Here are the Rise and Shine news headlines for Wednesday 2nd Sept 2009.

No Concert - VO

Scores of persons who had purchased tickets were sorely disappointed as the highly anticipated gospel concert featuring Donnie Mc Clurkin advertised to be held on Independence Night did not take place. For over a month advertisements were aired by several media houses proclaiming the arrival of the famous gospel artiste Donnie McClurkin and movie star Tyler Perry who is known for such hit movies like Diary of a Mad Black Woman and the Madea series. Last Friday local pastor, Terrence Baynes informed the public that they were being duped since he had discovered that concert advertisements were just an attempt by the promoters to fraudulently receive money from the public. Sources reveal that the matter has since been brought to the attention of the police who are currently conducting investigations into the matter.

Office Closed Update - Pkg

Gross disrespect and a breach of the Civil Service Act is how Industrial Relations Officer of the Public Services Association Tobago views the actions of the Permanent Secretary of the Central Administrative Services Tobago. Joanne Bourne - Sheppard was voicing her displeasure at the way in which representatives of the PSA were being disregarded by the Permanent Secretary, Terrence Henry in their attempt to meet with him to discuss the plight of the workers of the Registrar General’s Office.

She stated that Mr. Henry’s actions are not in accordance with the Civil Service Act number 230 part 3 section 16, which she said, clearly recognizes the Public Services Association as the Union which represents monthly paid public officers in Trinidad and Tobago. The Industrial Relations Officer explained that she has made numerous attempts to meet with the permanent secretary for discussions to come to an amicable solution. But she lamented that all attempts have failed. She continued that because of the Permanent Secretary’s refusal to meet with the Union, they have had no choice but to act in accordance with the grievance procedure as outlined in the Civil Service Amendment Act Regulation 2001chapter 11, section 1.34 and refer the matter to the Chief Personnel Officer.

CMOH Update -VO

Tobago now has a temporary County Medical Officer of Health. Dr. Murchison Melville took up office on the 6th of August and will be in Tobago until the 6th of September. It is still unsure about who will take his place after he returns to Trinidad. Dr. Melville occupied office just three days after the Chief Secretary announced that advertisements were placed for a new CMOH. He is filling the position for Dr. Mentor Melville who retired from the position that he held for the past 12 years. Dr. Mentor Melville is now employed with the Tobago Regional Health Authority as a Medical Officer I. Other sources have indicated that Dr. Melville’s retirement was prompted by political reasons. Tobago had been without a County Medical Officer of Health which affected a number of persons and put their business on hold as approval is needed from that senior officer.

No D-String Team - Pkg

Interim West Indies Cricket head coach David Williams is dismissing claims that the current squad is a D string side and is expressing confidence that his side could spring a surprise in the Upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Coach Williams was responding to the many criticisms about the performance level of the team for the tournament after they suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Bangladesh in their last Digicel Home Series. While he admitted the team played poorly against that side as they lacked the experience, he believes that the team still possessed the tenacity to perform well. He said, “At the end of the day, whoever goes out there to play is representing the West Indies and is a West Indies team.”

The tournament which begins from September 22 will see the Floyd Reifer led team being among the top rated teams in the World, in group A which includes World Champions Australia, World Twenty20 Champs Pakistan and India.
