James JanuaryComS 185Video Project ProposalTitle: Track Star Chronicles (Working Title)Theme or Premise: This would be a documentary about some of the athletes and/ or coaches of the Sacramento State track team including Sakya Bolton (8 time conference Champion), Erinn Jones (Conference champion), Kathleen Raske (Coach) and hopefully Olympic Gold medalist Stephanie Brown-Trafton.Objectives: In this documentary I hope to shed a light on the life of a track and field champion. I would like to capture how they live, eat, work out, and practice to rise to the top of their sport. I want to show the audience how much work and dedication it takes to become a champion at the collegiate level and beyond. Synopsis or treatment: I would like to start out with interviews from current track athletes that are still competing as a part of Sacramento States track and field team. These Athletes include those who hold school records, those who have won conference championships, and those who have gone on to national championships. I will be choosing from Sakya Bolton, Jesse Elverom, Erinn Jones, and Zach Coniglio because of their many accomplishments in track and field at Sacramento State. Sakya just completed her last outdoor season with the team last year. She has won the long jump, the hurdles, or both at every big sky championship she competed in since her freshman year here. Jesse Elverom Holds the javelin record at the school and ranked in the top 10 in the nation last year, his final season. Both Erinn and Zach are Throwers and both won at least one of their events at the Big Sky Championships indoor and outdoor last year. They also hold multiple school records. They would be interviewed to get a sense of who they are, what they do, why they compete, how they accomplished their goals… etc. During this section there will also be some action footage either from previous meets or taken during practice. Then I would move on and repeat the same sort of process with the head coach and finally with Stephanie. With Stephanie I would like to focus mostly on her experiences at the Olympics and Olympic trials. At the end, if time permits, I would like to interview one of the” up and comers” so to speak, on the team. This way I can show the audience the path this person is on and if it is similar to the path of those previously interviewed. For this portion I would like to interview a girl named Devin Collins. Last year was her freshman year and already she has emerged as one of the stars of the team. She scored in both indoor and outdoor Championships as well as breaking in to the top 10 school records of several events. In some portions of the video I would like to have a list of questions that I would ask everyone and then show each persons’ answer to show how they are similar and how they may differ from each other.Style and Genre: The genre for my video would be a sports documentary. I would like it to be similar to a movie one might see on sports center on a famous athletes’ birthday but shorter. For example, I recently saw an interview on Mary Decker, one of the most talented runners in American history, and I would like my project to resemble that. Target Audience: this documentary would target people anywhere from 10 to 60. Most of the people I wish to reach would be around my age and into college sports, but the addition of an American Olympian like Stephanie Brown Trafton could attract a much broader audience. Anyone who watches the Olympics would be interested in my project.Length of video: My video would need to be the maximum 10 minutes.Plausibility statement: This project can be completed in this semester mostly because I am on the track team and have access to all of the people I have mentioned (Still working on Finalizing Mrs. Brown-Trafton). Most of the people mentioned are my team mates. Also we are on our off season so we will have much more time to film than we would if this were going on during spring semester when we are in season and traveling every weekend. In addition to the fact that I am friends with the “cast” of the video, I also have access to equipment if needed. My dad works at Comcast and therefore has cameras, lighting equipment, microphones, and editing equipment that he will allow me to use. The only thing I don’t have set for sure is where some of the interviews would take place. Some places I was considering, like the weight room, may require permission so I will get that from the appropriate person or just pick a different place. I think a documentary like the one I would like to make is very reasonable to attempt in this period of time. Estimated Schedule: I would like to get any exterior shots taken care of in October or before it starts to rain too often. Other than that my schedule will be pretty flexible. I believe most of the interviewees will be most available on weekends so Saturdays will work best for shooting the interviews. We may even be able to shoot some footage at practice instead of having them go out at a different time and do their event. This way it will be more realistic and more convenient for them as well. ................
