Community
Central Dauphin School District is located northeast of the city of Harrisburg in a suburban setting. It encompasses an area of 118 square miles and is comprised of four townships; Lower Paxton, Middle Paxton, Swatara and West Hanover, and three municipalities; Dauphin, Paxtang, and Penbrook. The approximate population for the community is 83,000 with a current student population of nearly 12,000. The students attend one of 13 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 2 senior high schools. Students are transported from urban, suburban, and rural areas. The District is comprised of students from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
School
Central Dauphin East High School, established in 1961, is a four year comprehensive, public high school with an enrollment of 1,360 students. The building is fully accredited by Middle Atlantic States Association--1967, 1977, 1987, 1997 and 2007. Central Dauphin East High School is comprised of students from 35 countries who speak 23 different languages.
Curriculum
Central Dauphin School District operates on a semester cycle school year. All students must complete the following credits for graduation: four credits of English, three credits of Social Studies, three credits of Science, four credits of Math, two credits of Arts and Humanities, two credits of Physical Education, one-half credit of Health, six credits of electives and a graduation project worth one-half credit. Students are offered an extensive curriculum featuring Honors/Advanced Placement courses in English, U.S. History, World History, Psychology, European History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, Spanish, French, Latin, German U. S. Government & Politics and Music Theory. Advanced courses are also offered in the areas of History, Biology II, Organic Chemistry, Calculus, Algebra, Probability and Statistics, and Foreign Language.
Course Levels
Central Dauphin School District uses a weighted grading system determined by a specific course level. Advanced Placement courses are level three, which is given a weight of 1.08. Advanced courses that are considered the most difficult of the College Preparatory Curriculum are level two, which is given a weight of 1.04. All other courses are level one, which carries the weight of 1.00. Specific course levels are found on the transcript preceding the course title.
Special Programs
Work Experience Co-Op - Seniors who have met credit requirements may participate in this program of half day school, half day work.
Creative Arts Independent Study - Seniors who are interested in developing an awareness of the relationship of the creative process in society, culture and self, as well as, for those desiring a career in the Fine Arts.
Independent Study—Independent Study is for seniors who are advanced in the desired course and must be scheduled with permission from the teacher. One area is the creative arts area which encompasses the disciplines of visual art, music, writing, drama, dance, and video production.
Vocational Education - Central Dauphin School District is a member of and provides the largest student enrollment at Dauphin County Technical School.
Gifted Education - Identified students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate in a program of independent study. Students are often involved in internships related to these studies outside of the school hours
