The Masked HandicapperChallenge of Champions – Alberta Sires Stakes Super Finals Full EditionToday is a special day that two and three year old Albertabred fillies, colts and geldings have been working towards all season. Points and money earned in the three separate stakes series for each age and gender have been tabulated. The top 9 entered in each class will race in the $50,000.00 Finals while the next 9 or less, depending on the amount of entries, will race in the $10,000.00 consolation races. We also have 3 overnight races mixed in. A lot to get to in this edition so let’s get started!!Race 1Consolation Two Year Old FilliesOutlaw Sharktastic – One of three entrants only in this division. Smart Shark filly who raced better in her last start. In a short field, she seems to pace her last quarters the fastest so she is possibleA Private Affair – Will go off as the favourite in this dash. I am going to call for second because I think her last quarters might get her beatJack N Diane – Has not been competitive in her first two starts. Paces her last quarters ok so has a chance to better my prediction of third for herSelections1-2-3Race 2Consolation Two Year Old Colts/GeldingsChase My Dust – Tested stakes company in many of his starts. Weak last quarters make me hesitant to rate too highly. Call for a shareBelieve in Dragons – Two starts and not too much so far. Draws a better post and has a license to improve a little and grab a minor shareRockin Novel – Seems to be improving a little each start. Draws inside of the other favourite so maybe a chance to reverse the decision of their latest startsSolid Silver – Broke his maiden in a good start from the rail in his latest. Has been competitive with stakes company in the past so rates a strong chance in hereTidal Shark – Had a couple weeks off with sickness. Has always looked like he had a chance to compete with these types. Longshot with a chanceStretch Bandit – Four starts and has yet to prove that he can be competitive in races, especially stakes company. Pass with this groupSelections4-3-5Race 3Consolation Three Year Old Colts and GeldingsWink N Win – Raced competitively with some in the Final so should find this field of the consolation to his liking. Draws the rail and rates the favourite with theseOutlaw Fire N Ice – Has made a couple finals this year but just hasn’t been able to put together the speed to keep up with the top three year olds. Fits well with this groupComes From Away – Competitive in his latest few starts and only beaten 4 lengths by Major Custard. With the right trip he has a license to compete in hereStrange Dragon – Was a winner in his latest versus the claimers. These are much tougher so will hope for a small piece with the an off the pace tripJust Mac – Last few starts he has gone off form, beaten in the claimers by open lengths in his latest. Pass for meWatch Me Disappear – Should be very competitive with this group. 5 wins on the season and a strong off the pace performer, has to be considered a chance with theseStolen Moment – Another one who has been racing with claimers his past few starts with not much success. Draws the outside so will pass in this spotSelections1-6-3Race 4Senga Nitro – Has not been competitive with the top class horses. Drops to a level where you have to consider him more seriously. PossibleSpeaking Of Art – Draws well off a quick break for some sickness. Should be competitive with this group if he is fit. PossibleSnoop De Lion – Has been competitive with this class since moving up. A few tough ones in here today so will call for only a minor share todayJust a Start – Two good efforts after the private purchase. Canadian Pharoh moved back up so this one stands out somewhat in this fieldGray Zee – Has not been able to go with this type since returning from Manitoba. I can see him getting a trip and grabbing a minor shareFlying Officer – Has cooled off a little from his hot streak this summer. Need to see a sign of improved effort before I can call in this class. PassOutlaw Badlands – Dominating effort in his latest one class lower than this. These are much tougher so will be hoping for some cover and grab a piece of the pursePhanatical Maniac – Has raced against the best horses on the grounds for a couple years. Second start back off a long break. Possible with a trip, but wish he drew betterSelections4-1-8Race 5Consolation Three Year Old FilliesJayden Riley – Has been off form for the last month. Draws the rail and has shown nice races but will need a good trip to grab a piece in hereDeja Vroom – Struggled this year with the top fillies but has been very good with this level. Has a shot in hereDontworrydonthurry – Competitive with the claimers, but these are much tougher. Chance at a share with a good tripOriental Express – Races her best on or near the front. Might be able to be close to the lead or on it so I will call for a minor pieceHurry Home – Has raced ok since the barn change. Will be looking for a trip off of a helmet but I can only call for a minor share with theseTreasure Horizon – Has been competitive with the top fillies in this class most of the year. If she minds her manners she could dominate this field, but that is a big if. Will be the favouriteBlue Star Raquel – Broke her maiden in her latest with a nice off the pace effort. She could be highly competitive in here with a good trip. Longshot with a chanceRapidash – This filly seems to fit better in the claimers than with stakes company. Draws the 8 hole so will be a difficult task. PassDark Horse Wine – Has struggled with this level of competition all year. Draws an ok post so could grab a minor share with a good tripSelections6-7-2Race 6Island Hawk – Racing a little better the last few starts. Still a few I prefer in here more but could see her catching a minor share with theseRapid Reaction- Pretty lightly raced since Track on 2 ended their season. Off of her best form so have to pass with this groupRed Star Tiger – Latest was better. Can see a more aggressive trip this week and an improved finish. Possible in hereComes Home First – Dropping from 5k claimers to race with this group. I think will try a wire to wire effort in here. PossibleCooltobeamach – Qualifier was sharp but his first start was not. Need to see an improved effort before toutingLizard King – Also dropping from the 5k claimers and looks to stand out with this group. Last couple starts scare might that he might have gone off form. PossibleAcesndeuces – Just can not draw a decent post when he gets down to this level. One of the many possibilities in here with a good trip. PossibleBad Blood – Drops to rock bottom after a couple weak efforts. If he is on or close to his game he is an easy winner. If not, he will take money and create a better price on someone elseMarvtherat – Made a move that showed he had a little life in his latest. He couldn’t sustain it but getting closer to a win. Call for a minor shareSelections8-6-4Race 7Outlawcalamityjane – Tried a front end effort against the bottom claimers but couldn’t sustain the pace. Moves back up to 5k claimers so have to pass todayA Cowboys Dream – Racing a little better lately. Could be on the front today with the other speed drawing outside. Possible for a decent shareSummer Fantasy – Raced well in her latest just getting picked off late by one that fits at many levels. Has a shot with theseMaxsamian – Raced will and beat the bottom claiming level. Moves back up to the 5k level and this will be tougher but on her best she can compete with these. Minor shareLovethatsixpack – Rates the top call in here after being only beat a couple lengths against ones that would be huge favourites in here. FavouriteTriple Action – Another one who has been racing much tougher and with the right trip could be very competitive with these. PossibleOutlawspotliteonme – Seems to have gone off form. Has tried it from on the pace the past two and couldn’t hang tough in the last quarter. Pass for me todayCasino Events – Was competitive with the bottom level claimers but struggled at the 5k level. That plus drawing the 8 hole makes me pass todayShes On A Roll – Touted her last week at this level and she had no punch to her effort. Still believe she could surprise but her last effort forces me to pass todaySelections5-6-3Race 8 Two Year Old FilliesBurning Hot – This daughter of Blue Burner has had an up and down year. She always has shown tremendous speed, but at the beginning of her career she struggled with breaking issues. Those days are behind her seemingly as in her last start she broke the track record for two year old fillies. She comes into this race in her best form and draws the rail so to be she rates on top as the favourite in this dash!Outlaw Endofanera – This daughter of Blue Burner is named appropriately. Unfortunately Blue Burner has passed and these two year olds are the last crop of Blue Burners that will race. She started her career in the stable of the breeder, Outlaw Stable which is managed by Connie Kolthammer, and was privately purchased in mid season by Dave Lamont and Donna Wyse. Although she is yet to find the winner’s circle, she continues to improve and draws a good post so she is hoping for a share of the cash Sintaluta – The third entry in this race sired by Blue Burner, she started her career on a winning note breaking her maiden in her first career start. Since then things haven’t gone as smoothly. Through a combination of tough posts and very competitive stakes fields, Sintaluta has not raced well in her past few races. She draws well so she will hope for some sort of rebound, but she is a pass for me todayOveractive – Is a daughter of Mystician who had some success early in her career. She started with a win and three seconds in her first four lifetime starts before fading to finish fourth and then having a sluggish effort in a start two weeks ago. She is not at the peak of her form so she will need to find a helmet to follow to get much in here. I could see her as a trifecta or superfecta filler on the back end in this raceOuttheresomewhere- This daughter of Vertical Horizon has had a bit of an inconsistent two year old season. A perfect example is her last two races. Two back she sat off the pace and made a nice closing move in the Rogers Memorial to finish second. Then in her latest start she was much more aggressive trying a closer up trip which didn’t seem to suit her as she faded badly. I could see a minor share with a come from behind tripCustard Smoothie – Tough to say much negative about this daughter of Custard the Dragon. In 5 lifetime starts she has 3 wins and two seconds and has banked over $27,000.00. Her efforts have all been front end or close, so drawing the 6 hole is not ideal but the only one with front end speed inside her is the #1. I predict she will leave and either try to go wire to wire or take a two hole. A share but not on top for meSent By Angels – Another daughter of Custard the Dragon who really showed her improvement in her latest. After getting well back at the half, she came a back half in 56.3 to finish a fast closing second. I can see her employing the same type of strategy in this dash after drawing the 7 hole. She will most likely let the race settle and hope for a speed duel so that late speed can be used to her advantage. PossibleGraceful Horizon – Another daughter of Vertical Horizon who has had a perfect start to her career. Only raced three times and all in stakes races, she has raced on and off the pace to win all three and bank just shy of $29,000.00. I am sure she would have preferred to not draw the 8 hole, but she has show the ability to race well from the back of the pack. Will be following the 7 horse on the outside and hoping for the pace to come back to her to gain a big sliceBearcat Matilda – A daughter of Mystery Chase, this filly has had an up and down year. She started her career with two solid top 3 finishes but since then has lacked the punch to finish off her miles strong and take home big cheques. The 9 hole draw won’t hurt her as her preferred trip seems to be from off the pace. This trainer has surprised before in big races but I struggle to rate her high with this solid group of filliesSelections1-8-7Race 9Two Year Old Colts and GeldingsShark Week – This son of Vertical Horizon has been impressive so far in his career. With a couple different types of trips he is a perfect 3 wins in three starts in his two year old campaign. He has shown the ability to race being forwardly placed so drawing the 1 hole is ideal for him. He held the track record momentarily in a group of two year old boys who have been very impressive. Call for a top three placingPacin Perfect – Another son of Vertical Horizon, who is having a very good season with his sired two year olds, who has been steadily improving over his campaign. He has yet to find the winners circle but has two seconds and a third in four starts. Drawing the two hole ensures him a close up spot and in my mind has top three potentialCodename Cigar Box – This son of Custard the Dragon has shown off his talent almost every week by carding two wins, two seconds and a third in 6 starts. Saying that, he has also made a few breaks which makes him tough to handicap on a weekly basis. Has shown enough ability to beat most of these, question is can he stay pacing to show off that talent? PossibleCarro B Bunsen – A son of Blue Burner who is on the improve. At first glance one will say he only has one second and one third from 6 starts, which is true. The positive spin is they were both in stakes company in his latest two starts. I don’t think he is quite fast enough yet to compete with a couple of the top ones, but could perform well enough to get a piece of the purse and fill out superfectasHad A Hard Handle – Another son of Blue Burner who has had a good two year old season so far. He has managed 2 wins, 2 seconds and a third from 6 starts and banked over $18,000.00. His last start was a head scratcher after getting into a front end war and fading badly in the last quarter. There is speed inside him again today so he won’t hit my list of top picksNevada Vacation – This son of Mystery Chase has raced ok so far at two with 2 second place finishes out of 4 starts. He seems to prefer an off the pace trip which is what he will most likely get as there is a lot of speed inside of him. This final has come up very tough and drawing the 6 hole will not help much. I will pass on him today but he has long shot talent to fill out the back end of gimmick betsLovin Up On You – Another son of Custard the Dragon who has had a nice season so far at two with a couple wins, a second and a third in 4 starts. He came up against one of my top picks last week and when he pulled first up down the backstretch he wasn’t able to get by and faded to finish a distant third. Drawing the 7 hole makes me only rate for a sliver of the purse unless a meltdown happens on the inside of himCrazy I M – This son of Prince Sharka is from the first crop of two year olds from that stud. He has had me baffled a couple times this year as he showed a lot of ability early in his season but he wasn’t able to convert that talent into any wins so far. Drawing the 8 hole today will not make his task any easier in this dash, I have to pass for todayDragon Energy – This son of Custard the Dragon has been awesome so far in his two year old campaign. Out of 5 starts he has 4 wins and a second and has banked over $32,000.00. I have been looking forward to this match up between Dragon Energy and Shark Week all summer as they have not faced each other. Drawing the 9 hole shouldn’t hurt Dragon Energy much as he gets to follow the speedy Shark week. My pick hereSelections9-1-2Race 10Three Year Old FilliesMyglamgal – This daughter of Mystery Chase was one of the last qualifiers for this three year old final. She has had a feat or famish type of year with a couple wins but also a couple clunkers in the past two starts. Draws the rail which will help some, but there are some really good fillies in this dash so I have to pass on her in this groupPast Affair – This daughter of Vertical Horizon has had an amazing turn around in the last two months. After a private sale to the Dave Kelly stable, this filly has really found her best form. She has moved up from racing against claimers to two starts ago beating the top fillies in this class with a monster mile in the Alberta Marquis final. This is a very competitive race, but calling her as my long shot special winner in this finalRockinwithcustard – This daughter of Custard the Dragon has had a nice year so far with 5 wins and over $34,000.00 banked. She has been consistently good with stakes company this season except in the Rumpel Final where she made a break and finished well back. She was a good third in the Marquis final after drawing the tough 9 hole. I could see her making an attempt at a very close to the pace trip. PossibleMiss Itunes – This daughter of Mystery Chase had been a little sluggish for a month or so but her elimination and final races in the Alberta Marquis showed a return closer to her dominant mid summer form. She is famous for her big backstretch move and can pace very fast for a piece of the mile. This race is tough to handicap exactly what trip each filly will have, but I will rate her a top three chanceSnow Shark – This daughter of Custard the Dragon want to be like most humans and quickly turn the page on the 2020 calendar as it has not been what she had hoped for. Even though she has two wins and over $17,000.00 in earnings, this filly who was the two year old of the year expected more from herself at three. She is not in great form currently so I have to pass on here and look elsewhere for my selectionsBearcat Abigail – Three year old daughter of Mystery Chase who has a habit of picking up minor shares in most races. She has 6 on the board finished in 2020, but only one win and has still banked more than $17,000.00. Drawing the 6 hole is not a major hinderance as she tends to prefer an off the pace trip. I can only call for a really minor share in this groupShes A Live Wire – This daughter of JK Royal Flush has drawn into this final after a season that has been just ok. She is coming into this final off two pretty good races with a win and a third. Drawing the 7 hole is not going to help her any as she tends to like being close to the pace. I can’t tout her today with this groupL A Woman – This three year old filly is a daughter of Trust the Artist. She is another filly would like to turn the page on 2020 as it has not been what she had hoped for after banking over 35k in her two year old season. She is catching some pieces of purses but drawing the 8 hole in this nice group of fillies makes me have to pass todayBlue Star Dreaming – This is a three year old daughter of Blue Burner. If you looked up the definition of inconsistent, I think you would see her picture as it has been a crazy up and down season. A few start ago she was looking like the top three year old filly in the province with her efforts in the Rumpel and then a week later she raced slugglish and didn’t qualify for the Alberta Marquis Final. The nine hole won’t hurt her but I will call for a minor share todaySelections2-4-3Race 11Three Year Old Colts and GeldingsMajor Custard – Only one word describes this three year old son of Custard the Dragon’s season…..perfect. Has taken to the track for only 9 starts in 2020, but all of them have ended up with his picture being taken. He has already banked over $100,000.00 in 2020 and to add insult to injury he draws the inside in this $50,000.00 final. Not sure any handicapper could place him anywhere but on top in herePipewrench Charlie – This three year old son of Trust the Artist is an amazing entry into this final as the first stakes races of his career were in the Alberta Maverick. He made enough money to sneak into the final and draws the two hole in here. It is tough to believe that a maiden could be competitive with this group of colts and geldings but he could get a very nice trip. Pass for meWest Coast Dragon – Three year old son of Custard the Dragon who qualified for this final with some minor placings in the stakes series. He has a decent on the board record, but is just a little light in the win category. Draws a decent post in the 3 hole so should get tripped along but I struggle to rate more than a shot at a minor share of the purse in hereCriminal Record – This three year old son of Mystery Chase was on a nice streak of top 2 finishes until the last race where he was not at his best. Overall an awesome year so far with 3 wins and almost $52,000.00 banked in 2020. I think his game plan will be to be aggressive off the gate and hopefully get spotted close to the lead and then try to trip along. Possible to fill out gimmicksDontpokethedragon – Like a few others, 2020 has been a year to forget for this son of Custard the Dragon who won top Alberta honors at Two years old. He just hasn’t been able to get in the right spots in big races to catch big pieces of races even those he finishes off his miles not bad. Draws the five hole in here and he is going to try to catch a trip and piece of the purseBuerger – Three year old son of Blue Burner who surprisingly slid into the finals when other horses weren’t entered. Has raced well against the NW2 with mostly off the pace efforts. Drawing the 6 hole I would predict that he would employ a similar strategy and hope for a heated pace battle so he can grab a piece of the purse. PassChazmichaelmichael – This son of Custard the Dragon has had a nice three year old season after being unraced at two. He almost ended Major Custard’s winning streak in his latest only losing by a neck after a perfect steer from Hennessy. Drawing the 7 hole will make this trip much tougher. I predict he will duck off the gate and hope for some flow to develop so he can catch a good piece of this purseTrip Hammer – Another one who has had a frustrating season in 2020. This son of Trust the Artist started the season very strong but lately he has only been able to pick up pieces. He has had a few troubled trips and could easily have carded more than the $23,000.00 he has earned in 2020. Draws the 8 hole in this final and is going to need some luck to get more than a minor share in hereHorse – This son of Vertical Horizon is the wild card in this race. He started off 2020 struggling to find his form but as the season has gone on his form has improved. He draws the 9 hole which makes this an interesting trip. In the past his preferred style was off the pace but the past couple weeks he has been much more forwardly placed. My call is for a top 3 finishSelections1-9-7Best Bet of the DayMajor Custard (11th)Longshots with a ChanceBlue Star Raquel (5th) and Past Affair (10th)Here’s hoping we get better weather than forecasted and some great safe racing. Good luck and I hope you cash many tickets! ................
