Prerequisites: None

Course Description:

Our first year of math will be a unique experience. We will spend the year developing your problem solving skills by learning how to solve problems which integrate the multiple branches of mathematics, including: algebra, geometry, trigonometry and discrete mathematics.

Course Goals:

In addition to meeting the state and citywide goals and objectives, we will work to achieve the following:

• Enlarge your math vocabulary

• Improve your ability to communicate mathematically

• Foster clear thinking

• Increase your problem solving ability

• Develop your skills and conceptual understanding of algebra

• Build your confidence and ability to succeed in algebra

|Course Materials |

|3 Ring Binder (1 inch or larger) |Pencils |

|Graph Paper (free - online) |Pen (for grading) |

|Ruler | |

|Loose Leaf Paper | |

|Calculator (see below) | |

Calculator:

I suggest the purchase of a TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculator. If you already have a graphing calculator it should suffice, so do not make the additional purchase. However, you may want to bring your calculator’s manual to class. TI-84 Plus graphing calculators will be available for students to use during class, lunch periods, and after school.

Grading:

The grades for each trimester in this class will be based on the following items:

|Homework /Projects |35% |

|Homework calendars will be given for each chapter | |

|Quizzes |20% |

|Tests |35% |

|In-Class Participation |10% |

|Attendance/Tardiness | |

|Participation in class discussions and activities | |

|Preparation for class (i.e. textbook, pencil, paper) | |

|Classroom discipline | |

Your final grade will be computed with the following weights: 30% for Trimester 1, 30% for Trimester 2, 30% for Trimester 3, and 10% for the Final Exam.

Homework Guidelines:

1. Homework should be completed on loose leaf notebook paper in pencil.

2. Each assignment should be labeled with your name, date, class period, and homework assignment.

3. Homework should be completed outside of class and corrected in class with a colored pen during our daily review.

4. All assignments are to be kept in your binder. Additional handouts such as worksheets and homework calendars should also be kept in your binder.

5. Late Homework Policy: If you miss a homework assignment and would like to receive late credit (half credit), then you must first complete and turn in an Assignment Incompletion Form the day the assignment is due. You can then make up the missing assignment and turn it in for half credit the next class meeting. POW’s are not eligible to be completed under the late homework policy.

Grading Scale:

A 100 – 90%

B 89 – 80%

C 79 – 70%

D 69 – 60%

F 59% and below

Make – Up Work:

Students who miss class(es) with a valid excuse are responsible for arranging dates and times for make-up work. Students who fall into this situation must complete all missed work by the next class meeting. Work missed due to cuts or unexcused absences may not be made up. See me the day you return to school, so that you may establish what you missed during class, turn in homework, etc… You will also want to visit my website for any other information you may have missed.

Math Binder:

Please keep a GREEN binder labeled and organized in the following manner:

Front Pocket: Homework that is Due Back Pocket: Homework to be Completed

Course Description and Homework Calendar placed in front of tabs

Tab 1: Classwork

Tab 2: Homework

Tab 3: POW’s

Tab 4: Tests/Quizzes

Tab 5: Blank paper/Graph paper

Keep your papers ordered chronologically within each section. This binder will be graded periodically, so you must keep it organized and updated.

Study Habits:

All students are expected to be successful in this math class through time dedicated to studying. Students are expected to review material with or without formal assignments being issued.

Be respectful of the following:

1. Be prompt for class. Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. Tardiness

will be handled as specified by the school procedures outlined in the school

handbook.

2. Dress appropriately for school and the weather. The guidelines issued in your student

handbook will be observed.

3. Exhibit mature behavior and treat all persons in the classroom with respect and

courtesy. We all get respect by showing respect.

Advice:

Be aware, be flexible, come to class, do your homework, and ask questions.
