MAIN TEACHING AND LEARNING

Activity 1

The teacher tells the class that they are going to learn a new word ‘proud’ and when and how they might use it when they talk about their friends or their

family. They are also going to learn that they can use the word about themselves. Another word they will learn is ‘jealous’. Teacher to elicit whether

children know/have heard of these words and when they might use them. Talk about Cinderella and ugly sisters.

Use the photocards ‘proud’ and ‘jealous’ from the whole-school resource file to explore the feelings, using the questions on the back of the cards as a

framework (powerpoint available ‘jealous/proud in resource section). In small groups discuss 1 of the photo cards and decide which of the words could be used

and why. Groups report back to rest of class. Does everyone agree?

Activity 2

Ask children to think of themselves. What are they proud of that they can do? In the circle each child can choose to say ‘I am proud of myself because…….’

Now think of a friend or someone in their family. What might you be proud of them for? Teacher to give some examples. What are they proud of? What could

they say? ‘I am proud of…… because…..’ Ask for some examples.

Sometimes we are not proud. Sometimes we might feel ‘jealous’ What might we be jealous of? Give an example – jealous of how much time mum spends with new

baby, no time for you.

£££ Talk about how seeing others with more than we have can make us feel jealous

How do we feel? How might we behave? What might we do/say?

Using strip of paper and counter for each pair, teacher reads out scenarios on p7 and each pair decide whether they would feel proud or jealous. Each pair to

check with another pair. What might you say to these people? How do you feel? Teacher to elicit.
