Hand-building techniques, include coiling, slab building, and use of molds will be practiced. Wheel throwing steps highlight strategies with centering, opening, and lifting the clay. Students create simple functional pottery on the wheel and hand-built projects which they will glaze. Along with creating, students learn about clay, glaze, loading and firing of the kiln, and hit on some history of this ancient art form. By the conclusion of this seminar, the students will have a greater understanding of how to perform advanced rhythms, and will be ready to show off their abilities in their music classes at school.The Art of Decorating Cloth through BatikTaught by: Emily QuesenberryGrade Level: Middle / High - Rising Grades 7-12Participants in this seminar will get the chance to work with Batik, a wonderfully creative medium that consists of wax and dye, and will create 3-4 projects. To create batik, selected areas of cloth are blocked out by brushing or drawing hot wax over them and then dyeing the cloth. The wax acts as a barrier to the cloth beneath it and will stay the color under the wax. The process of layering wax and dye can be repeated to create more elaborate and colorful designs. “Financial Skills – Getting a Head Start”Taught by: C. J. If time allows, they will also learn how to attach a button and make a pocket pillow for their quilt.
