GEOMETRY: COURSE SYLLABUS

Mrs. Rousso

Room: 212B

942749@

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Students in this course will study the use of definitions, conjectures, postulates, and theorems in the study of angles, triangles, congruency, perpendicular and parallel lines, symbolic logic, direct and indirect proofs, geometric inequalities, elementary coordinate geometry, constructions, polygonal regions and their areas, similarity, circles and spheres, volumes of solid and elementary trigonometry.

HONORS COURSE:

Honors level courses are deeper and faster paced than the regular college courses, and assume a considerable amount of time and interest on the part of the student and as well as a high level of performance. Students should demonstrate a keen ability to work with abstract concepts, learn and apply new ideas at an accelerated pace and work well independently.  Recommendation of the teacher and successful completion of prerequisites are requirements for these courses. .

GRADING SCALE:

A = 100-90

B = 89-80

C = 79-70

D = 69-60

F = 59-0

GRADING POLICY:

Tests 35%

Projects 20%

Quizzes 25%

Homework 15%

Participation 5%

CRITERIA FOR CREDIT:

In order to learn math concepts presented in class, the student must be prepared to study course material every day. This means the student should make time daily, outside of school time, to study. The amount of time needed for this outside study will vary depending on the student’s understanding and course work being presented.

Homework will be assigned daily, and the student is expected to come to class with all homework assignments completed. Homework will be collected on a daily basis, and the grading will be given on the amount of the homework completed and on student effort and/or accuracy depending on the individual assignment. After two missing home works, the student will be issued a detention. A detention will be issued after each consequent homework missed thereafter. When completing assignments, the student will show ALL the steps used to solve the problems. Generally simply writing the answer will not be acceptable. I operate under the rule of “NO WORK- NO CREDIT”. This is not a negotiable issue with me. I believe that detailing a problem’s solution, a student will gain a better understanding of the math processes involved. This understanding will prove beneficial to the student in future course work. This rule applies to all work assigned, including test.

ALL WORK MUST BE DONE IN PENCIL.

NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS will be accepted for a grade. Students missing class for extra curricular activities are not excused form assignment deadlines. If a student is absent on the day an assignment is due, they must have that assignment on the day of their return.

All work is to be legible and completed on time. Papers must be clearly marked with STUDENT NAME, DATE, PERIOD, AND ASSIGNMENT TITLE. Papers without a name or assignment title will be given back without credit.

Students are responsible for getting all make-up work. Due to the nature of the course, missing class time is detrimental to the student’s progress. Bottom line…don’t miss class if at all possible.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

Students are expected to be honest and ethical in their academic work. Academic dishonesty is defined as an intentional act of deception in one of the following areas:

❖ Cheating – use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information or study aids

❖ Fabrication – falsification or invention of any information

❖ Assisting - helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty

❖ Tampering – altering or interfering with evaluation instruments and documents

❖ Plagiarism – representing the words or ideas of another person as one’s own.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR EXPECTIONS:

❖ Be seated and prepared when the bell rings.

❖ Be respectful of teachers, students, and school property.

❖ Participate constructively and positively in class activities and assignments.

❖ No cell phones or electronic devices – iPods, MP3’s, CD players, headphones, etc. (If seen or heard, it will be taken away and a parent must pick it up from administration after 24 hours)

DAILY MATERIALS:

• Pencils ONLY (I recommend using mechanical pencils)

• College ruled filler paper

• Scientific Calculator (NO graphing calculators) - I recommend either the TI-30XS Multiview (this version is built into the EOC Assessment) or TI-30X IIS– sharing calculators or using an electronic device is prohibited

Essential Information for

Geometry (Regular & Honors courses)

• Log-in information

o School ID: doral acms-33172

o User name: student’s first and last name (No space in-between, for example: Mister Pulido would be misterpulido)

• Deadlines

o Deadlines are all set to be completed on Sunday night at 8:00 PM.

o Please refer to your course’s Cognitive Tutor Pacing Guide 2013 - 2014 for specific information on weekly deadlines.

o Please note that deadlines are strictly enforced.

o Deadlines for the entire school year will be provided the first week of school. If you have any personal activities that will interfere with your weekly deadline, complete it ahead.

• Technical Difficulties

o The only technical support a teacher is able to offer is to re-start a student’s current problem if it becomes unresponsive. An e-mail must be sent to the teacher to document the problem before Sunday, 8:00 PM. If the teacher is not informed of the problem by then, the student will not be excused from completing that week’s deadline.

o For any other need of technical support, parents and/or students must contact Carnegie Learning’s Customer Support personnel:

Hours (EST): 7 days a week, 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM

• Phone (Toll Free): 888.851.7094 Option 3

• Fax: 412.690.2444

• Email: help@

• Please remember:

o The students must read the accompanying unit lesson AND complete the step-by-step example before beginning to work on the problems for each section(s) in a unit.

o It is of utmost importance that students take notes as they work, especially when having trouble with a specific topic or skill.

o Each unit has interactive examples that must be referred to when facing difficulties with any particular topic or skill. Any mistakes made while using the example will not affect the student’s Skillometer bars.

o It is recommended to have a copy of the Cognitive Tutor Pacing Guide 2012-13, and a notebook or journal for note taking, at all times in the home’s computer area.

Carnegie Learning’s Cognitive Tutor Orientation

I have been explained the requirements, expectations, and responsibilities for the completion of Carnegie Learning’s Cognitive Tutor’s Weekly Deadline. I understand the following:

• I will be graded weekly on the completion of the deadline.

• There are only two grades I can earn: an A for completing the deadline, or an F for incomplete, or partial completion, of the deadline.

• Partial credit will not be given for any incomplete deadline (grade of F).

• If experiencing technical difficulties I am responsible to contact Carnegie Learning, not my teacher.

• If I have any personal activities that will interfere with my weekly deadline, I must complete the required units ahead of time.

• My teacher can only help me if an exercise becomes unresponsive by restarting the problem.

• If an exercise becomes unresponsive, I must contact my teacher before Sunday, 8:00 PM, via e-mail. If I don’t contact my teacher, I will not be excused from completing that week’s deadline.

• I will be given time to work on my project in class, but I am not guaranteed to use the classroom’s computer for this purpose during every time we meet. I must plan to complete my project at home.

NOTE FOR PARENTS:

It is my goal that all my students will be successful in Geometry. I will assist your child in any way that I can. However, I, alone, cannot assure success. Please encourage your child daily in assuming responsibility for his/her own learning. Urge your child to study every day, this will help your child tremendously in their comprehension of each concept. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. Please contact me at any time concerning your child’s performance in my class. I can be reached at Doral Academy Charter School by phone at 305-597-9950 or via email 942749@. I look forward to working with you and your child this year.

Sincerely,

Ms. Rousso
