Name: ______________________________________ Pd: _________ Chesapeake Bay: Save the Bay Research

Introduction

The Chesapeake Bay needs your help! Every day the people who live in the Chesapeake's watershed and air shed continue to pollute this delicate ecosystem. The plants and animals that have lived in the Bay for thousands of years are on the verge of extinction. It's not too late to help the Bay. What can your team do to help the Bay?

Task

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has hired your team to create informational brochures to help educate the surrounding residents of the Chesapeake. For each brochure you must research and present information on one critter that lives in the Bay. Each brochure must answer the following focus questions:

1. What is your critter’s life cycle?

2. To eat or to be eaten? Where does your critter fit on the food chain?

3. What environment does your critter prefer?

4. What can people do to save the Bay?

5. Anything interesting you've learned?

Process

Follow these steps to keep you on track.

1. Meet with your team and assign roles (you can keep the same role for all

4 critters or rotate for each critter)

A. Stork-life cycle investigator

B. Chef-food chain investigator

C. Tree Hugger-environment investigator

D. Mr./Ms. Green-investigates ways to help the Bay

2. Brainstorm focus questions for each role (ASK)

3. Choose four critters from the list below

4. Use online resources to research (Gather)

5. Record information from online resources (Gather)

6. Rewrite/Edit/Revise your research into your own written paragraphs (Organize)

7. Create your 4 brochures (Prepare)

8. Practice presenting your brochures (prepare)

9. Give oral presentations to class (present)

Critter List:

Blue Crab, Bluefish, Bog Turtle, Bullfrog, Clam, Croaker, Diamondback Terrapin, Eastern Painted Turtle, Egret, Garter Snake, Horseshoe Crab, Mallard Duck, Marsh Hawk (Northern Harrier), Menhaden, Osprey, Red-Winged Blackbird, Seagull, Seahorse, Shrimp, Striped Bass, Perch, Plankton (Zoo and Photo)

Conclusion

Now that you've collected all the necessary information you'll have to create your brochures. You might find that you don't have enough information and you'll need to collect more. Remember, it's up to you to educate these people on your Bay critters and to provide them with information for how they might help......Save the Bay!

Important steps from here:

1. Rewrite your research notes into YOUR OWN paragraphs

2. Meet with your team to create the brochures

a) Fold a piece of computer paper into thirds

b) Page 1 is the cover, including the critter's name and a picture (may be printed from internet)

c) Pages 2, 3, 4, and 5 are life cycle, food chain, environment, and ways to save the bay (in the order of your choice)

d) Page 6 (the back of the brochure) should include interesting facts

3. Be sure that your information is neat, accurate, and well written.

4. Determine how you will present your research (will each person present 1 brochure or will you present as your roles?)

Evaluation

Roles 1,2,3 - Stork, Chef, Tree Hugger

Stork- Research information on the entire life cycle of your critter

Chef- Reseach what your critter eats and (Yikes!) what eats it

Tree Hugger- Research the environment that your critter lives in

(Remember to search for the answers to the focus questions you have developed for your role. For example: A stork might want to know how many years the critter lives or how it changes throughout its life.)
