Directions: Go to the site and then go to the How it Began page that is located on the left hand side bar. Answer the following questions as you go along with this part of the assignment.

1. Who was killed that started WWI? What date did it happen?

2. Click on that person’s link. What happened earlier that day that made this person upset?

3. Go back to the page before. What 2 countries did France declare war on because of the treaty with Russia?

4. When did the U.S. finally enter WWI?

16. Who invented the machine gun? Where was he born?

Go to the navigation bar and go to the Poison Gas link. Answer the following questions.

17. What country first used poison gas? What month and year was it?

18. How many casualties did the USA have from poison gas? What country had the most?

Go to the top navigation bar and go to the Christmas Truce link. Answer the following questions.

19. What year did the Christmas truce take place? What occurred during the Christmas Truce?

Go to the top navigation bar and go to the Songs link. Answer the following questions.

20. Choose 2 songs from 2 different years that have both the lyrics and song. After listening to the song, write a sentence on what song you heard and what it was about.

For 10 points Extra Credit, use the pictures and accounts from this website to create a fictional WWI letter home to your parents. You can be either a soldier from the Central Powers or Allies, but you must explain what country you are from (Ladies, you can pretend you are a nurse or a male soldier for this assignment). This 1 page letter home must include:

• What year is it?

• What’s going on in the war (give factual information)? Did you just get done fighting in a major battle or did you just enter the war? (Remember most foot soldiers knew very little about why they were attacking certain areas)

• What do you miss about home?

• What were the living conditions like? (Remember the 5 senses when describing this)

• Which type of trench they were in? (front, support, or reserve)

• How you are feeling about the war?

Remember to be creative in your letter and that it has to be at least one page long.
