Message from the President

May 21-27, 2017 is National Public Works Week, celebrating public works professionals' roles and informing the public on the importance, value, and necessity of public works in their daily lives. Public works is the cornerstone of civilization, providing, maintaining, and improving the structures and services that ensure a higher quality of life for our communities, keeping us healthy and allowing our communities to grow and prosper. When I reflect on what makes being involved in the public works field great and satisfying, it is in experiencing the excitement of having almost immediate results of putting operational changes in place, to resolve an issue a community has struggled with, especially when the idea was generated from deep down within the organization. It is the ability to take an idea from those we serve and empower our customers with the ability to make a difference in their community. Some of the best ideas for public projects did not come from technical experts but from ordinary citizens, who with our technical assistance nurture their idea into a successful result which brings community pride and heartfelt joy. Often the public works field takes a back seat to other professions or disciplines we work with. I've lost count on the number of law enforcement and fire/medical emergency television shows which have aired. I am still waiting for the first drama about public works oriented operations. I think the last show with a public works focus may have been The Honeymooners with Ralph Cranston being a transit operator for Gotham City Bus out of Brooklyn and his neighbor Ed Norton a sanitation worker, who describes his job as "Subsupervisor in the sub-division of the department of subterranean sanitation, I just keep things moving along". Maybe we should all be thankful that the more recent comedy show was Parks and Recreation verses Public Works. I know that we all have real life stories to enjoy and make us laugh. APWA and Colorado Chapter events provide a great opportunity to share our stories with our peers, but more importantly, APWA is a great place to learn, share and grow for public works professionals. Today, membership in APWA is at an all-time high with 29,807 members at the end of March. The Colorado Chapter of APWA can provide a more personal touch point to this same great network of professionals in the public works field. The amount of resources available and the many different ways to access these resources seem limitless, whether it be in person at conferences and trainings, list serves, technical committees, interactive online participation or the traditional articles, web search, books and videos. Membership benefits are plentiful and worthwhile. If you are a member, take part in these opportunities to expand your world, and share the benefits of being a member with those who aren't. If you are not a member, explore the many ways that being a member can assist you in your public works profession. Better yet, reach out to a Colorado Chapter member as we are more than willing to assist you. In the end, isn't providing service and making improvements what being a public works professional is all about?

Greg Hall, Town of Vail
