Early Head Start Center-Based Teacher

Job Summary

Duties include planning an appropriate infant/toddler learning environment and coordinating and executing a program of responsive care and learning for four (4) infants and/or toddlers, including those with special needs. Over the course of the children’s enrollment in Caddo Early Head Start. Included in the duties are ensuring family involvement in the planning and implementation of the each child’s learning and coordination with other staff to ensure appropriate, high quality serves for the children and their families.

Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. minimum; preferred Associate of Bachelor degree in early childhood education or willing to work toward degree.

2. At least 21 years of age.

3. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for Infant and Toddler Caregivers; or must obtain credential within one year of employment.

4. Preferred at least one year experience as a teacher in an early childhood program serving infants and toddlers (below 3 years of age) in a developmentally appropriate environment.

5. Knowledge of community resources and skills to link families and with appropriate resources.

6. Training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable and supportive relationships with very young children, their families, and pregnant women.

7. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

8. Sensitive and mature and able to relate well to children and adults.

9. Ability to lift infants and toddlers and participate in floor activities, to include frequent getting down and up form the floor; ability to lift 25 pounds including adaptive equipment which may be required by children with special needs.

10. Willing to work flexible hours and plan vacation times around EHS holiday.

11. Dependable transportation and a valid Louisiana Driver’s License and proof of insurance.

12. Ability and willingness to be trained to work with children with special needs and utilize special procedures or equipment necessary to meet the child’s needs in Early Head Start.

Requirements

1. Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge, understanding and adherence to philosophy, goals, objectives, policies, procedures and standards of the Caddo Early Head Start, Louisiana Child Care Licensing and other appropriate entities; demonstration of professional knowledge and skills to carry out activities

2. Plan and implement the program for center-based programs in accordance with the Head Start Standards.

3. Treat all children and adults with dignity and respect.

4. Embrace the role of the parent as the primary educator of the child and promote and support attachment between parent and child.

5. Assure the safety and well-being of all children while involved in Early Head Start activities.

6. Promote feelings of trust and security in infants and toddlers by being warm, supportive, comforting, and by establishing strong and caring relationships with them.

7. Gear the program to meet the needs of individual children with concerns for their interests, special needs, talents and individual style and pace of learning.

8. Assure that each infant and toddler is warmly greeted upon arrival; each infant is held and each child is gradually assisted to become part of the small group of four.

9. Talk, sing and read to children frequently during the entire day.

10. Respond quickly in a soothing and tender manner to cries or calls of distress.

11. Respond consistently to needs for food and comfort.

12. Implement individualized feeding plans; respect individual preferences and eating styles; sit with children and share family-style meal; model manners and good nutrition.

13. Tend to each child’s personal hygiene needs and remain attentive to them during routines such as diaper changing, cleaning, feeding and changing soiled or wet clothes.

14. Ensure safe and healthy learning environment by implementing all safety and health standards of Caddo EHS.

15. Organize each day’s activities to provide children with a variety of experiences and opportunities.

16. Conduct developmental screenings and ongoing assessments to determine motor, language, social, cognitive, sensory and emotional skills.

17. Conduct a quarterly parent-teacher conference, preferably in the home, to discuss the child’s report.

18. Complete timely, neat, complete and accurate documentation of screenings. Assessments, individualized plans, attendance, daily health checklist, feedings, daily activity logs for parents, home visits, inventories and other documentation as may be necessary for providing quality services.

19. Develop Family Partnerships agreements in cooperation with the Health and Social Services Content Area Coordinators, and follow through in addressing needs identified through Family Partnership Process.

20. Maintain a positive calm attitude and a pleasant, soothing voice at all times.

21. Adhere to all Caddo Early Head Start procedures, including those addressing discipline, child abuse/neglect and confidentiality.

22. Maintain a safe, clean care-giving environment in the classroom and in outside learning areas, including meeting standards of personal dress and hygiene.

23. Maintain organization of the classroom and cleaning of material, supplies, equipment and linens.

24. Keep Center Manager (or Head Start Supervisor) informed of materials and supplies on hand and the need for replenishing.

25. Teachers working with pregnant women will assist them to access comprehensive prenatal and post-natal care and provide them with education on fetal development, labor and delivery, post-partum recovery, and breast-feeding.

26. Teachers working with pregnant women must insure the staff LPN visits the home within two weeks of delivery.

27. Coordinate the program with activities of staff in other areas and in other community agencies.

28. Communicate effectively with others, including giving and receiving feedback.

29. Cooperate successfully as a member of the team.

30. Assist in developing all plans, policies and procedures for all content areas.

31. Participate in recruitment, selection and enrollment for Caddo EHS.

32. Review attendance records, monitor chronic attendance problems and implement corrective action.

33. Coordinate with disability experts to secure and provide individualized services for infants and toddlers with disabilities, including development of the Individualized Family Service Plan.

34. Ensure that all medications are stored and administered according to state policy and child care licensing regulations.

35. Coordinate with the nutrition consultant, parents and all on-site food service workers to ensure adequate nutrition.

36. Communicate with parents, health services coordinator, other health providers to ensure that screenings and other required services and necessary treatments are obtained.

37. Assist the Early Head Start Supervisor and other administrators in explaining the programs to visitors and in public awareness activities.

38. Participate in professional development, including meetings and conferences of professional organizations.

39. Willingness to work flexible hours to meet the needs of EHS children and families.

40. Willingness to be cross-trained to perform other appropriate tasks which may be required as an ESH team member.

41. Willingness to adhere to professional code of conduct which includes no elaborate jewelry at work, no long fingernails which present health and safety risks to children and no use of cell phones while in the classroom.

42. Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by designated supervisor.

Personal characteristics

1. Ability to plan and carry forth assignments with supervision and guidance.

2. Demonstrate desire and enthusiasm about working and caring for young children, including performance of hygiene and cleanliness tasks required in infant/toddler environments.

3. Ability to gain respect of staff, children, and families of Caddo EHS.

4. Demonstrate cultural competency and ability to work with diverse groups of individuals, to include persons with developmental disabilities.
