Safe and Drug Free Schools

Funding

• 15 % decrease for 2008-09

• Approved annual waivers are required for programs not on the list of programs supported by science-based Research

Budget Requirements

• Budget narrative

• FS-10 budget by cost categories

• Administrative costs 2% cap

• Security cap 20% for hardware, 40 % for security staff. Hardware + security staff can not exceed 40% of total annual budget.

Ongoing requirement for all applications

All applications must include the circumstances surrounding any suspensions imposed under New York State Education Law section 3214(3)(d) with respect to fire arms including the name of the school, the number of students suspended and the type of firearm concerned.

**New requirement** for all applications

The Typology Table on p. 72 must be completed and included in the application. Provide numbers of students receiving each type of activity by elementary, middle and high school grade levels.

The newly required Typology Table is listed as #45 on page 22 of the assurances that must be signed off on for Title IV, Part A.

Please note

For applications with no substantial changes from the previous year where there is no approved waiver check the continuation box.

For applications with no substantial changes from the previous year where there is an approved waiver check the continuation box, check the waiver box and submit a new waiver request which includes evaluation data for the previous years approved waiver.

For applications with substantial changes from the previous year include a program narrative that addresses the following:

• Performance Measures

• Activities and programs

• Assessment of need-analysis of risk and protective factors

• Periodic evaluation used to refine program

• Coordination with other strategies, programs and activities

• Parent and community involvement

Authorized Activities include the following:

• Drug and violence prevention programs that are developmentally appropriate, skill-based, learner centered and effective.

• Parent and community-wide involvement

• Professional development related to drug and violence prevention (teachers, administrators and other staff)

• Expanded and improved mental health services provided by qualified staff (certified mental health professionals)

• Conflict resolution, peer mediation and character education programs

• Programs for students who are truant or suspended

• Community service projects

• Alternative education programs

• Counseling, mentoring and student assistance programs

• School safety and security
