COURSE GOALS:
• Learn to recognize that statistics are everywhere
• Analyze data in order to form statistical conclusions
• Learn how to read and discuss studies presented in the media to determine if they are supported and logical
• Understand rules of probability and counting
TO GET ABSENT WORK, NOTES, AND WORKSHEETS FROM CLASS:
• All extra worksheets are kept in the classroom
• It is your responsibility to find out what assignments, notes, and/or tests you have missed
• Students will have a chapter assignment sheet with all homework assignments listed on it
• Absences due to truancies will result in a score of 0 on all missed work
MATERIALS NEEDED IN CLASS EACH DAY:
• Pencil, eraser, pen, notebook, book and folder
• Scientific/Graphing Calculator…TI 30, TI 36, TI 83, TI 84, or TI Nspire (bring manual!)
HOMEWORK & QUIZZES (20% of the trimester grade):
• Label all assignments with name, page numbers, and problem numbers
• Show all your work and circle your answers
• Work together on daily assignments, however, copying assignments is not working together and will be treated as cheating
• Homework assignments will only be accepted if they are corrected by you before they are turned in and fixed if they are incorrect. Circle the problems that are wrong in a different color (do not erase) and put the correct answer next to the problem. Write the number missed at the top of your paper.
• Each assignment is worth 5 points
• Homework will be accepted for full credit up until the day of the test (after that, it will be accepted but will not earn full credit)
• There are 5 point extra credit practice quizzes online available to anyone with Internet access. Go to sta; choose quizzes, and then the chapter.
• One or two quizzes will be given per chapter. These quizzes must be corrected and retaken before a test score will count towards a grade.
TESTS (65% of the trimester grade):
• You have the opportunity to retake each test if you have all of your homework in for that unit by the day of the test.
• If homework is complete, you will do a review assignment, do test corrections before or after school and then retake the test.
• You will have two chapters to finish the retake of a test. Your score will be the retest score even if it is worse than the first one.
FINAL (15% of the trimester grade):
• This is a cumulative test covering the entire trimester’s material.
GRADING SCALE:
A = 93 – 100% B = 83 – 86.9% C = 73 – 76.9% F = below 60%
A- = 90 – 92.9% B- = 80 – 82.9% C- = 70 – 72.9%
B+ = 87 – 89.9% C + = 77 – 79.9% D = 60 – 69.9%
TARDIES:
• Be on time to class
• If you are tardy more than three times, you will serve 15 minutes of detention before or after school for each tardy after 3.
IF YOU NEED HELP:
• Ask questions in class as soon as you are confused
• Read and study your book and notes. Use the online resources
• Stay caught up with the daily assignments
• Get help outside of class as soon as you are confused (I am available almost every day)
CLASS RULES:
• Be respectful!!! Be responsible!!!
• No phone calls or texting during class during instruction time. You may listen to music during work time ONLY. If this privilege is abused, we will change the rule.
I am excited to work with each and every one of you, students and parents/guardians included. As long as you work hard, ask questions and do your homework, every student can be successful in Statistics and Probability.
Please call or e-mail if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Deb Polchow
