INTRODUCTION

Alex Knoll is a 14-year-old inventor & the founder of Ability App. The app was created to promote both inclusiveness & accessibility throughout the world. Ability App will be formatted within the principles of universal design so individuals with visual, auditory, cognitive, & motor impairments can effectively navigate the app. Individuals with impairments & their caregivers will be able to download the app for free on their smartphones or computers.

The app will provide information regarding specific accessibility features located at places of public accommodation. The accessibility features noted in the app will include wheelchair ramps, wheelchair accessible seating, Braille signs and menus, & assistive technology for people with hearing impairments. Ability App will also list services that promote full participation in activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs).

These services will include: (1) In-home care (2) Grocery delivery (3) Accessible transportation (4) Occupational therapy

One in 4 U.S. adults (61 million Americans) have a disability that impacts major life activities (CDC, 2015).

Disability becomes more common with age affecting about 2 in 5 adults age 65 & older (CDC, 2015).

Baby Boomers will make up 15% of our population by 2020 (CDC, 2015).

"Reports from countries with laws on accessibility, even those dating from 20 to 40 years ago, confirm a low level of compliance. Little information is available in accessible formats, & many communication needs of people with disabilities are unmet" (WHO, 2016, p.10).

"Restricted participation in social activities impedes community reintegration. Therefore, promoting participation is an important goal of rehabilitation for people with SCI" (Atobatele et al., 2018, p. 306).

"Increased social participation improved community reintegration & feelings of self-worth and confidence among individuals with SCI. Community reintegration leads to life satisfaction & a sense of competence and is essential for psychological and economic well-being" (Atobatele et al., 2018, p.306).
