Lesson Essential Question – If you had to “boil down” your SciVis notes into one, small, tri-fold handout, what would they look like?

Focus Activity:

• Please go to my web page

o And open the 1st document in the list – SciVis Exam Review Trifold.pub

o I have also place a copy of this file in your I:\2011-2012\Students folder, just in case you struggle w/ the web page.

• This is an MS Publisher file. Publisher is a great little part of MS Office that allows you to make all sorts of custom printed cards, invitations (think GRADUATION, banners, posters, etc.)

• I want you to take the basic template that I am giving you with this file and FILL IT UP with the MOST IMPORTANT bullets you can think of from your SciVis I notes. NOTE 1: THERE ARE TWO SIDES/PAGES to a TriFold! NOTE 2: My template has references to “brief description of the dish” – this is what you are supposed to TYPE OVER w/ your SciVis notes. The word “dishes” appears b/c I used a restaurant menu as a template. I have given you (again) the % of items on the test from each Unit – so I hope to see a lot of notes from D & F.

• There is a space on the template for a NEW 3dsMax and Adobe Illustrator creation. I know NOTES, NOTES, NOTES can get boring – so CREATE something new and paste it on your tri-fold – but remember, the TRI-FOLD is what gets graded today.

• I have printed out two copies of the Tri-Fold Template and left them w/ the Sub, so you can see how it’s supposed to look when you are done. There are TWO pages to the product, which will get taped/stapled to create the final TriFold.

• This Tri-Fold is DUE at the end of class today. I will go into YOUR I:\Students folder to check your work when I get back to school later today. Please use your time wisely.

• You DO NOT need headphones of any sort to complete this assignment and I have instructed the substitute teacher to collect any headphones that are out during class.

SciVis Students create animations, video footage, audio/video editing and provide explanation of software and tools used by the group in the process.

Schedule:

Meet for 45 min once a week. Subject to change based upon overall project timeline.

• Dec 15, 2011 – Fully edited and rendered video from each group on common misconceptions. Video will be put into “heavy rotation” on Cable 2 over holiday break.

• 2-3 min duration for each presentation.

What’s In It For ME?

Employers and college admissions officers want to work with people who are creative problem solvers. In 2011, an electronic portfolio is a MUST if you want to set yourself apart. When someone says they have 10 equally qualified candidates, take out the DVD from this project and say “I can solve problems like this…….”

Nine Common Earth Science Misconceptions

• Humans are not responsible for global warming.

• Earth is molten, except for the crust.

• Continents do not move fast enough to detect.

• The Earth is 6 – 20 thousand years old.

• Dinosaurs and cavemen lived at the same time.

• Seasons are caused by the Earth’s changing distance from the Sun.

• Phases of the Moon are caused by a shadow from the Earth.

• Any crystal that scratches glass is a diamond.

• Holes in the Ozone Layer lead to Climate Change (Global Warming).

Focus Activity – Please open 3ds Max and create a new scene with a BIG sphere right in the middle of it. Go to I:\GEckart\Textures\Moon and apply the moon texture to the sphere. Use the UVW Map modifier that you learned about yesterday to make the map “fit” the sphere the best you can.

Now, in Material Editor, click “Go To Parent>Maps>Bump” and then click on “None.” Select the Moon Image again and set Bump = 200. Do a quick render and see what things look like. Play with varying bump between -500 and +500 and see what works best for you.

Essential Questions – What are some basic 3D modeling techniques?

Focus Activity – Let’s try something new today. I want to see you create some “Animated Modifiers.” In particular, I want you to create five different EXTENDED PRIMITIVES. After creating them, I want you to apply a different modifier to each one. The modifiers I want you to use are: Bend, Melt, Noise, Ripple, and Twist. After you apply the modifiers, I want you to select ONE object, turn on Autokey and vary the modifier parameters between frame 0 and 300 such that the effect is animated. Once you complete this for one shape, repeat w/ the next shape until ALL five shapes have animated modifiers applied to them.
