International star-crowned chefs and top culinary events in the Upper Engadine

Delightful, fascinating, and unique – Preview of the 2011 St. Moritz Gourmet Festival

At the 18th St. Moritz Gourmet Festival, from 31st January to 4th February 2011, a succession of top culinary events will take place. Gourmets should seize the opportunity to attend! This time, ten star-crowned guest chefs from all over Europe, together with the chefs of the best local hotels and restaurants, will transform the Upper Engadine into a Mecca for gourmet fans.

Besides the well-known festival establishments such as Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, Carlton Hotel, Grand Hotel Kronenhof, Hotel Chesa Guardalej, Hotel Schweizerhof, Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains, Kulm Hotel and Suvretta House, and the event locations at Mountain Hotel Muottas Muragl, the Cava of Hotel Steffani, and Mathis Food Affairs on Corviglia, two new festival partners will help make St. Moritz a culinary Mecca: the five-star Hotel Waldhaus in Sils-Maria and the Hunting Lodge of Hotel Bellavista in Silvaplana-Surlej.

Gourmet experiences for all the senses

The St. Moritz Gourmet Festival will open on Monday, 31st January 2011, with the ‘Welcome Cocktail Party’ at the Carlton Hotel. On the three following evenings the delicacies produced by the guest chefs and local chefs can be appreciated in detail during the 5-course ‘Gourmet Dîners’ at the different festival partner hotels. For the ‘Kitchen Party’ the venue is the canteen kitchen of Badrutt’s Palace Hotel where the guests, each wearing a kitchen apron and equipped with a knife and fork, take the food directly from sizzling frying pans. And at the ‘Gourmet Safaris’ the gourmets set off on a discovery trip through different kitchens to savour each course at the Chef’s Table of a different St. Moritz festival hotel.

During ‘The Tasting’, the new event for festival guests and gastronomy professionals at Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains, different tasting stands of the most renowned suppliers of fine wines, exquisite delicacies, and other selected culinary delights are to be discovered. At the Hunting Lodge of the new festival partner Hotel Bellavista in Silvaplana-Surlej, for the first time ‘Delicious game get-togethers’ will be held, featuring exclusive game specialities provided from the hotel’s own estate, as well as Grisons specialities, prepared at an open fireplace.

‘World’s best wines – simply divine’ is the event taking place at the new festival partner establishment, Hotel Waldhaus in Sils-Maria. It involves a tasting of character wines of world class presented to the guests by Jan Martel from the house of wine, Martel AG St. Gall, followed by a three-course menu accompanied by further fine wines. ‘Italian Masterpieces’ – a selection of the rarest and finest Italian wines – will be celebrated on Muottas Muragl by Ueli Schiess from the house of wine, Caratello Weine, St. Gall, accompanied by Engadine specialities.

Furthermore, facing a beautiful alpine panorama, unsophisticated ‘Mountain Luncheons’ and ‘Mountain Dinners’ await the guests on Muottas Muragl. On Corviglia, at Mathis Food Affairs, the view is magnificent, too. Here, top chef Reto Mathis spoils the guests at lunchtime with his ‘Saveurs de LA Montagne’ luncheons and with tastings à la carte by Gebhard Hämmerle Fine Spirits and cheese expert Maître Antony.

Another delightful and most entertaining event is the ‘Kitchen whispering’ at Hotel Schweizerhof St. Moritz. This time it will possible to watch the Tyrolean star-crowned guest chef Herbert Hintner, while he talks with friendly top chefs and other VIPs, actually in the Schweizerhof canteen kitchen, during the preparation of delicious aperitif titbits.

Jewels from the house of Champagne Laurent-Perrier are part of the Suvretta House programme during the exclusive menu ‘Fascination Champagne’, created by master guest chef Andrea Berton (two Michelin stars, Milan), which is accompanied by musical interludes. For the ‘Wine and Cheese Celebration’, Hotel Steffani will open up its exceptionally well equipped wine cellar to the festival guests, and the ultimate sweet temptation will be available again at the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel with the ‘Chocolate Cult’ by the renowned Confiserie Sprüngli, Paradeplatz, Zurich. This is also where the ‘Davidoff Cigar Workshop’ will be held; an occasion for epicures to learn everything worth knowing about the enjoyment of fine cigars.

The Festival’s culmination will be the ‘Great Valser Gourmet Final’ at Mathis Food Affairs on Corviglia. In the evening of Friday, 4th February 2011, at an altitude of 2,486m, all the master chefs will celebrate together a multi-course menu, for which each guest chef will prepare one course in his personal style that will nevertheless perfectly fit the menu as a whole. Accompanied by fine champagne, wine, and live music, this evening goes on until 1 a.m. and will certainly be a very special highlight.

Whatever the heart and the palate desire, the 2011 - 18th St. Moritz Gourmet Festival will offer a captivating blend of event and gourmet culture for all the senses, supported by the 13 festival partner establishments of St. Moritz and the Upper Engadine.
