Lookout Mountain 2017 Summer Reading : Rising 4th Graders Record additional titles you read just for fun this summer on this reading log. Go on to the back if you read more!Title of Book Author RatingParent Signature___________________________________Date_____________Lookout Mountain School Rising 4th Graders Dear Students and Parents,Welcome to fourth grade! This is a going to be a terrific year. You will begin to do more independent reading in school. Every single day you will have silent reading time! Be sure to always have that special book with you! You will also have literature circles, where you read independently, than come together as a group to meet and discuss what you’ve read with each other. We also read a lot of books in social studies, and you will be read to every single day! (Maybe twice!)THIS SUMMER, you need to read. Everyone likes different types of books and has different reading abilities. SO, you may choose the books you wish to read this summer. Parents, of course, please monitor their choices. Too hard books are discouraging. Too easy are ok sometimes, just for fun. (I love Shel Silverstein) Rereading old favorites is ok! Nonfiction provides a myriad of subjects for them to explore. Many love fantasy books! So. being that there is not a “required” book per say…please keep track of the books you read this summer. Included is a sheet for you to write down the title and author. Just fill it out when you finish a book. When school starts, we will transfer this list into a notebook which you will continue to use during the year. Bring the list with you on the first day of school.READING ALOUD is SO encouraged. Students need to hear fluent reading while just listening. This quality time is given to you for such a short time…as children grow so quickly. Pick the best books and curl up and read, today. A nice mix of read aloud and independent reading is perfect.MATH: This is pretty simple: Learn you math multiplication facts by heart. Knowing them will make 4th grade math easier and more enjoyable for you. I can’t tell you how much difference this makes! Dividing, double and triple digit multiplication, equivalent fractions, etc. all become mastered quickly when students don’t have to stop and struggle with facts. (Idea…put a set of flashcards in the car and practice them at red lights….)Have a wonderful summer!!!Your 4th Grade Teachers**All rising fourth graders will need to study and practice multiplication times tables. We will begin timed practice test that include times tables from 0 to 9 at the beginning of the school year. Students will need to score a 100 or on this test by the beginning of October. On Oct. 5th we will have a test to show your mastery. Make it fun! Use flashcards, internet games, iPad games, and more!!
