Annotated Bibliography - PET ABANDONMENT

THE PET ABANDONMENT ISSUEMemorandum TO: Amber Strother, ProfessorFROM: Alexandra Bagsic, StudentDATE: May 30, 2015SUBJECT: Pet Abandonment Pet abandonment has been an issue for a quite some time. Pet abandonment is defined differently in each state but basically it is when an owner leaves an animal in a public or a private place without the intention of returning for it or finding someone else to provide the care it needs. Pets are quite helpless by themselves so imagine leaving a three year old child alone—helpless and abandoned in a park without having the intention of coming back for him. Imagine the trauma and fear that this child would go through and suffer—wondering where you are and why they left out of nowhere. This problem does not only occur in the United States but all over the world. The amount of pets being abandoned every year has been increasing. Laws in early 1900s were passed by some European countries—specifically United Kingdom to punish individuals who abandon and neglect their pets. This means that pet abandonment have been an ongoing problem for more than several centuries. A lot of individuals adopt pets without thinking of the lifetime commitment they are getting themselves into. Due to this reason, six to eight million animals are abandoned every year CITATION PeT14 \l 1033 (PeTA). This problem is an ongoing problem in Pullman, especially for WSU students. Every year, thousands of students are graduating and leaving their pets behind either in the animal shelter or in the streets—leaving these pets alone, abandoned, and neglected. ?On a much larger scale, every year US spend about a billion to “pick up, house, and euthanize homeless animals”. Euthanasia or mercy killing is the process in which animals are put to death painlessly either because of incurable diseases or because the shelter is too crowded. Leaving these pets can lead to many different problems such as overpopulation and an increase number of euthanized animals as previously stated. Even when people think that they are being responsible by taking their animals to a rescue with a no kill policy, pound dogs on death row could have been given those lifesaving places instead getting put to death CITATION Pet14 \l 1033 (Pet Abandonment). In addition, most of these animals go insane from loneliness and confinement in the shelters—so not committing to these animals for the rest of their lives can cause a long term problem in their psyche CITATION PeT14 \l 1033 (PeTA). Leaving these pets alone is like leaving a man in an island with no one to interact with or talk to—it would cause them to be socially retarded and often lead them to insanity. Many college students lack the knowledge that come with adopting pets. They lack to understand that adopting a pet means that they are committing to these creatures for the rest of their lives. In addition because most college students do not get their pets neutered/spayed, it causes more pets to be abandoned and neglected. It is often unknown who owns these animals. Individuals who only get a pet for college often do not get their pet microchipped. This makes punishing these individuals for the crime of pet abandonment extremely hard. So if this problem is solved, it will not only benefit the abandoned animals but also the rest of the community. By addressing and funding this problem, it can lead to less stray animals wondering the community. It can also lead to finding homes for these neglected animals which would be a source of joy for both the animals and their future owners. To begin this process, the problem would need to be addressed. The community would need to accept that it is a problem and that it is present in the community. Because nowadays, most things go viral through social media, why not try that effect? Even if only a few individuals care about the problem now, these individuals can join our Facebook page for the cause and inform their own networks about the problem and those individuals in turn would inform their network about it—creating a ripple effect. In addition, we can get in contact with PeTA and PIGS to get more information about the problem and what they are doing to try and solve this problem. In addition, if we start to educate in school and in public places such as coffee houses and libraries about this problem and how spaying/neutering pets will help this cause, it will build up the network that wants to take action to solve this problem that we have already built through our own network. To get an initial estimate of how many people know about this problem, we can release a survey via social media for individuals to take. After getting the result of this survey, it would extremely beneficial to list out the things most individuals know and what they do not and go off of these results to create a better plan in solving the problem of pet abandonment. It would inform us what people should be educated in about pet abandonment and how to appeal to them more as an audience. After all the research has been done, it will be transferred into a formal report. Annotated Bibliography BIBLIOGRAPHY ASPCA. Animal Abandonment FAQ. 6 Febraury 2014. . 2015 30 May .This source covers the frequently asked questions that individuals might have about pet abandonment. It covers what it is, the statistics, and the consequences of abandoning a pet. This source is fairly accurate because American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is one of the top organizations that help abandoned, abused, and neglected animals out there. The information provided was very informational and provides a lot of detail for the research of pet abandonment. This can really help my research if I am contemplating about the rules and regulation of pet abandonment and it can also help me clearly define terms in a much comprehensible way. Pet Abandonment. December 2014. . 19 May 2015.This source addresses the problem of pet abandonment and its effect on the animal's well being physically and psychologically. It goes in depth about the causes and contributing factors of pet abandonment—things such as puppy mills, breeders, pet shops, etc. In addition, it provides possible solutions to the problem. The author of this website provides a history of how she has been involved in these types of cases and what she has done in the past that makes her an expert in the topic which assures me that she did not just put the article together without knowledge in what she is talking about. Her intended audience is practically anyone—the article really explores the issue in the US and in other countries in very deep details. Even though this article might not seem as reliable as the ASPCA and PeTA, it will be one of the best articles that I can rely on when I am doing my research because the research that the author has done is very well documented and detailed. PeTA. Companion Animal Overpopulation. 2014. . 19 May 2015.This source in particular is extremely reliable, probably the most reliable one in my sources because it is by PeTA—the largest animal rights organization in the world. It gives the statistics of pets that are being killed every year because of pet overpopulation. They go into detail how one pet abandoned can lead to 48 strays/abandoned animals in as little as over a year. This can really help my research because if a renowned organization is releasing this information about the issue, it will make my research much more validated—people will be more willing to put some time to listen and educate themselves about the problem. Winans, Carrie. MySecuritySign Unveils Pet Abandonment Signs. New York, 26 August 2013. source is more about ways of avoiding pet abandonment. It talks about how this company has launched a line of pet abandonment signs to help inform individuals that it is illegal and promote better care of pets especially in areas where pet abandonment is much more likely to occur. The reliability of this source is pretty high because this is available in the scholarly articles that can be found in universities. It is a supplement to my research because it provides a way to inform people of pet abandonment without being overly intrusive. Also, I will be able to use it to depend my case that pet abandonment is a large problem that needs to be solved—if a big company has released a line of pet abandonment signs, it means that the problem in relevant and is increasing. ................
