THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER

(ENGLISH ? FRENCH ? GERMAN - SPANISH)

STORY BACKGROUND

In Mark Twain's famous tale, the cave scenes come in late in the story. Becky, Tom, and their classmates go on a picnic along the shores of the Mississippi and afterwards it is decided to go explore the cave.

"Tom and Becky get separated from the others and wander lost in the extensive cave complex for the next few days. Becky gets extremely dehydrated and starved, so Tom's search for a way out gets even more desperate. He accidentally encounters Injun Joe in the caves one day, but he is not seen by his nemesis.

"Eventually, he finds a way out, and they are joyfully welcomed back by their community. As a preventive measure, Judge Thatcher, Becky's father, has McDougal's Cave sealed off with an iron door, but this traps Injun Joe inside. When Tom hears of the sealing several days later he directs a posse to the cave, they find

Injun Joe's corpse just inside the sealed entrance, starved to death.

"A week later, having deduced from Injun Joe's presence at McDougal's Cave that the villain must have hidden the stolen gold inside, Tom takes Huck to the cave and they find the box of gold, the proceeds of which are invested for them." (Anon. 2018)

Mark Twain (born Samuel L. Clemens) grew up in Hannibal, Missouri and was very acquainted with the labyrinthine passages of nearby McDougal's Cave. Now a show cave called Mark Twain Cave, it "was little known outside of the immediate Hannibal region until 1876, when Twain's landmark novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published." (Anon. 2019)

Mark TWAIN

For some reason, Tom Sawyer was especially popular in Germany, where twelve readings and audio books were released on LPs and CDs.

Several different recorded performances in English, French, and German were examined and found not to include the cave scenes, so these were not included here nor will they be mentioned in the section on Not Spoken Word recordings. Of course, many other readings of this classic have been recorded since 2005, especially n German, but you will have to find these for yourself.

This illustration by Norman Rockwell was included in the Heritage Press Illustrated Bookshelf edition.

EP: THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER RCA Victor (Bluebird Children's) WBY 13 7" 45rpm (Side 2) Notes: This is an extremely abridged version of the original text with musical bridges that does not followed the original plot lines and tends to change and shorten incidents to fit the allotted running time. However, this performance represents the first known recorded version of Tom Sawyer to include the cave scenes, rearranged to suit the adapter. Cave scenes start on sample at 6:30 ? Tom invited Becky along to the picnic. Becky: "Do you really think Indian Joe put the treasure in the cave." Twisting underground passageways. Tom: "I can't see the entrance to the cave anymore. Becky, We're lost!" Later Tom says: "Becky, we're (right here) with the treasure." Becky: "That's Wonderful. Now, let's go back." Tom and Becky wandered underground. They'd almost given up. When they made a turn in the passageway and then... Tom: "Oh, a light. There's the entrance; We're safe!"

The 7-inch 45rpm single was first introduced on the market by RCA Victor in 1949. (Anon. 2014) So this record, as you can see by the catalog number, was among those first issues; it probably dates to late 1949 in that other 45 releases in this catalog number range (RCA Victor Prefix 50 & especially Bluebird Prefix 30 & Prefix 31) have all been dated by Daniels to that precise period. (Daniels 1985) RCA continued to release the exact same recordings on 78rpm shellac discs, but since 45 singles cost more than a 78rpm single people tended to buy the 78 because they already had a record player that could play them. Notes: This LP is part 2 of a reading of Tom Sawyer by Ed Begley for Caedmon Records; the first part was released after this one on

Caedmon TC 1205 and it takes the story from the fence painting up to

the pirates coming back from the island to attend their funeral. This album is devoted just to the scenes in the book, which involve

Injun Joe, and only three bands on the second side concern the scenes in McDougal's Cave. These constitute exact readings of

excerpts from chapters 30 to 33 of the original classic.

Ed Begley was a well-known Hollywood actor of second roles in several westerns and also in "12 Angry Men," (1957) and "Sweet Bird of Youth" (1962). Here and there he will skip a sentence or two and even whole paragraphs, while occasionally changing a word (ex. "maze" for "labyrinth") without affecting the sense of the text in any way. The bridges between scenes are filled with harmonica or country music. Only the parts dealing with the cave were auditioned and timed. THE PICNIC/ MCDOUGAL'S CAVE ? The picnic scene and the description of McDougal's Cave is taken from the beginning of chapter 29, "Huck Saves the Widow." TOM AND BECKY ARE LOST ? This is from Chap. 31, "Found and Lost Again," but much dialogue and some passages are omitted.

AT CHURCH/ THE SEARCHERS ? Skips back to the end of chap. 30, "Tom and Becky in the Cave," and in the sentence about the "Cardiff Hill episode" the script adds "an' Injun Joe was forgotten." IN THE CAVE/ INJUN JOE RETURNS ? This is from the second half of chap. 31. THE CHILDREN ARE FOUND/ TOM AND HUCK EXPLORE THE CAVE/ THE TREASURE ? These three sections are from chapter 32, " `Turn Out! They're Found!,' " and most of chap. 33, "The Fate of Injun Joe." Regarding the cave in this tale, Mark Twain wrote in his autobiography (as quoted by Demetriou in the liner notes) ? "It was miles in extent and was a tangled wilderness of narrow and lofty clefts and passages. It was an easy place to get lost in; anybody could do it ? including the bats. I got lost in it myself, along with a lady, and our last candle burned down almost to nothing before we glimpsed the search party's lights winding in the distance." " `Injun Joe,' the half-breed, got lost in there once, and would have starved to death if the bats had run short. But there was no chance of that; there were myriads of them. In the book called `Tom Sawyer' I starved him entirely to death in the cave, but that was in the interest of art; it never happened." (Twain, ca. 1906) Bing Crosby also recorded "Clementine" in 1941 (see under Marginal Cave Music ? Clementine) and "Puff, The Magic Dragon" in 1968 (see under Marginal Cave Music ? Puff, The Magic Dragon ? 1963-1969). Ref: Bing Crosby, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer LP, Discogs Tom Sawyer (Bing Crosby album), Wikipedia Twain, Mark ca. 1906, Autobiography, Paine. Til 499 (stereo) 12" 33rpm (Sd 2) Notes: A dramatization of the story with Dixieland music and effects. In the middle of side 2 is the cave episode. The narrator says ? "It was the day of the Sunday school trip to the caverns." In the cave Becky calls out, "Here, Tom, there's a path over here." They find a huge cave of crystals and hundreds of bats, but "no exit in sight." Then there is an interlude scene where Huck follows Injun Joe to Widow Douglas' place and has to go for help. We return to Tom & Becky lost in the cave. There is only one candle left and a drop of water puts it out. Using a kite string Tom feels his way along. He spots Injun Joe and then a light in the distance. After they both exit the cave Tom covers the entrance hole with rocks. The entire cave episode plus the interlude with Huck lasts about 5 minutes. Later Tom tells about seeing Injun Joe in the cave, so they go back and open up the closed cave entrance to find Injun Joe dead. Then Tom & Huck return to dig up the chest with $12,000 of treasure.

Notes: Garrick Hagon wrote regarding this work by Mark Twain and

mentioned in regard to the section concerning Injun Joe in the cave ? "The

death of Injun Joe in the cave evokes Twain's meditation on life and time as

he reminds us in Shakespearean cadences, that the drop of water from the

stalagmite in the cave which failed to save Injun Joe, will still be falling when

all human endeavour will have `sunk down the afternoon of history, and the twilight of tradition, and been swallowed up in the thick night of oblivion.' This resonant prose is meant to be read aloud and one can imagine Twain delivering it from a lecture platform on one of his splendid reading tours."
