Principal's Report

Last week, 3HC also produced some fabulous examples of `contraction surgery'.

Dear Parents,

Last Friday, around two million students from 4575 Australian schools stood united to send a powerful message that bullying and violence are never okay. We joined the 2018 National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence by sharing stories of how important it is to stand up against people who try to have power over us and who behave in bullying ways. Here, the children from 3JJ have shared their `BIG IDEAS about a world free from bullying. We continue to encourage our students to speak out about bullying with their teachers and school leaders so the issues can be addressed.

Playground Improvement Project

On one of the recent stunning Saturdays that we have had, a group of dedicated parents and children worked to place the beautiful spotted gum stumps that had been decorated by 3JG last year, with the help of Cara McCauley, Mari Simpson and Charlene Jolley. So a huge thankyou to this dedicated team who worked so hard to improve the look of the garden beds around the trees in the Eastern Playground and increase the opportunities for creative play for the students - Keiva Baker, Bruce Baker, Jani Pride, Graham Johnson, Jo Pepper, Bec Halakas, Nigel Baker and all of the children who accompanied them to assist. Thank you!

PSSA and School Sport

Last Friday was the last week of Summer PSSA Sport until it resumes in Term 4. I must pass on my thanks to all the coaches for the additional time and effort they put into coaching and leading our PSSA teams. There is also 1 more week of school sport this Friday and thanks to Nicola Elliott and Jo Moore, the students have had many varied opportunities for school sports also. Much preparation is in place for Term 2, including sourcing school sport options, organising risk assessments and Working with Children Check requirements. Our students are very fortunate to have so many opportunities from which to choose.

P & C Meeting

Tonight we have our P & C Meeting at 7pm in the library. Many thanks to Todd Woods who has nominated for P & C Secretary for 2018 and we look forward to ratifying this on Tuesday evening.

Zone Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to our fantastic swimmers who swam well at the Zone Carnival and demonstrated great school spirit and sportsmanship throughout the day. As you would have seen in the email last week, Newport finished 2nd overall and also won the Vicky Kingsnorth Handicap score. 13 students are off to the Sydney Nth Regional Carnival and we wish you all the best. Many thanks to Greg Moran, Jamie Blazejewski and Ingrid Mailler for supporting Newport's team.

School Photos

School Photo day is Thursday 3 May and you can now order photos online. All the information needed has been included in this week's Natter. Paper envelopes will be distributed closer to the photo day, but it would be preferred if all orders can be

made online. We have a surprise staff photo lined up too, to celebrate our 130 year anniversary!

Natter Tell Them From Me Student and Parent Survey Information

Again this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students participated in Tell Them From Me student surveys in 2017. Asking students to complete the survey each year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year and we have used the results to help improve how we do things at school. More information about the survey is available below:

The survey is confidential, is conducted online and will take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 26 March and 13 April and participating in the survey is voluntary.

A form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey will go home with students in years 3-6. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to the school office by Friday 23 March. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from:

Mini Commonwealth Games-a-thon

One of our fun, fundraisers this year will be the `Mini Commonwealth Games-a-thon,' on Wednesday 4 April. Dressing in allocated country colours, students and teachers will convene at Newport Oval for a fun filled day of physical activity and lots of laughs, as we replicate some of the Commonwealth Games sporting events in an effort to raise money for our school. There are amazing prizes on offer, for those who raise the most money, as well as a bonus prize and a special class lunch for the first class to have everyone in their class raise money and return their donations to school. Please encourage your child to gather sponsors from family, relatives and family friends and we look forward to a wonderful event. Money needs to be returned to the School Office by Friday May 4.

Easter Parade

This year's Easter Parade for students in years K-2 will be held on Thursday 29 March in the morning as opposed to our traditional afternoon parade. We will also be holding a breakfast BBQ from 7-9am as a fundraiser for our 130 Year celebrations. We hope you can join us for a wonderful morning.

Interrelate

Has your child started asking questions about the facts of life? On Wednesday 4 April, Interrelate will be presenting 2 evening programs designed for families to attend together. Session 1, "Where did I come from?" is aimed at students in years 3 and 4 and session 2, "Preparing for Puberty" is aimed at students in Years 5 and 6. One session is $30 per family and 2 sessions is $35 per family.

Garden Produce

It was great on Friday to have students from PSSA pick the produce from our wonderful garden and sell these to staff for their weekend "cook ups." The money raised will go back into buying seedlings for the next round of planting.

130 Years Celebrations

The 130 years email account has been running hot with messages from past students who are looking forward to joining us to celebrate on 25 October. Here is one of our messages:

For more information on how you can be involved, please contact Trina Leslie newportps130@.

Payments must be made prior to the evening, through the form attached below.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher interviews will be held during the week of Monday 9 April through to Friday 13 April. Generally, interviews for grades will be held on the following days;

Monday- Yrs 3 and Yr 6, Tuesday ? Yr 4 and Kindergarten, Wednesday ? Yr 5 and Yr 1 and Thursday ? Yr 2. Bookings will be done through School Interviews and details will follow closer to the time.

Date Change University of NSW Writing Competition

The UNSW Writing Competition will be held on Wednesday 13 June at 8am, not Thursday 14 June as our Athletics Carnival is being held on this day.

Harmony Day

Tomorrow we will celebrate Harmony Day. The students have learnt about Harmony Day through assembly and have completed some class activities to support their understanding. Many thanks to Sharon Smithies for facilitating Harmony Day at Newport. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. The staff will be wearing orange on Wednesday to show our support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

I am looking forward to hearing the news from Year 5 camp and how our Chess gurus went in the competition yesterday at Mona Vale. Chess is a wonderful skill to foster and last week at social chess there weren't enough boards for players which was fabulous to see. Keep it up Newport!

School Parliament

Every Thursday the leadership team has a look at all the great suggestions from students to see if they can be carried or mentioned in Parliament. Some good ideas from last week that have been carried include having more varieties of food in the canteen (our student Well-Being Ministers have surveyed students to see their preferences), another crazy hair-day and a school disco, which will be carried to our Charity and Fundraising Ministers. Another suggestion which has come to our attention has been to support the Good Samaritan Christmas Box to help people in need. Unfortunately, there are some suggestions that will not be carried as they either do not make sense, are not needed or cost too much money such as to build a school swimming pool, sponsor a tiger and install school lockers like those in high schools. Thank you for all your fantastic suggestions Newport! Please make sure your ideas make sense and you include why you would like your suggestion to be carried or why it is a good idea for the whole school. By Year 6 Ministers

School Parliament Report

The Welcome Back BBQ took place at Newport Public School on a Friday evening and was a huge success! We raised over $3000 and we would like to thank everyone for making the night go so smoothly. A special mention must go to the parent committee for helping us run the Welcome Back BBQ, to all the students who made the posters to raise awareness and to everyone who came along on the night to celebrate with us and support our school. The Parliament Ministers meet every Thursday at lunchtime and in these first few weeks, we have been learning to run our lunchtime meetings, how to plan what has to get done and what each job means, decide on who is going to do them and what the deadline is and how to take minutes. The students across the school have come up with some fantastic suggestions already and we will be voting on these at our first Parliament meeting on Tuesday 9 March. By Alexandra Murray

Kind regards, Natalie Baldi

Music

'Mr Roc' and 'Miss Chelsea' have some vacancies for any students who would like to do the piano keyboard lessons held, before school, in the music room.

Keyboards are supplied for the lessons and the course is a great introduction to music for young students before they join the school bands as well as inspiring music for older, more advanced piano students. (See attached flyer for more information and enrolment).

Both Rock and Chelsea can also help train students who would like to join the school bands on a keyboard or a tuned percussion instrument - xylophone etc

There are a couple of vacancies in each band for students wishing to play those instruments.
