures.

LUCILLE

You were a model?!

INGRID

Well, I did a little bit of modeling

To pay for college.

Erin turns the page and reveals a picture of Ingrid walking down the runway.

ERIN

(Sarcastic)

Yeah, just a bit here and there.

She turns the page and reveals an ad for perfume that Ingrid did.

MADELINE

Mom, why are you so embarrassed by

it? It’s really cool.

INGRID

I’m not, it’s just… never mind.

Lucille is still marveling at all of the pictures.

LUCILLE

Wow, look at it. You still look like

You did in the pictures!

Ingrid smiles and looks down at her feet.

INGRID

Thanks, Lucille. That’s really sweet

Of you.

LUCILLE

No, I mean it. You could still walk

The runway if you wanted to.

INGRID

Well, those times have passed.

Ingrid quickly changes the subject.

INGRID

Would you like some coffee or tea?

LUCILLE

Oh, no thank you.

CUT TO:

INT- BLAINE HOUSE- LATER

Lucille is getting her coat on, and walking out the door.

LUCILLE

Dinner was excellent, Ingrid. Thank

You so much for inviting me.

INGRID

It was lovely having you over. Have

A good night.

LUCILLE

You too.

Lucille walks over to her house, and Ingrid closes the front door. She turns around, and looks at the photo album that’s still lying on the table.

She picks it up, and looks around to see if Erin and Madeline are around. She slowly opens the book and re-visits her glory days.

Madeline walks by the living room, and Ingrid quickly shoves the book under the couch.

MADELINE

Good night, mom.

INGRID

Good night, Maddy.

She makes sure that Madeline is upstairs. She bends down and gets the book back from under the sofa.

CUT TO:

INT- SCHOOL- A WEEK LATER

Signs and posters for homecoming are posted on the school walls. The school year is now in full swing. Lucille parks her car, and gets her things out.

She walks down to the steps. She stops five seconds before a skater kid whizzes by, and continues to walk.

She walks through the hallways with a bit of confidence. A student says hi to her.

CUT TO:

INT- ENGLISH CLASSROOM- LUNCH TIME

Lucille is eating her lunch and grading some papers.

Madeline quietly knocks on the door. Lucille looks up from grading her papers.

MADELINE

Is it okay if I come in?

LUCILLE

Madeline, of course. Come in.

Madeline slowly walks in. She holds out her homework from the night before. It is crossed out in pen, wit ha few blank spaces with question marks.

LUCILLE

Last night’s assignment.

MADELINE

Yeah, I didn’t understand it too well.

LUCILLE

What didn’t you understand?

MADELINE

Well, I don’t know what a doppleganger

Is.

LUCILLE

Okay, you know what a mirror image is,

Right?

Madeline shakes her head.

LUCILLE (cont’d)

Well, a mirror image is the same thing

As a doppelganger. It’s a term for two

Characters who are representing two different

Sides of something. Take for instance,

Atticus and Bob Ewell. What are they

Representing?

MADELINE

Good and evil, obviously.

LUCILLE

Right. And what do you think Scout and

Aunt Alexandra represent?

Madeline thinks about it for a moment.

MADELINE

Something that has to do with growing

Up?

LUCILLE

Exactly. So that should help you answer

the second question.

Madeline looks down at her paper.

MADELINE

Why did she put them in?

LUCILLE

No, why do you think she put them in.

I’m not looking for the right answer,

Madeline, I’m just looking for what

You think, as long as you can back it

Up with evidence from the book.

Madeline looks at her teacher surprised. She’s never heard a teacher say this before.

MADELINE

Well, I think she put them in because

She wants to show the characters what

They possibly could, or could’ve become.

LUCILLE

Why do you think that?

MADELINE

Well, in, um… Oh, in Chapter 10, when

Alexandra comes to Maycomb to live with

Them, Scout really sees that she has no

Choice?

LUCILLE

And how come there’s a question mark

At the end of that?

MADELINE

Uhh, I don’t know! I’m sorry, but I can’t

Get this!! I’m not smart like you!

Madeline puts her head into her hands. Lucille smiles and puts her hand on Madeline’s shoulder.

LUCILLE

Do you want to know a secret?

MADELINE

Sure.

Lucille leans in a little closer.

LUCILLE

I hate this book.

MADELINE

What?

LUCILLE

I hate this book with a burning passion.

I simply can’t stand it.

MADELINE

Are you serious?!

Lucille nods her head.

MADELINE

Oh my God! I don’t read at all, and I

Mean never, but I can’t put this book

Down. And you’re an English teacher!

LUCILLE

I know! It’s awful.

They both laugh at the irony of the situation.

LUCILLE

Just don’t tell anyone, promise?

MADELINE

Yeah, I promise.

They go back to fixing Madeline’s homework.

CUT TO:

INT- CAFETERIA- SAME TIME

Erin, Sonya, and a few other friends are sitting at a table talking to each other.

ERIN

So did you hear what happened at Renee

Hollister’s party this weekend?

SONYA

No.

ERIN

Okay, so it was Renee, Lacey, Matthew

Bolton, Connor and Sarah Endicott.

Sarah ended up giving Matthew a head

Job, right? Well, Renee ended up getting

Grounded for a week because, you are

Going to love this, Matthew ended up

Leaving a used condom on the rug!

Everyone starts hysterically laughing. Sonya just smiles and pretends to laugh.

SONYA

That has to suck. I mean, it wasn’t

Even her fault, you know? She didn’t

Leave the condom on the floor.

SARAH

Yeah, but she did throw the party.

SONYA

True. Hey, Sarah, what’s the Bio homework.

SARAH

It’s the vocab on pages 234 and 235.

They continue to eat their lunch and talk to each other. Sonya just looks down at her lunch and pushes it around the plate.

CUT TO:

INT- LUCILLE’S CLASSROOM- SAME TIME

Lucille and Madeline are still working on her homework when Justin walks in. He sees them working on something together.

JUSTIN

Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t know-

Madeline smiles and grabs her homework. She runs out of the room.

MADELINE

No problem. I have to go anyway. Thanks

For the homework help, Ms. Redding.

LUCILLE

Your welcome.

Madeline shuts the door behind her.

JUSTIN

I didn’t mean to interrupt.

LUCILLE

It’s all right. We were pretty much

Done anyway.

JUSTIN

I was just wondering if you got the

Memo about the meeting today after

School.

LUCILLE

Oh, I forgot to check my e-mail. Thanks for reminding me.

Madeline is looking in and spying on them. She quickly walks away so they won’t hear her laugh.

CUT TO:

INT- HALLWAY- AFTER SCHOOL

The bell for the end of school has just rung. The last few people in the building are leaving. Sonya is wearing her soccer uniform. She walks over Mr. Stone’s room and opens the door.

Mr. Stone is sitting at his computer. He looks over and sees Sonya walk into the room.

SONYA

Hey, Mr. Stone. I’m just getting my

Stuff.

MR. STONE

Oh, it’s no problem, Sonya.

Sonya goes over to the window sill and grabs her stuff.

MR. STONE

I see you got the new soccer uniforms.

SONYA

Yeah, we just got them on Thursday.

MR. STONE

It fits you rather nicely.

Sonya pauses for a moment. What did he just say?

SONYA

Oh, uh, thanks.

She gets up and starts to walk towards the door. Mr. Stone turns off his computer and follows her out. Sonya looks behind her, and quickly looks away. Mr. Stone quickly is by her side.

MR. STONE

How long have you been playing soccer?

SONYA

Since fifth grade.

MR. STONE

Wow, you’re definitely the most gorgeous

Soccer player I’ve ever seen.

SONYA

Oh, thanks.

MR. STONE

Have you ever considered being a model?

SONYA

Well, not really. But I guess it could

Be fun.

MR. STONE

You would be perfect. You have the face,

The nice hips and the long skinny legs…

He corners Sonya. She quickly drops her bag.

SONYA

Oops.

She quickly bends down, and runs for the door.

SONYA

Bye, Mr. Stone.

She quickly runs out the door. She leans against the wall, her head spinning. She runs over to the soccer filed. The coach looks over and sees her running over.

COACH

Silverman, you’re five minutes late.

SONYA

I’m sorry, coach. It won’t happen again,

I promise.

COACH

Fine. But one more time, and there’s

Going to be consequences. Understood?

SONYA

Yes, of course.

COACH

Good. Now go warm up.

Sonya drops her bag and starts to run a lap around the field.

CUT TO:

INT- ERIN’S ROOM- NIGHT TIME

Erin is sitting on her bed doing her math homework. There is wannabe emo music blasting. And she can’t figure out why she can’t do her math homework.

She picks up her phone and calls Sonya for help.

CUT TO:

INT- SONYA’S LIVING ROOM

Sonya is in her living room. She is in her pajamas watching a cheesy after school special. She gets her cell phone out of her bag and answers it.

SONYA

Hello?

ERIN

Guess who?

SONYA

Hey, Erin.

Erin is a little surprised at the bluntness in Sonya’s voice.

ERIN

I was wondering if you could help me

With the math homework.

SONYA

Why should I do that?

ERIN

Because you’re amazing at math. And you

Love me.

SONYA

Of course I do. What do you need help

On?

ERIN

Okay, I can’t figure out problem nineteen.

The one about the proportions.

Sonya hears the emo music blasting in the background.

SONYA

Wait, what the hell is that?

ERIN

What, the music? It’s this awesome

New band called toxic lollipop.

You like?

SONYA

Like? They sound like whining three

Year olds.

ERIN

I happen to like this music, thank you

Very much.

SONYA

Sure you do.

ERIN

What’s that suppose to mean?

SONYA

Nothing. Well, you remember to cross

Multiply and round to the nearest tenth,

Right?

ERIN

Yeah, I cross multiplied, rounded to…

Oh, the nearest hundredths.

SONYA

Yeah.

ERIN

My bad.

SONYA

Just try turning down the toxic lady pops-

ERIN

Lollipops.

SONYA

Lollipops, and it’ll help you concentrate

Better. Doctors orders.

ERIN

Hey, are you feeling all right?

Sonya looks at the screen. The girl is crying to her mother about being addicted to drugs.

SONYA

Yeah, I’m fine. Why?

ERIN

Well, I saw you today running your

Ass off to soccer practice. You seemed

A little freaked out. Like someone was

Chasing you.

SONYA

I’m fine. I was just worried about being

Late to soccer. You know how the Coach

Is.

ERIN

She can be pretty tough. Are you going to

The Halloween dance tomorrow?

SONYA

I don’t know. I’m still deciding.

ERIN

Well, everyone is going to be there. So

Why not?

SONYA

I have to go. I’ll talk to you later.

ERIN

See ya.

They hang up the phone. Erin goes back to her homework. She stops for a minute, and reaches over to her stereo to turn the music down.

CUT TO:

INT- LIVING ROOM- SAME TIME

Madeline is sitting in the living room watching an episode of The Real World, when her mom comes in. Her mom looks at what is on the T.V., and is shocked.

INGRID

What the hell are you watching?!

MADELINE

The Real World. It’s in London this time.

Tracey just hooked up with Lenny and now

Rochelle is getting-

Ingrid picks up the remote, and turns the T.V. off. Madeline snaps her head around.

MADELINE

What did you do that for?

INGRID

I did it for your own good.

MADELINE

My own good? You just shut the T.V. off

Without asking.

INGRID

I did it so you wouldn’t go walking

Around thinking having promiscuous sex

And getting drunk to the point of you

Getting arrested, is not only acceptable,

But entertaining.

MADELINE

Mom, it’s just a T.V. show.

INGRID

No, it’s not just a T.V. show. It’s you

Getting sucked into a reality that’s

About as real as aliens and mermaids.

MADELINE

I know it’s fake mom. I’m not stupid.

INGRID

I didn’t say you were stupid. I was saying

That I don’t want that trash in my house.

MADELINE

Calm down, mom. You are over-reacting,

And you’re being ridiculous.

INGRID

Don’t you dare tell me that I am being

Ridiculous, when you’re the one watching

A bunch of young twenty something people

Humiliate themselves on television!

MADELINE

Well, if you don’t like it, then don’t

Watch it!

INGRID

This isn’t about me; it’s about you having

A false sense of reality.

MADELINE

Stop accusing me of having a ‘false sense

Of reality’. You need to calm down.

INGRID

Fine, I’ll stop if you start treating me

With respect.

MADELINE

Why should I respect you when you’re not

Treating me with respect?! Don’t expect

Something that you don’t give to other

People.

INGRID

I respect you more than half of the people

In this town! Do you know why?

Madeline looks at her mom coldly, and shakes her head.

INGRID

Because you’re a smart selfless person. And

You care about other people, and you don’t

Let people take advantage of you. That’s why.

MADELINE

Well, you know what…

Maddy tries to think of something to say. She can’t let her mom win.

MADELINE

I hate you!!

INGRID

No you don’t.

MADELINE

Yes I do!! I hate you! I hate you so fucking

much!!

INGRID

A, watch your language. And B, stop saying

Things you don’t mean, Maddy.

MADELINE

Then stop trying to act like everything

Is okay when you’re still pissed off

About dad!!

INGRID

You know very well I don’t hold a grudge

Against your father. And you know you

Can’t make me hate you. Not even if you

Tried your hardest.

MADELINE

Really? And why is that?

INGRID

Because I’m your mother. You know that no

Matter what you do, I will always love you

And be there for you until the day I die.

Madeline tries to hide her tears by looking down.

MADELINE

Liar.

Ingrid is shocked by that.

INGRID

Take that back.

MADELINE

No.

INGRID

I said, take that back.

MADELINE

Make me!

INGRID

YOU TAKE THAT BACK RIGHT NOW!!! AND

DON’T YOU EVER CALL ME A LIAR, AND

YOU NEVER DISRESPECT ME LIKE THAT

EVER AGAIN! IS THAT CLEAR?! ANSWER

ME!

Madeline steps back. She’s never seen her mom like this.

INGRID (cont’d)

I never want to see you like this ever

Again.

Madeline tries to think of something to say, but she can’t find the words to say. A tear rolls down her cheek, and she quickly wipes it away. Ingrid realizes what she did.

INGRID

I’m sorry, sweetie. I didn’t mean to

Scare you.

MADELINE

I’m fine.

INGRID

Madeline-

MADELINE

Stop. I said I’m fine.

Ingrid grabs a tissue, and tries to walk towards Madeline, but she runs upstairs and slams the door to her room. Ingrid sighs and sits down on the couch.

Maddy slams the door and sits down on her bed. Tears of anger slowly stream down her face. She takes out her cell phone and goes to her phone book.

CUT TO:

INT- BLAKE’S KITCHEN- SAME TIME

The phone is his kitchen rings. Blake walks in and picks up the phone.

BLAKE

Hello?

MADELINE

It’s me. Can I just talk to you for a minute?

BLAKE

Of course, sweetie. What’s wrong?

MADELINE

My mom, she doesn’t love me. She hates me.

A few laughs slip out of Blake’s mouth.

MADELINE

What the fuck are you laughing for?!

BLAKE

I’m sorry. It’s just… do you honestly think

Your mom doesn’t love you?

MADELINE

Kind of. You love me, right?

BLAKE

Of course I love you, Maddy.

A few more tears slip down her cheeks.

BLAKE (cont’d)

Okay, tell me what was said and done.

Spill it.

MADELINE

Well, she said a lot of stuff about me getting

A false sense of reality from watching The

Real World, and then I said some things about

How she doesn’t like her life. And then…

BLAKE

What.

MADELINE

She said she’d always love me, and I called

Her a liar.

BLAKE

She didn’t happen to say anything about watching

What you say, did she?

MADELINE

How did you know?

BLAKE

I’m psychic.

MADELINE

I screwed up. I’m a total screw up.

BLAKE

No you aren’t. You just need to remember that

You’ve got so many people who love you to

Death, and you’re such a sweet and caring

Person. You’ve got some flaws, so does everyone

Else in the world. Do you think Paris Hilton

Always looks incredible?

MADELINE

No.

BLAKE

Exactly. She’s got her minions working on her.

Just take a little time to get all of the tears out of your system, cool down, and just take time to think. Doctor’s orders.

MADELINE

Thanks, B. I’ll see you tomorrow.

BLAKE

Are we still going to the dance with Amy?

MADELINE

Of course we are. Did you get the script

I sent you?

BLAKE

Yeah. The characters are pretty good, you

Just need to make a little more of a plot.

And it seems kind of rushed.

MADELINE

What about the scene where they sail to India?

BLAKE

That was awesome. I have to go, but I’ll

Talk to you later.

MADELINE

Bye, Blake.

They hang up the phone. She tales a few moments to get the rest of her tears out.

CUT TO:

INT- LIVING ROOM- LATER

Ingrid is watching a video of her, Madeline and Erin when they were still toddlers. They’re at the beach playing in the water. Ingrid’s former husband is filming. We can hear him saying things on the T.V. He does a close up on Madeline.

DAD (O.S.)

Now who’s that beautiful woman you were

In the water with?

MADELINE

That’s my mommy!

DAD (O.S.)

Really? Wow, you must be lucky!

MADELINE

Yeah! I love my mommy very much.

DAD (O.S.)

How much?

Madeline jumps up and spreads her arms apart.

MADELINE

This much!!

Ingrid comes into the hot and picks her up. She gives her a big kiss on the cheek.

Ingrid sits and watches the tape.

ERIN

Wow, hair in the nineties really did suck.

Ingrid turns around and sees Erin standing behind her.

INGRID

Yeah, and mine was the worst of all.

Erin comes and sits by her mom.

ERIN

So what was the fight about?

INGRID

Honestly, it was just about seeing Maddy

Get entertained by two girls cat fighting

Each other when they’re drunk. Who the hell

Wants to watch that kind of thing?

ERIN

Uh, who wouldn’t want to watch that kind

Of thing?

Ingrid looks at Erin incredulously.

ERIN

Sorry, but it’s a little true.

INGRID

I know. I just don’t want to see my

Little girl grow up bad. I feel like

I have to prove to everyone that I’m

A good mom.

ERIN

Are you proving that to everyone else,

Or just you? You’re a good mom, hell,

Even a great mom. You need to calm down

A little bit, and Maddy just needs to

Realize that she may be growing up, but

She’s still a kid.

INGRID

Wow, my daughter is giving me parenting

Advise. Am I in some strange alternate

Universe?

ERIN

Possibly.

Ingrid smiles. She puts her head in her hands and rubs her eyes.

ERIN

I’ll be up in my room. Good night.

INGRID

Good night, sweetie.

They give each other a kiss, and Erin walks upstairs. Ingrid stays sitting, watching the home video. We can see the glow of the T.V. on her face.

FADE TO BLACK

CUT TO:

INT- KITCHEN- NEXT MORNING

Madeline, Erin and Ingrid are getting ready for the day. Madeline is putting her stuff in her bag. Ingrid grabs her palm pilot and puts it in her bag. Erin hugs her mom and runs out the door.

INGRID

Maddy?

He looks up at her mom.

INGRID (cont’d)

Do you want me to drive you to school?

It looks like it might rain.

MADELINE

No, it’s okay. I’ll just walk with Blake

Like usual.

INGRID

All right.

Madeline starts to go out the door.

INGRID

Have a good day at school, honey.

MADELINE

Thanks.

She gives her mom a hug. She speaks softly.

MADELINE

I love you.

INGRID

I love you, too.

She kisses her mom on the cheek, and walks out the door.

CUT TO:

EXT- DEMONASVILLE HIGH SCHOOL- NEXT MORNING

Sonya’s dad is driving her to school. They’re in a brand spanking new BMW. She sits in the car for a moment while she gets all of her things together, and gets out of the car.

SONYA’S DAD

Hey, mom is coming to pick you up

After school today.

Sonya looks over and sees Mr. Stone looking over at her. Time freezes for a moment.

SONYA’S DAD

Are you okay, Sonya?

SONYA

What? Oh, yeah, I’m fine. I’ll see

You tonight, dad.

SONYA’S DAD

Bye, honey. Have a good day at school.

He drives away, leaving a secretly scared Sonya standing in front of the school. Erin comes walking over to her.

ERIN

Hey! Big dance tonight.

Sonya immediately turns around and changes her attitude.

SONYA

Yeah! I can hardly wait. Have you

Picked out your costume yet?

ERIN

I was thinking of going as Edie Sedgwick. I

Think my mom has some sixties go-go stuff

Locked up somewhere from last year. What

About you?

SONYA

I don’t know. Maybe a hula girl.

ERIN

There’s probably a million people who are

Going to go as some Hawaiian thing.

SONYA

You’re probably right. Maybe I should go as

A nun!

ERIN

A nun? Where the hell did that come from?

SONYA

It was just an idea. I’ll definitely think

Of something cool for tonight, trust me.

They walk into school together. Where Lucille is opening the door to her classroom. She opens the door, and looks down the hall. She see Sonya with a strange, almost nervous look on her face. Sonya walks by with a bright smile.

SONYA

Good morning, Ms. Redding.

LUCILLE

Good morning, Sonya.

SFX: The bell for first bell rings

CUT TO:

INT- SOCIAL STUDIES- LATER IN THE DAY

Justin is giving a lesson on the after effects of Vietnam, and Kennedy’s murder.

JUSTIN

…And after only a thousand days in office.

Lee Harvey Oswald shot John F. Kennedy

While driving through the grassy knoll with

His wife, Jackie.

A kid in the back of the room has headphones on, while secretly listening to his mp3 player. He’s unaware of people watching him while he sings the song.

MP3 KID

Chika chika, wow, wow.

JUSTIN

Bobby, please, no cheap porno soundtrack

While we’re discussing major political

Assassinations.

MP3 KID

How would you know what a cheap porno

Soundtrack sounds like?

JUSTIN

It was the eighties, I was young and

Bored.

The class cracks up as Justin holds out his hand for the mp3.

MP3 KID

Could I listen to something like, sixties

Protest songs or something like that.

JUSTIN

I think that’s a very good idea. Instead

Of doing the homework from The Changing

Times, I want you all to go home and

Listen to any protest songs from that era.

Then I want you to write at least two paragraphs

About your thoughts and feelings when listening

To it.

Everyone is relieved that there is no homework from the textbook.

CUT TO:

INT- LUCILLE’S CLASSROM- LUNCH TIME

Lucille is eating her lunch while she’s on the computer. Madeline and Blake come in. Madeline nervously knocks on the door.

LUCILLE

Hey, guys. Come on in.

MADELINE

Thanks.

They come in and sit down on two chairs in the room.

LUCILLE

So what’s up?

Madeline looks down at the floor. Blake nudges her.

BLAKE

It’s okay. You can tell her.

MADELINE

I, uh, I

LUCILLE

Yes?

MADELINE

I kinda, sort of, lost my copy of To Kill

A Mockingbird. I’m so sorry! I feel awful!

I promise I’ll pay for another copy.

LUCILLE

Madeline-

MADELINE

I don’t know where I put, but I promise I’ll

Do all the homework-

LUCILLE

Madeline, it’s okay. You will have to pay

For another copy, but it’s good that you

Told me.

MADELINE

It is? You’re not mad?

LUCILLE

Well, I’m a little bit upset, but I’m not

mad at you. I’m not going to kill you over

something like that.

BLAKE

Damn, I was hoping to see some hardcore

Bloodshed.

LUCILLE

Sorry, Blake. I’m not exactly the bloodthirsty

Murderous type. Try going to Mr. Branch for

That kind of stuff.

They can’t help but crack up about that. They strangely find themselves having a genuinely good time with each other.

MADELINE

So are you chaperoning the dance tonight?

LUCILLE

I am, but I don’t what I should go as. Or is

That a really dorky thing for a teacher to do.

MADELINE

Oh, everybody dresses up to the Halloween dance.

BLAKE

Yeah, you should see Mr. O’Donnell’s costume.

He’ll be standing in a garbage can, but have

Fake legs hanging over the top and a dummy in the back so it looks like he’s being carried round, It’s what he did last year, and it was so cool.

MADELINE

He told us that he went to a bunch of costume

Contests and won like, $400 and a Miller Light

Cooler.

As they continue to talk with each other, Lucille finds herself being able to connect with them.

The principal, DR. COHEN, 41, comes over the intercom. His voice has a hint of weakness in it.

DR. COHEN

Good afternoon, everyone. I just want to

Remind everyone that the Halloween dance

Is tonight starting at eight. Remember

To be fun and creative with your costumes,

But be tasteful too. Have a good day,

Fellow Demoasvillers.

The intercom clicks off.

LUCILLE

Does he usually talk like that?

MADELINE

Kind of. He usually has Mr. Stripe doing

All of the dirty work.

BLAKE

Just like last year, when Isabel Barrios

Lit the trash on fire, and Dr. Cohen just

Stood there while Mr. Stripe screamed at

Her for like, half an hour straight.

Lucille seems surprised.

MADELINE

I know. When I first came here, I thought

Mr. Stripe was the principal.

The three of them continue to talk.

CUT TO:

INT- BLAINE HOUSE- NIGHT TIME

Ingrid is helping Erin with her Edie Sedgwick costume. She looks just like a sixties mod go-go dancer. Ingrid adjusts the hat on her head, and smiles.

ERIN

Does it look cool?

INGRID

If you looked any cooler you would freeze

Us all!

Ingrid chuckles at her own joke. Erin looks at her mom.

INGRID

I know, I’m hilarious.

ERIN

Well, you’re getting there.

Ingrid turns her head and calls out to Madeline.

INGRID

Maddy, can we see your costume?

Maddy comes out in her eighties rock star outfit. She’s decked out in fingerless lace gloves and boots.

INGRID

Oh my God, you look so cool!

MADELINE

Thanks. So do you, mod girl.

ERIN

I happen to be dressed as Edie Sedgwick, thank

You very much.

MADELINE

Who?

ERIN

Edie Sedgwick. She was Andy Warhol’s protégé

For his artwork. She’s only one of the most

Famous figures in modern art.

MADELINE

Sorry.

The doorbell rings, and Madeline runs down to get it. She opens the door, and sees Blake dressed as a trucker, fake mullet and all.

MADELINE

Nice costume.

BLAKE

Same with you, Ms. Rock Star.

He comes in, and Ingrid comes to the top of the stairs.

INGRID

Hi, Blake. Great costume!

BLAKE

Thanks, Ingrid. Is Erin going?

MADELINE

Yeah, as Ms. ‘I am so artsy and cool cause

I know who Edie Sedgwick is’ girl.

BLAKE

Can’t wait to see what that looks like.

The doorbell rings, and Erin comes running down the stairs, almost falling down the stairs while tripping on her boots. She gets to the door, and sees Sonya. She’s dressed as Pocahontas.

ERIN

Native American Girl?

SONYA

Pocahontas.

ERIN

Sweet.

Sonya walks in as Ingrid comes downstairs with the camera. She sees Blake, and smiles.

SONYA

Blake! I haven’t seen you in forever!

BLAKE

Me neither.

Erin calls up to her mom.

ERIN

Mom, are you coming?

INGRID

Hold on, I want to get a picture.

ERIN AND MADELINE

Mom!

INGRID

Just one, I promise. Smile guys!

They get together, and smile. Ingrid tries to take the picture with the digital camera, but she doesn’t know how.

INGRID

Okay, hold on. No, not video. Okay, just

One second.

She continues to mess around with the camera until finally Erin comes over and shows her what to do.

INGRID

Oh, thanks. Okay guys now smile!

They all smile, and Ingrid takes the picture. Ingrid looks at the picture.

INGRID

Could we do just one more?

MADELINE

Mom!!

INGRID

Okay, out to the car, you guys.

They all head out to the car, and drive off.

While in the car, everyone is talking to each other and laughing.

SONYA

But seriously, Blake. You could be a total

Player.

BLAKE

I could?

ERIN

Of course!

MADELINE

I second that.

BLAKE

Uh, thanks, I think.

SONYA

Hey, how about that girl Zurie. She’s

Really cute.

MADELINE

Yeah, you two would make a really cute

Couple.

BLAKE

Well, she’s nice, but I’m just not that into

Her, you know?

MADELINE

Oh yeah, I forgot. You have a thing for older

Woman.

ERIN

Ooo, what older woman?

MADELINE

Well, she just moved here, and her last name

Starts with an R.

BLAKE

Shut up!

SONYA

Oh my God, Ms. Redding!!

BLAKE

Maybe.

SONYA

Whoa. Well, it’s

INGRID

I think it’s fine that he’s not going out

With anyone. Blake, don’t listen to them,

You don’t need to date at such a young age.

BLAKE

(Sarcastically)

Thanks, Ingrid. It’s nice to know that

Someone isn’t hounding me down.

He looks at Madeline when he says “someone”. Madeline smiles innocently.

MADELINE

You know how much I love you, right?

BLAKE

Of course I do.

They pull up to the school, and they all get out of the car.

INGRID

Call me when you need to get picked up.

ERIN

Bye, Mom.

MADELINE

Thanks Mom, Love you.

BLAKE

Bye Ingrid. Thanks.

Sonya waves to Ingrid. She waves back, and drives slowly out of the parking lot, and honks to Lucille, who is pulling into the school. Lucille waves back as she parks her car.

She picks up her pirate hat, and places it on her head. She takes a deep breath, and heads into the high school.

She walks down the strangely deserted hallways of the school, and looks for the gymnasium. She looks down the hall, and sees the large doors.

She opens them, and music immediately is blasting in her ears. She stumbles back, and then gets back to her feet.

Almost everyone at the dance is dancing, while the teachers border the space around. Lucille looks around, and finds a spot to stand.

JUSTIN

Hey, you made it!

She turns around and sees Justin in a full out Mel Gibson from Braveheart costume. Lucille gasps in shock from hardly recognizing him.

LUCILLE

Wow, uh, cool costume!

JUSTIN

Thanks. Yours is great, too.

LUCILLE

Thanks.

She looks over and sees three kids in a grind line.

LUCILLE

Are they supposed to be doing that?

JUSTIN

Technically no. But when Dr. Cohen isn’t

Around to lecture them about the demoralization

Of today’s generation, then yes.

LUCILLE

I just remember the school dances that use

To have eighty something teachers with

Rulers in their hands. I remember that

Awful smell

JUSTIN

Ah, good times.

The camera goes to Erin and Sonya, who are dancing with other friends. Sonya looks over, and sees Mr. Stone looking straight at her.

ERIN

Are you okay?

SONYA

Huh?

ERIN

Are you all right?

SONYA

Oh, yeah, I’m fine. I’m just a little

Hot, I think I’m going to go outside and

Get some air.

ERIN

All right.

Sonya works her way through the crowd. She walks outside and takes a few deep breaths. Shortly after, Hector comes walking outside.

HECTOR

Sonya, are you feeling okay?

Sonya turns around in shock.

SONYA

What are you doing out here?

HECTOR

I saw you rush outside. I wanted to see

If you were okay.

SONYA

I’m fine, thanks.

He walks over to where she’s standing. Her heart rate starts to heighten.

HECTOR

It’s a beautiful night, isn’t it?

SONYA

Yeah, it’s pretty nice.

They look up at the night sky. Hector slowly looks at Sonya, trying to resist.

HECTOR

That’s a very nice costume. Did you

Make it yourself?

SONYA

Oh, I, uh, went to Party Town and got it

There.

She looks away from him.

HECTOR

You know, that skirt is quite short on you.

SONYA

It is? I think it’s okay.

HECTOR

Well, it’s short enough. It could give boys

The wrong impression.

SONYA

The wrong impression?

HECTOR

You know what I mean.

SONYA

Um, okay.

She tries to walk back, when he turns around with her. She quickens her pace. His hand grazes her hips, and she dashes back to the dance.

Erin turns around and sees Sonya, who looks like she’s just seen a ghost.

ERIN

What happened?

SONYA

Nothing, I’m just out of breath.

ERIN

From what?

SONYA

Nothing! I’m fine!

ERIN

Sorry.

They continue to dance like nothing has happened. Dr. Cohen comes strutting into the room in his ridiculous costume. People turn around and groan.

He grabs the microphone from the DJ, and turns the music down.

DR.COHEN

Everyone, can I have your attention please?

Only a few people quiet down.

DR. COHEN

Mr. Stripe, if you please.

MR. STRIPE, 45, comes barreling to the front.

MR. STRIPE

Hey! QUIET DOWN!!!

Everyone quiets down. Dr. Cohen smiles.

DR. COHEN

Thank you. Now, I wanted to talk to you

Guys about your year here at Demonasville

High School.

People start to groan and boo. Mr. Stripe grabs one kid by the arm

MR. STRIPE

You’re coming with me, punk!

He drags them out of the door.

Lucille is taken back as the doors slam behind him. Justin leans in and whispers to her.

JUSTIN

The same routine happens every year, don’t

Worry.

Dr. Cohen continues to give his speech as everyone gets bored.

FADE IN TO:

EXT- PARKING LOT- NIGHT TIME

The dance is over. Everyone is getting picked up. Lucille is walking over to her car, when Dr. Cohen stops her.

LUCILLE

Dr. Cohen, hi.

DR.COHEN

Hello there, Lucille. Did you enjoy your

First school dance?

LUCILLE

Yeah, it was a lot of fun.

DR. COHEN

That’s great. And you made sure people

Were dancing tastefully, right?

LUCILLE

Yeah, of course.

DR. COHEN

Wonderful. I must say, that is one tubular

Costume.

Lucille struggles not to shudder from the word ‘tubular’.

LUCILLE

Thanks. Your costume is great too.

DR. COHEN

Thanks. Well, you have an awesome night.

Drive safe.

LUCILLE

I will. Good night, Mr.-

Dr. Cohen turns around and looks at her.

LUCILLE

Dr. Cohen. I’m sorry.

He smiles, and walks back to his car. Lucille takes off her eye patch, and starts her car.

Sonya sees the family SUV pull up. A tiny woman, SONYA’S MOM, 38, steps out of the car in her 20 something clothes and high heels.

SONYA’S MOM

Sonya, honey!

Sonya looks over at her mom. She’s looking borderline hooker.

SONYA

Hi, mom.

SONYA’S MOM

Did you and your friend’s have a good

Time?

She waves to everyone. They awkwardly waves back.

SONYA

Yeah, it was fun.

SONYA’S MOM

Do you kids need a ride?

Ingrid pulls into the parking lot. Sonya looks over in relief.

SONYA

Nope. See you at home.

They run off over to Ingrid, and get into the car. She sneers at her while Ingrid drives off. Ingrid looks away, and drives off.

INGRID

Did you all have fun?

They all say yes.

ERIN

Hey mom, can I stay over at Sonya’s

Tonight?

INGRID

Fine by me. Should I drop you guys off?

ERIN

Yes please.

They drive to Sonya’s house. It’s on a street filled with houses only the rich and powerful could afford. Madeline answers her cell phone.

Erin and Sonya hop out of the car. Erin gives her mom a hug.

ERIN

Bye, mom. Love you.

SONYA

Bye Ingrid. Thanks for the ride.

INGRID

No problem.

(To Erin)

See you in the morning, honey.

They walk into her house. Madeline hangs up the phone.

MADELINE

Hey mom, can you drop us off on Main Street?

We’re going to go hang out with Amy.

INGRID

Sure.

They drive to Main Street. Madeline and Blake look over and see Amy coming out of CVS and waving to them. Madeline gives her mom a kiss, and they hop out of he car.

INGRID

Are you sure you guys don’t want to get

Out of your costumes? I could give you guys

A ride.

MADELINE

It’s okay. I’m fine.

BLAKE

Yeah, same here. See you later, Ingrid.

They walk off and meet Amy across the street. Ingrid can’t help but realize that her kids aren’t kids anymore. She drives back home.

Madeline, Blake and Amy walk down the avenue towards Starbucks.

AMY

…I thought I was going to suffocate in there.

It was like being in a sauna crowded with

A bunch of fat guys.

Madeline and Blake laugh hysterically at that. They walk in and get in line. They see a few kids from the dance with their costumes still on.

MADELINE

Did you see Dr. Cohen with his costume?

BLAKE

You mean the same costume he wears every

Year? Of course, who couldn’t notice that

Hideous thing.

AMY

I saw him walk over to Lane ad Sam grinding

With each other, and he was like “Come on,

Guys. Let’s keep it PG”

MADELINE

PG? We’re in high school. We’re at least

PG-13.

BLAKE

Whatever. At least he wasn’t oozing Ralph

Lauren like he usually does.

AMY

Ugh, don’t remind me.

Two guys at the other table are talking to each other while chugging frappuchinos.

GUY 1

Dude, did you see how hot Sonya Silverman

Looked in that little Indian costume?

GUY 2

That was sick, man! She’s got those nice

Legs in that skirt with the fringes.

GUY 1

Dude, you’re starting to sound like a perv!

GUY 2

Sorry, I’m just saying what you’re thinking.

GUY 1

Hey, don’t tell anyone this, but I saw her

Walk out of the gym, and Mr. Stone following

After her.

Blake looks over to them as Amy and Madeline talk to each other.

GUY 2

So they’re like, getting freaky with each

Other?

GUY 1

I don’t know. She looked pretty freaked out

When she came back into the gym. Erin Blaine

Was talking to me about it.

GUY 2

She’s pretty hot too. And have you seen

Her mom?

He whistles. Guy 1 nods his head and then gets mad.

GUY 1

Dude, shut up and let me finish!

GUY 2

Sorry.

GUY 1

Anyway, she’s was telling me that she

Tried to ask Sonya if she was all right,

And she was like ‘I’m fine!’ and she

Was freaking out.

GUY 2

Whoa, that’s really weird.

Blake is listening intently to the conversation.

STARBUCKS CLERK

And for you?

He turns around and sees Madeline, Amy and the Starbucks Clerk looking at him.

BLAKE

What?

STARBUCKS CLERK

Would you like to order something?

BLAKE

Oh, right, uh, a chai tea latte please.

STARBUCKS CLERK

All right, your drinks we’ll be up in

A minute.

AMY

So he told me that his mom put this

Thing on his computer so that they can

Read what he IM’s to his friends. And one

Night, his mom printed out a conversation

Between him and Wendy Dubose, with him

Saying that they should meet someplace

Where they could be alone, and then she

Called Wendy’s mom…

Amy continues to gab on as Blake tries to get rid of the uneasy feeling.

CUT TO:

INT- SONYA’S ROOM- NIGHT TIME

Sonya and Erin are in her room. Erin is wearing a college sweater and flannel pants borrowed from Sonya. Her room is the size of a small McDonalds: not huge, but still pretty big.

They’re watching T.V. Sonya stares blankly at it.

ERIN

If I ever have to hear Dr. Cohen shitting

About ‘a fantastic start to the new year’

I will strangle myself.

Sonya just nods as she munches down on chips.

ERIN (cont’d)

And how Mr. Stripe just picks a random

Person to degrade and drag out of the

Gym. It’s so, dehumanizing.

SONYA

Mmhmm.

Erin looks over at Sonya. There’s something she’s not telling her.

ERIN

Okay, what is up with you?

SONYA

Nothing, I’m just concentrating on the

Movie.

ERIN

A, that isn’t a movie, it’s a T.V show.

And B, if you were concentrating on it,

Were you listening to a word I was saying?

SONYA

Of course I was! You were talking about

How annoying Dr. Cohen is with his ‘start

Of the new year’ speech.

Erin gives her an incredulous look.

SONYA (cont’d)

You’re my best friend. If anything was going

On, I would tell you first.

ERIN

Promise?

Sonya pauses for a moment.

SONYA

Promise.

ERIN

Sorry I freaked out.

SONYA

Don’t worry about it.

They give each other a hug, and go back to watching the T.V.

CUT TO:

INT- LUCILLE’S HOME- SAME TIME

Lucille is putting away her pirate costume. She walks into the living room, and sits down on the couch. She looks over to the pile of papers. Only half of them are graded.

She takes out a photo album from the drawer, and starts to look through it.

We see pictures of her family and friends back where she grew up in Los Angeles. She sees a picture of herself as a seven year old with her mom.

She puts the photo album down, and picks up the phone. She dials her mom’s number, and gets the answering machine.

LUCILLE

Mom. It’s Lucy. Oh yeah, it’s 3 hours behind there, so you’re probably eating dinner now. Anyway, the new job is going great. It’s a

Weird town. Well, not weird. It’s a nice town, it’s just…different. I’m starting to get cold here. It’s making me really miss the west coast. I have to go, now. I need to grade some papers. Give Danny my love, and I’ll talk to you later. Bye.

She hangs up the phone, and goes over to desk to grade papers.

CUT TO:

INT- HIGH SCHOOL- MONDAY

The bell for first period rings. Dr. Cohen comes over the intercom.

DR. COHEN

Happy Monday, everyone.

A kid passing the intercom gives it the middle finger, and walks on.

DR. COHEN (cont’d)

Today, we have a special announcement from

The soccer team. Here are Leslie Capperelli

And Sony Silverman.

Leslie and Sonya walk up to the intercom.

SONYA

Yesterday, the Panthers won the game against

Harrison. The cougars are going to the state

Championship.

LESLIE

Great playing by Michele Zimmerman, Ali Kane,

Mari Melgar, Tori Caserta, and Maria Gray.

And a special thanks to Brendan Gaffney for

Being a great mascot.

Sonya and Leslie lean in.

SONYA & LESLIE

Go Panthers!

DR. COHEN

That was hella great, girls.

Leslie and Sonya look at each other. Dr. Cohen continues with the announcements. Hector comes walking in. Sonya looks at him, quickly turns around, and walks out of the room.

CUT TO:

INT- LUCILLE’S CLASSROOM- LATER

Lucille is giving a lesson. Sonya can’t concentrate on what she’s saying. Her mind is fogging over with the image of Mr. Stone looking at her.

The bell for lunch rings. Everyone gets up and rushes out of the room, all except Sonya.

LUCILLE

Are you all right, Sonya?

SONYA

Yeah.

She starts to walk out, but stops.

SONYA

Actually, no.

Lucille looks up from her work.

SONYA

Can I talk to you about something?

LUCILLE

Sure, honey. Come and sit down.

Sonya slowly pulls up a chair and sits across from Lucille.

LUCILLE

What’s going on?

SONYA

Well, I…

She tries to figure out how to phrase it.

SONYA

Well, the other day, Mr. Stone…

LUCILLE

What about Mr. Stone?

SONYA

He, he…

Sonya starts to twirl a piece of hair between her fingers.

LUCILLE

It’s okay, you can tell me.

SONYA

He did some, things to me. And I, um, the

Things he did to me, made me feel a little

Uncomfortable.

LUCILLE

What do you mean by ‘things’?

Sonya looks at Lucille, hinting what she really means. Lucille drops her pen.

LUCILLE

Sonya, I need you to be specific. I need

To know exactly what he did.

SONYA

Okay.

CUT TO:

INT- MAIN OFFICE- LATER

Lucille rushes into the principal’s office with Sonya.

DR. COHEN

Why Lucille. What can I do for you?

LUCILLE

Sonya, tell them exactly what you told

Me.

DR. COHEN

Should we go someplace private?

SONYA

Yeah.

They go into a private room.

CUT TO:

INT- CHOIR ROOM- LATER ON

Hector is leading the class in a song when Dr. Cohen comes walking in.

DR. COHEN

Mr. Stone, can I see you after class.

HECTOR

Of course.

Blake and Amy are in the third row. They look at each other, wondering what’s going on. Amy shrugs.

They go outside, and Mr. Stripe comes in. Everyone straightens up.

CUT TO:

INT- LUCILLE’S HOUSE- NIGHT TIME

Lucille is sitting in her living room watching CSI: NY. Someone rings the doorbell. She gets the door, and sees that it’s Madeline and Blake standing at her doorway.

LUCILLE

Madeline, Blake. What are you doing here?

MADELINE

We wanted to ask you a couple of questions,

If that’s okay.

LUCILLE

Sure, come on in.

They come in and sit down.

BLAKE

Okay, so in choir today, Amy and I saw

Dr. Cohen pull Mr. Stone out of choir, and

Mr. Stripe came in to make sure we weren’t

Listening.

MADELINE

And now Erin is pissed at Sonya for not

Telling her that something was wrong.

What’s going on?

LUCILLE

I’m not sure if it’s my place to tell you.

MADELINE

Please? Everyone is this town has a secret.

It’ll be nice to have one less.

Lucille thinks about how many things have been kept from them.

LUCILLE

Okay, but please don’t go blabbing about this

To your friends. Dr. Cohen said that they’re

Trying to keep this under wraps.

Madeline and Blake nod their heads.

LUCILLE

So, Mr. Stone. He made a move on Sonya. No,

Not just one, a couple.

BLAKE

Are you serious?

LUCILLE

Yeah, and the Silvermans are taking legal action.

There’s been past accusations, so it’s probably

Going to get messy.

MADELINE

Oh yeah, Nelly Kimball told me about that one

Time on the DC Trip.

LUCILLE

DC trip?

MADELINE

It was the overnight trip last year. He chaperoned one of the busses. She said

He kept on touching her knee really weirdly.

LUCILLE

Oh. Well, if he ever did anything to you,

You would tell me, right?

MADELINE

Do you want the truth?

LUCILLE

Of course.

MADELINE

I’d kind of rather tell someone else. Don’t get me wrong; you’re really cool, but-

BLAKE

You’re just our teacher.

MADELINE

Exactly. But we really like you. It’s hard to explain.

LUCILLE

I understand. You kids should probably be

Getting home.

BLAKE

(To himself)

Yeah, my mom wouldn’t want to find out I’ve

Been talking to more girls than I should.

LUCILLE

What?

BLAKE

Nothing. See you tomorrow.

They walk out the door.

LUCILLE

Bye, Madeline.

Madeline turns around.

MADELINE

You can call me Maddy.

LUCILLE

Bye, Maddy.

She smiles, and waves good-bye as she runs over to her house. Lucille closes the door.

CUT TO:

INT- JUSTIN’S CLASROOM- NEXT DAY

Justin is finishing a topic, when kid raises his hand.

JUSTIN

Richard.

STUDENT

Who’s the student that got Mr. Stone in

The slammer?

Sonya freezes.

JUSTIN

That’s no one’s business but his or hers.

STUDENT

Please tell us.

STUDENT 2

Yeah! I’ve been dying to know.

STUDENT 3

I heard it was Jenny Stein.

Everyone starts gossiping. Someone next to Sonya asks Sonya what she thinks.

SONYA

I heard that it was Kayla Norton. Her dad’s

One of the best lawyer’s in town.

Justin looks at Sonya trying to cover it up. She gives him a pleading look.

JUSTIN

Everyone, unless you want another assignment

For tomorrow, quiet down.

They all quiet down.

JUSTIN

I know you have a lot of questions about this

Topic. At today’s assembly, I’m sure Dr. Cohen

Will be able to answer them. All right?

Everyone nods his or her head. Justin gets back to the lesson.

CUT TO:

INT- AUDITORIUM- LATER

Everyone is piling into the auditorium, with the teachers standing close by. Dr. Cohen is standing on the stage. Everyone is talking to each other, spinning their own stories of what happened.

GOSSIPER 1

I heard that he got the girl fake ID cause

She gave him head.

GOSSIPER 2

I thought he got her beer.

GOSSIPER 1

No, it was definitely a fake ID.

The camera pans quickly over to 3 older students.

JUNIOR GIRL 1

I heard that people’s parents are suing

The school for questioning the kinds.

JUNIOR GIRL 2

Is that illegal?

JUNIOR BOY

If you do it without the parent’s permission,

Then it is.

JUNIOR GIRL 1

But I seriously can’t believe he would do

Something like this.

The camera quickly pans over to 2 jocks.

JOCK 1

Mr. Stone? No way man, I always thought he

Was gay!

JOCK 2

I know! And they’re still paying him while

He’s in jail.

JOCK 1

That’s fucking crazy, man!

The camera shows all the students gossiping away. Erin walks in with her new, dark blue hair, and sits down. She looks over to Sonya, who is sitting with some other friends.

DR. COHEN

Can I have your attention please? Everyone,

Can I please have your attention?

No one listens. Dr. Cohen sighs.

DR. COHEN

Mr. Stripe, if you please.

Mr. Stripe comes barreling down to the front.

MR. STRIPE

Hey!! Sit down and be quiet!!

Everyone immediately quiets down.

DR. COHEN

Thank you. Now, you all know about what’s been

Going on this last week. I’ll be happy to answer

Any questions you have.

People raise their hands, and Dr. Cohen picks on a kid from the front row.

STUDENT IN FRONT ROW

Is Mr. Stone coming back?

DR. COHEN

Well, we’ll see. Anyone else?

He picks on another kid.

STUDENT IN BACK

How come you questioned people without asking

The parents first?

DR. COHEN

Well, I can assure you, young man, that’s just

A silly rumor.

Lucille and Justin stand in the aisles, a little surprised with his answers.

STUDENT IN BACK

But my mom said-

DR. COHEN

Next Question.

He picks on another question.

STUDENT IN THIRD ROW

If people accused him of things before this,

How come you let him go on the DC trip?

DR. COHEN

We had absolutely had no idea whatsoever

Of any allegations before this.

Lucille and Justin stare at Dr. Cohen in shock.

LUCILLE

He’s kidding, right?

JUSTIN

I don’t think so.

DR. COHEN

If there’s anything else, we will let you

All know.

He looks up at the clock. It reads ten to three.

DR. COHEN

Well, its time to go. Enjoy the rest of

The day, everyone.

Everyone piles out of the auditorium. Justin walks down to Dr. Cohen.

JUSTIN

Dr. Cohen, what are you doing?

DR. COHEN

I’m just making sure that no one knows

Too much.

JUSTIN

Sir, they’re-

DR. COHEN

Students, I’m very aware of that.

JUSTIN

People, Dr. Cohen. They’re people who deserve

To know the truth. They have the right to know

What’s happening in their school.

DR. COHEN

Justin, I couldn’t let a bunch of teenagers

Knowing that they’ve bit being taught how

To sing by a pedophile.

JUSTIN

I understand that, sir. But-

DR. COHEN

Mr. Stripe.

Mr. Stripe gets in front of Justin and gives him a brooding look.

DR. COHEN

Have a good day, Justin.

Justin turns around and tries to contain his anger. Lucille follows him out to the parking lot.

LUCILLE

Justin, wait.

JUSTIN

I’m fine. I’m just a little upset.

LUCILLE

A little?

JUSTIN

Okay, really upset. But I’ll just deal with

It.

LUCILLE

You shouldn’t have to ‘deal’ with it.

They walk through the parking lot to his car.

LUCILLE (cont’d)

You’re the one who’s right.

JUSTIN

Who’s right and who’s wrong doesn’t matter,

Lucille.

LUCILLE

But it should.

JUSTIN

No, it really doesn’t. He’s my boss, do you think

I’d still have my job if I told Dr. Cohen what I

Really thought about this.

Lucille tries to answer, but she knows he’s right.

JUSTIN (cont’d)

Exactly. I just have to suck it up.

LUCILLE

But, that’s bullshit.

JUSTIN

Life’s full of bullshit.

He gets into his car and drives off, leaving Lucille standing in the parking lot.

CUT TO:

EXT- BLAKE’S HOUSE- AFTERNOON

Madeline is running to Blake’s house with the newspaper in her hand. She knocks on the door, and Alice answers.

ALICE

Madeline! Hi there! What’s happening?

MADELINE

Hi, Alice. Is Blake home?

ALICE

Yes, he’s in the kitchen.

MADELINE

Thanks.

She runs to the living room, where Blake is playing Kingdom Hearts. He sees Madeline, and turns the video game off.

BLAKE

What’s going on?

MADELINE

Hey, check this out.

She slaps the newspaper down on the table. It has Mr. Stone’s mug shot, along with an article about the accusations.

BLAKE

Holy shit!

MADELINE

I know!!

BLAKE

That doesn’t even look like him. It’s looks

Like Mr. Stone on crack.

MADELINE

It does.

She looks down, and sees Sonya’s name is mentioned. She looks at the name in despair.

MADELINE

Oh my God.

BLAKE

What.

MADELINE

They put Sonya’s name in the article.

BLAKE

Seriously?

Alice comes into the room.

ALICE

Hey, guys. What’s going on?

BLAKE

Nothing, mom.

ALICE

Oh, come on. What’s happening? What’s

The scoop?

She looks down and sees the article about Mr. Stone. The smile on her face fades.

ALICE

I don’t think you kids should be reading

That.

BLAKE

Mom, we already know what’s going on. It

Doesn’t make too much of a difference.

ALICE

Well I don’t want it in my house. Madeline,

I would appreciate it if you put the article

Away now.

MADELINE

Sorry, Alice.

She puts the newspaper in her bag. Alice smiles and walks out of the room.

BLAKE

Remind me to never have people come over

To meet my parents.

MADELINE

You’re parents are cool.

He gives her a condescending look.

MADELINE

Okay, you’re dad’s cool.

BLAKE

Yeah, the one who’s never around. The one

Who is home hates me.

MADELINE

She doesn’t hate you.

BLAKE

No, she just wants me to hang out with guys,

Start dating you, and get better grades than

I already do!

MADELINE

Blake-

BLAKE

Stop! I’m sick of her, I’m sick of this

Town, I’m sick of every fucking thing!

Madeline doesn’t speak to let Blake cool down for a minute.

MADELINE

Are you sick of me?

BLAKE

Yeah, a little bit.

Madeline just stares at Blake. She gets up, and walks out.

MADELINE

I’ll see you later.

BLAKE

Maddy, wait a minute.

She turns around and stares coldly at him. She slams the gate behind her and walks back to her house.

BLAKE

Shit.

CUT TO:

INT- BLAINE LIVING ROOM- LATER

Madeline walks through the door and goes up to her room. Erin is looking through the pile of mail

INGRID

Do I want to know?

ERIN

My guess is no.

She sees a letter from the school addressed to the parents of Madeline and Erin Blaine. She opens it, and reads it to herself. She sighs and rolls her head.

ERIN

Mom, the school sent us a bullshit letter.

INGRID

Erin! Watch your language!

ERIN

Come on, listen to this.

She reads it aloud. Madeline comes downstairs.

MADELINE

What’s going on?

INGRID

A letter from the school.

ERIN

‘Dear Parents, we have been very distraught

By the accusations against the choir teacher

Hector Stone. ‘

INGRID

Ooo, distraught. Nice use of words to make something sound important.

ERIN (cont’d)

‘We know that your kids are very emotional at

This time, as we are. We urge you to take some

Time with your kids and talk to them about how

They’re feeling. We know how kids can have trouble deciding what they’re emotions are, so

Please try to be courteous. Sincerely, Dr. Adam

Cohen.’

INGRID

And that’s supposed to be encouraging?

MADELINE

That’s not encouraging, that’s ridiculous!

ERIN

I know exactly where this should go.

She rips it up, and throws it into the trash.

INT- LUCILLE’S HOUSE- LATER

Lucille walks in the door in a huff. She presses the play button on her answering machine.

LUCILLE’S MOM (V.O.)

Hi, honey. It’s mom.

Lucille turns around.

LUCILLE’S MOM (cont’d)

I got your message. It’s so nice to hear from

You. When I come and visit you in the summer,

You have to show me the yearbook! Anyway, Danny

Met someone! His name is Eric, and he’s really

Sweet. He’s so eager to meet you! Oh, darn it,

I just remembered this is long distance. I have

To go now, but I love you, and I’m so proud of

You.

The machine beeps. Lucille sighs, and flops down onto the couch.

CUT TO:

EXT- SCHOOL HALLWAYS- NEXT MORNING

Everyone is talking about one thing, and one thing only. Lucille walks through the hallways, and can’t even hear herself think. The camera pans around to a bunch of different kids.

FRSHMAN GIRL 1

I heard that he brought her to his apartment

And they went all the way.

FRESHMAN GIRL 2

Holy crap, all the way?

She shakes her head, the camera pans over to rich white kid with his “Crew”.

GHETTO KID

Hey son, he was probably like “Ooo, that honey

has some lovely lady lumps, I should totally

hit that” and she was like “I’ve got some friends

at the Holiday Inn.”

His friends cheer him on, as he basks in his glory. The camera pans over to some Seniors who obviously rule the school.

SENIOR GIRL 1

I am so sickened by this whole ordeal.

The sooner I get out of this school-

A dorky girl, named Becca, passes by, and the senior girl rams her shoulder into her. Becca passes sheepishly by, while the senior girl sneers at her.

SENIOR GIRL 1

-The better. And I better not run into

anyone from here at U Penn.

SENIOR GIRL 2

To hell with the east coast, I’m going to UCLA.

Lucille tries to unlock her door, but it won’t budge. She finally unlocks it as the bell rings.

CUT TO:

INT- LUCILLE’S CLASSROOM- LATER

The classroom is completely quiet. They’re all staring at Lucille.

LUCILLE

Well, I’m suppose to take this class to talk

To you guys about your feelings. But I’m pretty

Sure you don’t want to do that.

Everyone shakes their head.

LUCILLE (cont’d)

Right, thought so. Well, if anyone wants to

Open up the floor for discussion on the book,

Feel free.

A kid raises his hand.

LUCILLE

Kyle.

KYLE

Are you scared?

LUCILLE

Of what?

KYLE

I saw the sepina calling you to be a witness

For the trial. Are you scared?

LUCILLE

I’m not sure if that’s appropriate to discuss

In class.

The class starts to beg her to tell them.

LUCILLE

I’m a little scared. I’ve never been in a

Court room, I just see them on Law and Order.

But it’s just part of life, you know. You have

To do things you’re scared to do, but doing it

Means doing the right thing.

The bell for second period rings. Everybody gets up and shoots out.

LUCILLE

Have a good rest of the day, everyone.

Becca is standing in the doorway.

LUCILLE

Becca, hi. You know it’s a blue day, so it’s

5th period.

BECCA

I know, I was just wondering if I could talk

To you about something.

LUCILLE

Well, class is about to begin. How about you

Come here during lunch, and we talk about

Whatever you want.

BECCA

Okay.

She walks to her next class, and Lucille shuts the door.

CUT TO:

INT- LUCILLE’S ROOM- LUNCHTIME

Becca walks in and sees Lucille.

LUCILLE

Hey there.

BECCA

Hi, Ms. Redding.

She goes and sits down across from her.

LUCILLE

So what was it that you wanted to talk about?

BECCA

Were you popular in high school?

LUCILLE

What?

BECCA

I’m sure you were. You’re so beautiful and nice.

LUCILLE

Thanks, Becca. That’s very nice.

BECCA

Have you ever lied about something kind of

Big, just to see if maybe people would notice?

LUCILLE

No. Why, have you?

Becca looks down. She tries not to cry.

LUCILE

Are you okay?

BECCA

He didn’t do anything to me. He never touched

Me or anything like that.

LUCILLE

Who, Becca.

BECCA

You know who.

Lucille realizes whom she’s talking about.

LUCILLE

Oh my God. Becca, why would you do that?

Do you know how serious this is?

BECCA

Yes.

LUCILLE

Honey, why did you do this?

BECCA

People always expect pretty and popular McBuffy

to be the Poor defenseless victim. Sometimes it can be The ugly girl who doesn’t have too many friends, or cars, or outfits from Lacoste. I wanted to prove something, Ms. Redding. I wanted to prove them wrong for once.

Lucille is stunned. She tries to think of how to handle the situation.

LUCILLE

We’re going to have to go to Dr. Cohen and

Tell them about this.

BECCA

Can I ask you one more question before we

Go?

Lucille turns around and looks at Becca.

BECCA

Was it completely wrong to do this?

Lucille can’t come up with an answer. She looks in Becca’s eyes and sees someone she knew in high school: herself.

LUCILLE

Yes and no.

Becca gives Lucille a weak smile. She gets up, and follows her out.

INT- LUCILLE’S HOUSE- NIGHT TIME

Lucille drops her things by the doorway. The phone rings, and she picks it up.

LUCILLE

Hello?

INGRID

Lucille, hey. It’s Ingrid.

Lucille perks up.

LUCILLE

Ingrid, hi.

INGRID

Are you doing anything tomorrow morning?

LUCILLE

No, I’m free.

INGRID

Great. I was wondering if you’d like to

Go get some coffee together.

LUCILLE

Really?

INGRID

Yeah, really?

LUCILLE

Sure, I’d love to.

CUT TO:

INT- COFFEE SHOP- NEXT MORNING

Lucille and Ingrid are sitting in the coffee shop.

INGRID

So how has teaching at the high school

Been going?

LUCILLE

Great. Your daughters are wonderful.

INGRID

Thank you.

LUCILLE

Seriously. Erin is always second guessing

Herself, but in a good way. It’s like she

Always dig for deeper answer.

Ingrid is surprised. She hasn’t met teacher that’s had such enthusiasm for her daughters.

LUCILLE (cont’d)

And Maddy is just so eager to learn. She’s

Different than Erin, though. She gets to

Her answers and they’re very straight forward.

And Blake, what a sweet heart, he always raising

His hand and participating…

She sees Ingrid intently looking at her.

LUCILLE (cont’d)

I’m sorry. I talk way too much.

INGRID

No, no. That was great.

LUCILLE

It was.

INGRID

Yeah. You actually see the kids as individuals.

I don’t know a lot of teachers who do that.

And Blake is a sweetheart. I just wish Alice

Would see that?

LUCILLE

Alice?

INGRID

Blake’s mom. She loves him, she just expects him

To be the star athlete with the cheerleader by

His side and his team on the other.

LUCILLE

But he’s not.

INGRID

No, he’s much better than that. Do you plan

On having kids?

LUCILLE

Someday.

INGRID

I can’t preach on how to raise them the right

Way, but I can give you the one thing that

Always works.

Lucille listens intently.

INGRID

Just love them for who they are. If they’re

The star athlete or the smartest kid in class,

Or just a regular kid. They just want to know

That you’re proud to call them your own.

LUCILLE

How do you love them the right way?

INGRID

I don’t think I can answer that. It just depends

On the kid. But I can see you’ll make a great

Mom.

LUCILLE

Thanks.

A young woman in her thirties comes up to Ingrid.

COFFEE SHOP GIRL

Excuse me, how do you get to the post office?

INGRID

Jut go down York Street, make a left at Stop

And Shop and it should be the building across

The street.

As he gives directions, the woman realizes who Ingrid is.

COFFEE SHOP GIRL

Oh my God. Oh my God! You’re Ingrid Macelina!!

INGRID

Have we met?

COFFEE SHOP GIRL

No, but I’d always see you in Vogue and

In Style!! I am such a huge fan of your

Modeling career.

Ingrid blushes. The woman takes out a pen and piece of paper.

COFFEE SHOP GIRL

Could I get your autograph?

INGRID

Um, sure.

She signs the piece of paper as Lucille watches in admiration and fascination.

COFFEE SHOP GIRL

Where have you been? The modeling world

Misses you!

INGRID

Well, I’ve been working as an advertising

Executive, and I have two daughters.

COFFEE SHOP GIRL

Do you have pictures?

She takes out a picture of Madeline and Erin together.

COFFEE SHOP GIRL

Oh, they’re so gorgeous! You should get

Them to do some modeling!

INGRID

Well, whatever they end up doing, I’ll

Be happy.

The woman checks her watch.

COFFEE SHOP GIRL

Oh, I have to go. But it was so cool to

Finally meet you.

INGRID

It was nice to meet you too.

The woman leaves the coffee shop.

INGRID

I’m really sorry about that.

LUCILLE

No, it was cool. You still have fans.

Ingrid just looks down at her coffee.

LUCILLE

If you don’t mind me asking, how come

You quit modeling?

INGRID

Well, I got married, had kids. Life just,

Moved on.

LUCILLE

Do you miss it?

INGRID

Yeah, I do.

LUCILLE

Well then why don’t you go back? You would

Be so good.

INGRID

I have my job that I love. And I’m too old

Anyway.

LUCILLE

No you’re not.

INGRID

It’s more complicated that. I can’t just

Go back and leave behind what I already have.

That person you saw walking down the runway

At my house…

LUCILLE

Yes?

INGRID

She’s gone. I left her behind a long time

Ago.

She pauses for a moment.

INGRID

But that’s all been said and done. Now, I

Couldn’t be happier with the life I have.

LUCILLE

As long as you’re happy, right?

Ingrid smiles radiantly. Lucille can’t help but secretly idolize her. Two large women in tracksuits and spandex come barreling in.

TRACKSUIT WOMAN 1

Can you believe they would let that creep

Teach our children?!

TRACKSUIT WOMAN 2

I know! That Dr. Cohen is the biggest sham

Since Milli Vanilli!!

TRACKSUIT WOMAN 1

I know!! When my Sam came home telling me

About this I nearly lost my hair.

They barrel back to the coffee shop. Lucille and Ingrid struggle to contain their laughter.

INGRID

It wouldn’t be so awful if she lost that

Mop on her head.

Lucille laughs.

LUCILLE

The eighties called. They want their spandex

Back.

They laugh at that, and Lucille suddenly stops.

INGRID

Oh my God. I sound like one of those girls

Erin goes to school with.

The vision of Becca’s sad and lonely eyes flash into her head.

LUCILLE

Yesterday, there was a girl, Becca, who came

To me during lunch. She told me that she made

Up the charges she pressed against Mr. Stone.

INGRID

She did? Why?

LUCILLE

Because of the rich little McBuffy’s that plague

The school. She thought maybe people would at

Least pity her if she told them what they wanted

To hear. Then when we were going to the main office, she looked up me and asked me If what she

Did was completely wrong, and I saw…

She looks out the window, and looks back at Ingrid.

LUCILLE (cont’d)

I saw me. I saw the flat chested girl with bad

Hair and braces that I was in high school. It

Was weird, a little scared. I don’t know, I felt

A lot of things.

INGRID

You’re probably one of the only people she’s

Ever reached out to like that.

LUCILLE

I hope not.

CUT TO:

INT- SONYA’S ROOM- LATER

Sonya is sitting in her room with her dad. He’s going over what they’re going to do in court.

SONYA’S DAD

…And whatever you do, don’t look at the jury.

It’ll make it seem like you’ve made this whole

Thing up. Got it?

SONYA

(Quietly)

Yes.

SONYA’S DAD

You got it? Cause you need to get this down.

SONYA

I said yes Dad.

SONYA’S DAD

Good. We need to get this sick fuck in

Jail.

Sonya’s cell phone rings. She turns around, and silently says “Thank You”.

SONYA’S DAD

We’ll talk about it later, sweetie.

He kisses her one the head, and leaves the room. She picks up her phone.

SONYA

Hello?

ERIN

Hi, it’s me.

SONYA

Oh, hey. What’s going on?

ERIN

Well, Maddy, she really wants to know when

The court date is. I said I’d try to find

Out, but I wasn’t promising anything.

SONYA

It’s next week, on the sixteenth.

ERIN

Oh, thanks.

SONYA

No problem.

There’s a strange moment of silence over the phone.

SONYA

Erin?

ERIN

Yeah?

SONYA

Oh, sorry. Just seeing if you’re still there.

ERIN

Are you nervous?

SONYA

What?

ERIN

Are you nervous about the trial?

SONYA

No, of course not. Not really…

ERIN

Well, I think it’s really ballsy of you.

You know, going up on the stand and… wait,

Do you have to put your hand on the Bible

If you’re Jewish?

A smile sneaks onto Sonya’s face.

SONYA

Actually, I’m not sure. That’s a really

Good question.

Erin starts to laugh.

ERIN

I’m sorry.

SONYA

It’s okay.

Ingrid calls Erin’s name from downstairs.

ERIN

I have to go now. I’ll talk to you

Later.

SONYA

All right. And I’ll ask my dad about the

Whole Bible thing.

ERIN

Cool. See you later.

SONYA

Bye.

They hang up the phone. Erin gets up and goes downstairs.

CUT TO:

INT- COURT ROOM- A WEEK LATER- AFTERNOON

“One Week Later” fades onto the screen. Ingrid drops off Madeline and Erin.

INGRID

Call me when you need to get picked up.

ERIN

We will. Bye, mom.

MADELINE

Bye, mommy. I mean, mom.

INGRID

Bye, sweetie.

Madeline looks over and sees Lucille getting out of her car. She calls over to her.

MADELINE

Lucille!!

(To Erin and Ingrid)

I’m going to go say hi to her.

ERIN

All right.

She runs off to Lucille. Ingrid watches her youngest daughter run off.

INGRID

And there she goes.

ERIN

Cheer up. She’ll come back.

Lucille looks over and sees Madeline running over to her.

LUCILLE

Hey, Maddy. I didn’t know you were coming.

MADELINE

I came with Erin.

LUCILLE

I think Blake is coming too.

MADELINE

Oh.

LUCILLE

What’s wrong?

MADELINE

Nothing, we just got into a little bit of

An argument last week.

LUCILLE

Do you think you’ll talk to him again.

MADELINE

NO. Maybe.

LUCILLE

You never know what the future has in store.

MADELINE

That’s so cliché.

LUCILLE

Hey, you may be in high school, but you still

Have some growing up to do.

MADELINE

I know. I just want to grow up now.

LUCILLE

Why? Just enjoy being 15 while you still can.

MADELINE

I’ll try.

Everyone is piling into the courtroom to watch the trial. Madeline takes the last seat next to Blake.

PLANTIFF

All rise.

Everyone rises. JUDGE SOVEREIGN, 55, comes strutting in.

PLANTIFF

The honorable Judge Sovereign proceeds.

SOVEREIGN

Please be seated.

Everyone sits.

SOVEREIGN

The first witness called to the stand is

Lucille Redding.

CUT TO:

Lucille is sitting in the witness chair. Sonya’s Dad is questioning her. Justin is watching her from the fifth row.

SONYA’S DAD

When was the last time you talked to

Mr. Stone?

LUCILLE

My first day at Demonasville High School.

SONYA’S DAD

And did he say anything that sounded strange

Or suspicious to you.

LUCILLE

When I said that Sonya was a very nice girl,

He just looked down at his coffee.

SONYA’S DAD

What was the expression on his face?

LUCILLE

I couldn’t really tell. His face was really low.

SONYA’S DAD

Did you see him any other time?

LUCILLE

During ninth period, when he was grabbing

Sonya’s face.

People watching look at each other ad whisper.

SONYA’S DAD

Really? And did he say anything?

LUCILLE

He said he would smack her all the way to

Jupiter if she didn’t stop talking to her

Friends.

SONYA’S DAD

No further questions.

He goes and sits down. HECTOR’S LAWYER, 42, gets up, and walks towards Lucille.

HECTOR’S LAWYER

Now Lucille. Can I call you Lucille?

LUCILLE

Yes.

HECTOR’S LAWYER

Right then. You said you couldn’t see the

Expression on his face. And did he say anything?

LUCILLE

No, he didn’t.

HECTOR’S LAWYER

That could’ve meant a lot of things. It could’ve

Meant that he didn’t like her, it could’ve meant

That he liked her, or that he simply didn’t have

An opinion on the matter.

LUCILLE

I suppose.

HECTOR’S LAWYER

And when you were talking about how Mr. Stone

Grabbed Sonya’s head. Did she seem to enjoy it?

LUCILLE

Yes.

HECTOR’S LAWYER

Was she laughing?

LUCILLE

Yes.

HECTOR’S DAD

No further questions.

SOVEREIGN

You may take your seat, Lucille.

Lucille goes to sit down.

SOVEREIGN

Coming up to the witness stand is Sonya

Silverman.

Sonya bravely gets up, and walks to the witness stand. Her dad gets up.

SONYA’S DAD

Now Sonya, tell us exactly what happened

When you were going to soccer practice?

SONYA

I was walking down the hall, and Mr. Stone

Came up to me, and he started talking to

Me.

SONYA’S DAD

What did he say to you?

SONYA

He said that I was the most gorgeous

Soccer player he’d ever seen, and that

I should be a model.

SONYA’S DAD

And did that make you feel uncomfortable?

SONYA

The model thing was kind of nice, but it

Did make me feel uncomfortable.

SONYA’S DAD

Did he do anything else.

SONYA

He said I had nice legs, and he started to slide

His hand down my thighs.

SONYA’S DAD

Did that make you feel uncomfortable?

Hector is looking straight at Sonya.

SONYA

Yes.

SONYA’S DAD

What did you do after that?

SONYA

I started walking away.

SONYA’S DAD

Did he ever do that to you again?

SONYA

Yes, the night of the dance. He followed me

Outside.

SONYA’S DAD

No further questions, your honor.

He sits down. It’s now Hector’s Lawyer’s turn.

HECTOR’S LAWYER

You said you walked away when he grabbed

Your leg.

SONYA

Yes.

HECTOR’S LAWYER

Did you, at anytime, tell him to stop, or

That it made you feel uncomfortable?

SONYA

No, it didn’t cross my mind.

HECTOR’S LAWYER

And the night of the dance, when he followed

You outside. Did you ever think to walk away?

SONYA

Well, I didn’t want him to follow me anywhere

Else. I thought maybe he would leave.

HECTOR’S LAWYER

You thought he would leave. You didn’t know

He would do that. You thought he would.

SONYA’S DAD

Objection, your honor.

SOVEREIGN

Sustained.

HECTOR’S LAWYER

No further questions.

He goes and sits down.

SONYA

Can I go sit down, please?

SOVEREIGN

Yes you may, Ms. Silverman.

She gets up, and goes back to her seat.

SOVEREIGN

It is now time for the jury to deliberate.

He bangs his mallet. Everyone gets up to go outside. The jury gets up and goes to a private room.

SONYA

Dad?

SONYA’S DAD

Yes, Sonya.

SONYA

I want to go home.

SONYA’S DAD

Sonya, you can’t.

SONYA

Daddy, please. I just want to go home.

SONYA’S DAD

You have to stay for the verdict. I’m

Sorry.

Sonya turns around, and walks outside. Erin walks over to her, and hugs her.

ERIN

You totally showed that jury who’s right.

SONYA

Thanks. I just want this shit to be over

And done with.

ERIN

It will. Soon.

The camera goes over to Lucille and Madeline, who are talking to each other. Blake comes outside.

LUCILLE

I’ll be right back.

She leaves them together.

BLAKE

Hey.

MADELINE

Hi.

She looks around, and sees all the people standing around.

BLAKE

I’d get sappy, apologize, and hug you until

You suffocate, but I figure it would be

Better to do later.

MADELINE

Yeah, good point.

Everyone starts to go back inside. The jury comes back in and remains standing.

SOVEREIGN

Has the jury reached a verdict?

JUROR

We have, your honor.

SOVEREIGN

Proceed.

JUROR

We the jury, find Hector Stone guilty of

Sexual harassment and endangerment of a

Child.

SOVEREIGN

The defendant is sentenced to fifteen years

Of prison. Court is adjourned.

The bang of his mallet echoes in the courtroom. Everyone gets up. Sonya’s Dad goes and hugs Sonya.

SONYA’S DAD

We did it honey! We got the bastard!

She forces a smile.

SONYA

Yeah dad. We did it.

She looks at Lucille, who is looking back at her. Madeline and Blake pass by Lucille.

LUCILLE

Hey, do you guys want a ride home?

MADELINE

No thanks, I got my mom coming to get us.

LUCILLE

I understand.

There’s a moment of mutual respect between the three of them. Erin calls to Madeline.

ERIN

Maddy, mom’s here!

MADELINE

Coming! Bye Lucille. I’m sorry, I meant

Ms. Redding.

LUCILLE

Bye, Maddy. Bye, Blake.

BLAKE

Bye, Ms. Redding. We’ll see you on Monday.

They walk out to the street, where Ingrid is waiting in the car.

INGRID

Well?

ERIN

Guilty.

INGRID

I’m not surprised. Hi, Blake.

BLAKE

Hi, Ingrid. Could I get a ride?

INGRID

Sure.

They all get in. Erin sticks her head out of the window, and waves to Sonya. She waves back. They drive away.

CUT TO:

EXT- BLAKE’S HOUSE- LATER

Ingrid pulls up in front of Blake’s house. They get out of the car, and stand in front of his house.

BLAKE

So, I’ll see you on Monday.

MADELINE

Or we could go see a movie or something tomorrow.

BLAKE

Sure.

MADELINE

I’ll call you when I get home.

BLAKE

I’m sorry.

MADELINE

It’s okay.

They embrace each other. They could never stay mad at each other.

MADELINE

Love you, B.

BLAKE

Love you too, bitch.

Madeline looks at Blake.

BLAKE

Kidding.

They give each other a last hug, and Madeline runs back to the car. Blake goes inside as they drive off.

CUT TO:

EXT- LUCILLE’S HOUSE- LATER

Lucille is pulling into the driveway. She sees Madeline walking over to her.

LUCILLE

Hi, Maddy.

MADELINE

Hey. Is it okay if I e-mail you something

Tonight?

LUCILLE

Sure. What is it?

MADELINE

Well, I just started, but it’s about this

Girl named Lana, and she just started living

In this town that inhabited by ghosts and

Vampires.

LUCILLE

Wow, sounds intense.

MADELINE

And when they destroy her home, she goes to

Live with these two people named Mandy and

Brett, who help her defeat the vampires.

Lucille gets the connection. She smiles, and strokes Madeline’s hair.

LUCILLE

I’d love to read it.

Ingrid calls Madeline from the porch.

INGRID

Madeline, come inside, we’re ordering Japanese

Tonight!

Madeline smiles.

MADELINE

I have to go, but what’ your e-mail?

LUCILLE

Lr24@.

MADELINE

Great. I’ll send it to you tonight.

LUCILLE

See you later, kiddo.

Lucille gives Madeline a wink. She smiles, and runs back to her house. Lucille walks back inside.
