WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE?

Students desiring to live more moral lives must understand current moral issues if they wish to resist temptation and persuade others to live virtuously in our increasingly secular culture. Christ called His followers to the Great Commission, evangelization that takes on increased meaning in our current Culture Wars. Whether called to marriage, a religious vocation, church ministry, or missionary work, integrating faith with reason is the key to winning hearts and changing the face of this world. Students majoring in health care, psychology, sociology, theology, philosophy, communication, biology, youth ministry, and many more fields will find this among the most relevant of IWE classes.

Q: Why take a religion course?

A: As Christians we should be less worried about getting TOPS credit and more worried about getting to THE top! As our Pier Giorgio says, Verso l'alto! ("Toward the top!")

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course evaluates the nature of sin and the call to virtue, born of humility and a Christ-centered concept of self. The role of free will, Natural Law, and concupiscence in determining motive and choice is evaluated. A detailed analysis is made of the seven deadly sins and the opposing virtues that lead to holiness and happiness. The major moral issues of our day—abortion, the death penalty, contraception, Just War theory, homosexuality, bioethics, end-of-life decisions (euthanasia and suicide), drug legalization, and virginity—are evaluated according to the teachings of the Magisterium and sound reasoning. Special emphasis is placed on the need for sexual purity, appropriate dating, a healthy view of marriage, the proper and good view of marital sexuality, and the need to develop a strong Plan of Life in order to face and conquer the self in the modern world. Articles, songs and skits are carefully chosen and are used as the basis of homework assignments and classroom evaluation. Frequent reference is made to Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), John Paul II's timely encyclical. As part of their grade and daily assignments, students are expected to make a daily evaluation of conscience, using a handout given in class and passages from The Way by St. Jose Maria Escriva.

DELICATE SUBJECT MATTER?

This class touches on issues of a sensitive nature with honesty and frankness, yet fully in line with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. To confront and overcome the modern world, Christians have to understand the anti-Christian worldview. Parents who want their children to be equipped to argue against the wrongness of homosexuality, contraception, abortion, pornography, pre-marital sex, and sex education should enroll their children in this class. NO discussion of a student's personal morality is allowed, as this remains the sole domain of the parent-child and priest-penitent dialog. Parents are invited to attend any class.
