TP-CASTT Poems Due October 12/13

TP-CASTT Poems Due October 13/14

Be sure you have a TPCASTT complete for all poems assigned in class and complete the following: (This IS for a TEST GRADE!) All will be stapled together and submitted.

The poems are as follows (links for all can be found on my website):

“There Will Come Soft Rains,” “Because I Could Not Stop for Death,” “Death Be Not Proud,” “To an Athlete Dying Young,” “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day,” “My Mistress’ Eyes are Nothing Like the Sun,” , “Let Me not to the Marriage of Minds”

1. For what do each of the letters in the acronym TPCASTT stand?

2. How should you approach paraphrasing a poem? How is it different from summarizing?

3. Find three examples of literary elements and identify the poem(s) from which you derived them. Identify the element and indicate how the element added to the poem overall.

Ex. The author uses the anaphora “I begin” at the start of all lines. This is used to show the persistence of the speaker.

The author uses the alliterative letter b throughout the entire poem. This echoes the sounds of war.

4. List three tone words which would be more specific than the word sad and indicate under what circumstances the word you listed would be more appropriate.

5. Write a possible THEME for each of the following topics: (These may or may not be themes from the poems we discussed.) Friendship, Love, Death

6. Write an alternate title for two or the poems we read. Indicate why your alternate title would also be appropriate.

7. Write a one-page essay for one of the poems in which you discuss how the choice of detail, diction, and syntax (connotation) are used to reveal the speaker’s attitude to the subject and how those elements contribute to the overall theme.

Grading: 50 percent for having all seven poems with the correct focus

5 points each for each question 1-6

20 points for the one-page essay
