NC Math 1 Syllabus

Mrs. Mia Cruise (S103A)

mia.ferrisscruise@ (919) 560-3926 ext 23495

Course Description: NC Math I will introduce students to the important topics of high school mathematics, such as Statistic, Geometry, and Functions focusing on Linear, Exponential, and Quadratic. We will work in collaborative groups and investigate how mathematics plays a crucial role in the world around us. We will learn to formulate relevant questions, then seek out the mathematics required to answer those questions. We will learn to solve problems relevant to the 21st century world.

Class Website: mathatdsa.

Find your teacher and click NC Math 1. This will direct you to the Math 1 class webpage. The website contains daily assignments, contact information, tutoring schedules, and other important information. Mark this website as a “favorite” on your computer and be sure to visit on a regular basis.

Remind:

This is a way for students and parents to receive text message reminders about long term assignments, quizzes, test, and projects. To enroll text the following class code to the number given. You should then be prompted to send in your name.

Number: 81010

Class Code: @dsaccm1

6 Materials:

|3 Ring Binder |Pencils |Time Tracker |

|Pen (non blue/black) |Notebook Paper |Graphing Calculator (TI-83/84) |

|4 AAA Batteries (for your calculator) | |

Graphing Calculator:

Each student needs to have a TI-83+, or TI-84+ graphing calculator. The TI-graphing calculator is used throughout the entire year to investigate mathematical concepts. Many homework problems require the use of a graphing calculator. See the class website for online options for a graphing calculator simulator.

NC Math 1 Tutoring Schedule:

We offer five opportunities every week where your child can receive extra help. ALL Math 1 students are invited to attend ALL tutoring sessions with different Math 1 teachers.

Grading:

|Tests |60% |Quizzes will be given at the end of each unit. |

|Mini Quizzes |20% |Mini-Quizzes will be given as a way to check for mastery of a small set of standards. Progress checks will be |

Quizzes and Projects will be graded on the rubric for accuracy, and then converted to a grade out of 100.

Re-Quiz Policy:

We believe it is important for students to be prepared for their assessments, but we understand that sometimes students may need more time to reflect on a concept to fully understand it. In order accommodate this we have a re-quiz procedure. For students to improve their grade on a quiz they must attend at least 1 tutoring session and complete a re-quiz form. Once the re-quiz form is complete students will come in to take a re-quiz for up to ½ points back on any corrected question. Students have 5 school days from when the quizzes are returned to schedule the re-take, and no more than 7 days to complete the entire process.

Late Work Policy:

Classwork will be graded on completeness, so it is important that students are engaged and participate each day. Unexcused late work is not accepted for completeness credit.

Reflections:

Weekly, students will be asked to reflect on a key concept we are working on that week. Questions will be assigned Monday and will be due Friday before students leave school. These reflections give the teachers and students insight on what topics are understood and what misconceptions may need to be addressed further.

Group Work:

The Math Department at DSA places a value on the importance and necessity of working collaboratively. Therefore, we will be working in cooperative groups on a daily basis. The following is a list of some ideals:

• Communicating mathematical ideas to other members of the group

• Making mistakes and learning from them together

• Taking time to ensure that all group members understand

• Pushing the group to think deeply about the mathematics under investigation

• Reporting the group’s progress to the whole class in a complete and interesting way

Class Expectations:

• Be respectful to everyone and everything

• Be in your seat, prepared to begin class when the bell rings. .

• Abide by all policies in the student handbook including the academic honor code

• Make mistakes, and learn from them.

• When absent, check the assignment binder and tray to find out what work you missed.

• Do your best, and be kind to one another!

Class Procedures:

• Snacks are not allowed during class time.

• Students will be given 4 bathroom passes per quarter. It’s important that students are in my class. Use these bathroom passes for emergencies.

• Leaving the classroom for any other reason requires permission from Mrs. Cruise. Just ask!

Notebooks:

Students will be required to keep a math notebook and follow the guidelines listed below.

• Mistakes are an important part of learning. Use a pencil, so it’s easier to fix those mistakes!

• Students will organize their binder by unit.

• Assignment numbers should be written at the top of each assignment.

Absences/Tardiness:

Students should make every effort to be in attendance every day. However, we all know that sickness and other events cause students to miss school. If a student is absent, they have five (5) days to make-up work they missed. (Note: Assignments that were assigned when the student is present are expected to be completed and turned in when the student returns.) A record of all assignments is located in a notebook in the classroom and on the class website. Any handouts needed for an assignment are located in the trays in the back of the room. It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to check the notebook and trays when they return. If students are absent on the day of a quiz or test, it is the STUDENT’S responsibility to schedule a time to complete the quiz or test. Students should immediately check with Mrs. Cruise if they have any questions about an assignment.
