Regional Elite Team Program Manual(Updated 10/26/16)**Yellow Highlights Denote ChangesRegional Elite Team ProgramPurpose The Regional Elite Team Program (RETP) is being developed for the following reasons:To foster the overall development and growth of Optional Gymnastics in Region 2.To provide an opportunity for Talent Identification of Region 2 athletes. To provide an opportunity for Athlete Development through increased Physical Preparation and Critical Skill Development. To provide a venue for increased Coaches Education through practical applications. To identify and select 6 athletes to represent Region 2 at the Elite Team Cup which is held annually in conjunction with the American Cup.To identify and select the coaching staff that will represent Region 2 at the Elite Team Cup annually. Athlete Selection ProcessResultsResults from the 2016 Region 2 Championships and the 2016 JO National Championships will be used to determine a pool of athletes that will be invited to participate in the Regional Elite Team Program (RETP). This will be accomplished by using the following guidelines.Age Groups Athletes from the following age groups will be eligible to qualify for the pool of athletes:Level 10 (17 – 18 year olds) – Must be age eligible to compete for Region 2 in the 2016 – 2017 competitive season.Level 10 (15 – 16 year olds)Level 9 (13 – 14 year olds)Level 8 (12 year olds only)Ranking SystemThe following ranking system will be used to determine the pool of athletes that will be invited to participate in the RETP.Region 2 ChampionshipsRegardless of age group, all age eligible athletes scores will be combined and ranked from 1st – 10th based on the results from the 2016 Region 2 Championships. A point system will be used to award points based on ranking for each event. The point system will be as follows:Highest score on the event (1st place) = 10 points.Next highest score on the event (2nd place) = 9 points3rd place = 8 points, 4th place = 7 points, etc. with 10th place receiving 1 point.*Please note the following:An athlete may receive points on a particular event by being in the top 10, but receive “0” points on another event if they are not in the top 10.If there is a tie, in score, on any event then all athletes that tied will receive the same corresponding points for that rank. The next rank(s) will be skipped if there are multiple ties. This ensures that there will only be 10 athletes receiving points on any one event. Exception – if there is a tie for 10th place then all 10th place athletes will receive a 1.0 score and then there would be more than 10 athletes receiving scores.JO National ChampionshipsThe same ranking system will be used, as mentioned above, based on the results of the 2016 JO National Championships. It is likely that an athlete will receive points based on their Regional Championships results, but not qualify to the JO National Championships and therefore be ineligible to receive points based on the results of the JO National Championships. They are still eligible to be considered in the pool of athletes for the RETP.RETP Invitation/Participation RequirementsThe top 12 athletes from the ranking system described above will automatically be invited to participate in the RETP.If any of the top 12 athletes decline the invitation then the next athlete in rank order will be invited to participate in the RETP.After the top 12 athletes have accepted invitation into the RETP, the Region 2 Board will then have the authority to pick 4 at-large athletes and invite them to participate in the RETP for a total pool of 16 athletes for the RETP.From this pool of 16 athletes the Regional Board will select 6 athletes to represent Region 2 at the 2017 Elite Team Cup to be held March 2nd – 5th in Newark, NJ.RETP Participation RequirementsBy accepting invitation onto the RETP each athlete will be required to support and represent Region 2 in the following ways:Participate in 1 of 2 events during the 2016 – 2017 competitive season. (It is highly recommended that the athletes participate in both events). The location of the event will be Metropolitan Gymnastics in Kent, WA.Any athlete that does not participate in one of these events listed above will become ineligible to be considered to represent Region 2 at the Elite Team Cup.If selected as one of the top 6 athletes, travel to the Elite Team Cup will be required. The final deadline for selecting the top 6 athletes will be February 1st, 2017.Athlete Acceptance TimelineAthletes that have qualified via the ranking system outlined above or selected as an at-large athlete, will receive an official invitation to join the RETP.
