Hero’s Journey Movie Essay

As we’ve seen over the past few weeks, the hero’s journey is all around us. Based on the principles discussed in class, this is your opportunity to apply that knowledge to an outside source of your choice and then share that analysis with your classmates.

Assignment:

1) Select a film from the suggested list or have a film approved by me to use for the project.

2) Complete the Hero’s Journey Viewing Guide.

3) Complete the Hero’s Journey Chart based on your film.

4) Be prepared to discuss your viewing guide and chart in class on Monday, April 20th

5) Complete the following essay:

Hero’s Journey Analysis – Using your viewing guide and chart complete an essay that details the components of the hero’s journey as evidenced in your film choice. Your essay should incorporate all elements of the chart and must provide specific references that express your knowledge of the film. This is not a plot summary. You are not retelling the story, but selecting examples to support your analysis. Your essay should be typed, double-spaced in Times New Roman, 12-font. It is expected that your essay should be approximately three pages in length.

Essays are due on Monday, April 20th

Suggested Films

The idea is to think for unorthodox choices for the Hero’s Journey. Therefore, you may NOT use any of the following films: The Matrix, Star Wars series, Lord of the Rings series, Harry Potter series, Star Trek series, Superman, Spiderman, or Batman.

Note: Please be aware that these are suggested films based on the hero’s journey and the rating of the film should be agreed upon by both you and your parents. Do not select a film with a rating that is inappropriate or unacceptable.
