We have developed an excellent reputation at home and abroad and rank among the best places in the world for teaching and researching sociology, broadly interpreted. Department members have pioneered several new fields of sociological inquiry ranging from the study of tourism and social mobilities through cultural political economy and the social implications of environmental change to policy concerns in fields such as energy demand, gender, violence, emerging technologies, big data, and cybersecurity. They are also committed to an emancipatory ‘public sociology’ that critically engages practically as well as intellectually with the interests of publics in hard and uncertain times.The Department’s success stems in part from our trans- and post-disciplinary focus, which reflects the fact that complex contemporary challenges do not come neatly packaged in disciplinary boxes but call for a range of social scientific perspectives. We have a collaborative approach that extends well beyond the department and, indeed, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and we encourage a diversity of voices, cultivate links to local, national and global groups, and create opportunities for dialogue.The Department has a strong post-graduate community and hosts or contributes to ten research centres. Its members play leading roles in several of the newly founded cross University research developments including; the Institute of Social Futures, the Data Science Institute, and Security Lancaster.
