First Day of First Grade

[pic]

Dear Parents,

The children had a super first week! They were “troopers” with the heat and making the transition to a full day of school. I am very excited about working with them. I also look forward to meeting with all of you and sharing life in first grade. “Back to School Night” is Wednesday evening at 7:00pm.

This week the students will begin reviewing their first “Word Work” words. These first few weeks we will review the kindergarten word list. My main goal regarding “Word Work” is that the children learn to recognize these words in their reading, begin to develop spelling skills, identify word patterns and use them in their writing. Throughout the month we will have a “Word Work Review” or “Show Me What You Know.” Please keep in mind that I am not looking for “perfect” scores (often times it is not completed with pencil/paper. We may write on chalk slates or white boards). I see this as another opportunity for them to practice writing words and improve letter formation. Monday’s homework is to write these words (Tuesday, this week, due to the holiday). Word Work Books will come home on Mondays. Please remember to use these words to select an activity to work on with your child. Remember to sign their book each week. They are to be returned to school on Tuesdays. (Weekly homework schedule listed below)

“Word Work Words” will also be listed in their homework book. I recommend putting a list of these words in their bedroom or on the refrigerator. This will give your child the opportunity to have fun practicing them throughout the week.

I am beginning “Mystery Readers” in two weeks. If you have a day off from work and are available before this, please email me. There is nothing better than a great book and a chance to share it with those you care about! The mystery reader can be a Mom, Dad, and Grand Mom, Grand Pop or older sibling in the school. “Mystery Reader” time will be on Wednesdays at 12:00 pm. If you are interested in doing this, please send me an email. I will begin scheduling them as I receive them. Please keep in mind … if you have a scheduled date and time that you will be “off” from work and would like to come in on that date, please note that in the email. I will begin sending home confirmation slips next week.

This week, we will work on writing our first and last names properly (use of lines and correct upper/lower case letters). Please encourage your child to practice this at home. Only the first letter of the first and last name is to be capitalized. Please let me know if you would like some practice pages for home.

Today I am sending home the first Scholastic book order form. If you are interested in ordering a book, please go to my School Wires site and the tab labeled “Scholastic Books.” The books will be shipped to Doyle. Our class access code is – J9H4F.
