The A+ Active Adults Book Discussion Group meets the first Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the A+ room at The Community House. This is a small and friendly group that welcomes newcomers and reads some great selections! Please come by and join us for some interesting discussion.

October 2, 2017 – The Professor and the Madman: a tale of murder, insanity, and the making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester. Masterfully researched and eloquently written, is an extraordinary tale of madness, genius, and the incredible obsessions of two remarkable men that led to the making of the Oxford English Dictionary -- and literary history.

November 6, 2017 – A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman.  A novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year,’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down.”

December 4, 2017 – Make Your Bed by William McRowen. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments.

A View From the Bridge – Goodman Theatre and Lunch

Arthur Miller’s tale of a Brooklyn longshoreman obsessed with his 17-year-old niece and his raging jealousy over her love of an immigrant will leave audiences feeling “ridiculously blessed to have been a witness to the events you just saw” (The New York Times). We’ll enjoy lunch before the play at Petterino’s.

RIGOLETTO

No character in opera is more powerfully dramatic than the court jester Rigoletto, whose acid tongue and all-consuming desire for revenge lead to catastrophe for himself and his sweet, love-struck daughter Gilda. Of all the great Verdi works, none boasts more unforgettable tunes than this one. You’ll thrill to the licentious Duke of Mantua’s “La donna è mobile” and Gilda’s stunning “Caro nome,” not to mention the most celebrated quartet in all opera. Dominating the story, though, is Rigoletto himself, one of Verdi’s greatest characterizations—a complex and tragic figure, both pitiful and ferocious, with stupendous music to match.

Queen Elizabeth II – The Extraordinary Life of a Modern Monarch

In this illustrated lecture, historian Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., explores the life of Britain’s famous monarch, from her childhood, the abdication of her uncle, her marriage to a navy officer names Philip, her World War II service, and her struggle to balance her roles as queen and mother. You’ll get a close-up view of her “red boxes” and her relationships with her children (and their often-disastrous marriages) and her grandchildren. Get to know the woman behind the images and the spirited personality, sense of humor and savvy intelligence with which she meets her demanding obligations. We will enjoy a buffet lunch before Ms. Goddard’s presentation.

Studebaker Museum and Oliver Mansion – South Bend Indiana

The Studebaker National Museum houses the world’s largest collection of U.S. Presidential Carriages, including the Barouche that President Abraham Lincoln used the night of his assassination. In 1966, the Studebaker Corporation gifted its 33-vehicle collection to the City of South Bend.  This collection, which includes the Presidential carriages, and the Studebaker family’s Conestoga Wagon, formed the nucleus of the current Studebaker National Museum. The collection also includes military vehicles supplied for the U.S. government from 1857 through the Vietnam era.

The Oliver mansion was built by 19th century industrialist J.D. Oliver from 1895-1996. The mansion is a 38-room Romanesque Queen Anne house designed by New York architect Charles Alonzo Rich. The furnishings on all three floors are original, giving visitors a remarkable glimpse of how the mansion appeared during the 72 years the Oliver family lived there. Oak, cherry and mahogany woodwork are found throughout the mansion as well as leaded glass windows and 14 fireplaces. The furnishings include period porcelains, glass, silver, prints, and statuary,

including two bronze busts by noted Chicago sculptor Lorado Taft. We’ll have lunch at the Tippecanoe Restaurant in South Bend when we arrive. This trip requires a good deal of walking.

Turandot

Turandot, Puccini’s final opera and one of the biggest blockbusters in the repertoire, transports us to an exotic fantasy of ancient China. The regal, forbidding Princess Turandot poses three riddles to each prince who wishes to win her — but anyone who fails to answer correctly is executed. Prince Calaf answers correctly, and he declares that he’s willing to die if Turandot finds out his name by dawn. The plot unfolds to music of extraordinary brilliance, including “Nessun dorma,” the most popular of all Italian tenor arias!
