Introduction:

(Introduction adapted from live video interview by Generosity Press Founder, Paul Akers.) Well hello everyone, Paul Akers here, and welcome to one the most exciting projects I've ever done. It's called Generosity Press and we're launching it by republishing one of the most important books in business history, Today and Tomorrow, by Henry Ford. I'm sitting here today with Phil Morgan. He's 88 years old and one of the few people still alive who actually knew Henry Ford. Phil was an orphan in 1944 and was chosen to attend the renowned Henry Ford's School for Boys in Massachusetts. It was a school that Ford himself funded and created to educate, reinvigorate, and completely transform the lives of what we now call, "at risk youth." The automotive genius, business innovator, and icon of the industrial age proved to also be an incredibly generous person as well. One of his greatest successes was how he invested in people. Ford provided the tools to improve their lives by giving them the skills, knowledge, and opportunity to build their own future and live beyond their perceived potential. Generosity Press is actually inspired by people like Henry Ford for his ingenuity as well as his generosity. Ford's classic book, Today and Tomorrow, was originally published in 1926, obviously long before this digital age of eBooks, digital audio-books, and hi-def video, all now available in the palm of our hand. So, we wanted to make this book available and tell his story in all of these formats for the very first time. If you're like me and lack the time, or maybe the attention span and patience needed to flip through the paper pages, now you have other options. Or, if you just love the convenience and the thought of listening to the book as if Ford is sitting right there telling you the story himself, we made that dream a virtual reality for you too with an absolutely stunning audio-book of this as well. So I thought to myself, wouldn't it be cool if we started reproducing and recording all kinds of historic and classic business books with today's technology, and made a way for everyone to have access. That concept became the catalyst behind Generosity Press. You might say, why

Generosity Press? Well really, it's our opportunity to sit on the shoulders of men like Henry Ford, a very generous man. He had a profound and positive effect, not just on technology and industry, but also on all society by empowering people, just like the guest we're about to hear from, allowing them to set a new course and trajectory for their whole life. That of course, had a domino effect that grew through their families, then flowed through their communities, then grew momentum through the local, regional and eventually the world economy. That's the kind of impact we too dream of making! So with that, welcome to the first book reproduced by Generosity Press.

Now this particular book, Today and Tomorrow, by Henry Ford, is very fascinating because this is a book that influenced lean manufacturing genius and Toyota Production System inventor, Taiichi Ohno. Ohno talks about this book as having a profound impact on how he developed the Toyota production system. So being that I'm a big lean maniac, it absolutely makes sense that I too would want to read this groundbreaking book by Ford. And the backdrop where I'm sitting right now is also absolutely amazing!

Look how beautiful this is ? the book was originally published in 1926, and right behind me is a beautiful hunter green 1926 Model T Ford. Right next to that, we have an all original classic black 1924 Model T with its original paint job untouched. You can still see the brush strokes in the few places on this vehicle where they actually hand painted this classic in the Ford factory nearly a century ago.

Now if you're reading this and dying to see the video of this for yourself, just go to my website, and look under the "Books" tab. From there you can find all kinds of additional resources for this book and all the others that we will continue to produce and make available.

This particular interview is also on YouTube. You can simply click the link here with on your eBook or scan the QR code below that will take you directly to it at:

I'd also like to thank my friend, Mike Yeakel, who is also in business here in Bellingham, Washington. He has this wonderful car collection and he also owns an injection molding company, Myco Molding. He actually did a lot of molding for my company, FastCap. Mike made his amazing car collection generously available to us as a backdrop to shoot this interview today to help kick off Generosity Press.

And that's what generosity is all about. You know, as a business owner working with people all over the world, all the successful business owners that I know and work with are also incredibly generous in the same spirit of Henry Ford. It's wonderful to give back, and I want to thank all the business owners that I've been associated with around the world who are constantly giving back to society to make their communities better. That's why we named it Generosity Press ? going along and supporting that idea of how important it is for all of us to be generous and give back to our communities and our society to make the world a better place as Henry Ford gave a great example of.

Now to hear more about Henry Ford, and this amazing story from someone who actually had the opportunity to attend Ford's own school, got to meet Ford in person, and the impact that Ford's generosity had on his life... welcome Phil Morgan.

Phil: Well thank you Paul.

Paul: Thank you for doing this! Tell us how it all started.

Phil: I was an orphan as a kid and taken from a home that was very squalid. I was taken by child welfare of Massachusetts and was placed in many foster homes where it would be very much like Oliver Twist taking a walk in the park. I mean it was pretty interesting but there was not really much of a future for me. I was going to public school and then the child welfare department heard of Henry Ford's Boys School. Henry was actually looking for boys to work with supervisors in his automotive plant. The school was called Wayside Inn Boys School (alternatively, Henry Ford's Boys School) in Massachusetts.

Phil holds up the book that catalogues the daily experiences at the boarding school while he attended.

Phil: And here's a book, Henry Ford's Boys: The Story of the Wayside Inn Boys School though it's not in audio form. (Phil says satirically as he laughs.)

Paul: Oh. It will be soon! (Paul says with a sly smile and chuckle.)

Phil: This is a book that tells about Wayside - Henry Ford's best kept secret. There were all sorts of boys from various parts of society. Most of them from troubled backgrounds ? orphans or foster kids.

Paul: How fantastic. I love to hear that story that it wasn't a government program but it was Ford, a businessman, who actually responded.

Phil: A very generous person.

Paul: Yes, a very generous person. You know what else, Phil, I thought about when you were telling this story earlier, wow, Henry Ford got waste. He saw your life and the path that it was on as an orphan and ward of the state, how it was basically in jeopardy of being wasted yet he took your circumstances and turned it into something great because you became a top electrical engineer for the Mobil Oil Company. Wow, what an impact Ford had on your life.

Phil: I'm not the only one. Many other boys have had very successful careers and lives.

Paul: Yes, you were telling me earlier how most of the boys who went through this program became very, very successful. All different kinds of trades. Name some of the kinds professions that they had.

Phil: For instance, like the military ? colonels in the Army and he took some of the boys into his Ford plants.
