JOB DESCRIPTIONJob title:Deputy Director of CommunicationsReports to:Director of CommunicationsDirect reports: Up to 4Salary: London: ?50-55,000Location: London SummaryThe Deputy Director of Communications is a key position within the organisation that assists the Director of Communications in ensuring strategic and effective communications to drive campaign impact, fundraising and organisational profile.Key responsibilities and accountabilitiesStrategy DevelopmentPlay a lead role in developing Global Witness’ campaign communications strategies including building a complete understanding of Global Witness’ campaign targets and markets, audiences and ensuring strategic approaches to influence them effectivelyLead Global Witness’ news and media strategy, working with teams to drive a proactive news approach, spotting opportunities, selling journalists unique story ideas, and stimulating media commentary and debate.Understand and define all core media audiences based on insight and experience With Director of Communications, protect the?organisation’s reputation, including development of crisis management strategies and protocols, and managing risk.Help build organisation’s ability to react to its external environment to both capitalise on campaign opportunities and mitigate risk.Management and leadership:Provide leadership and management to a team of skilled team senior communication advisorsUndertake annual performance appraisals and regular 1:1’s for direct reportsBe responsible for signing off communications outputs, working closely with campaigns and legal teams and other key stakeholdersIdentify and drive best practice and innovation within the communications and campaigns teams, including fostering consistent, constructive culture of learning.Play a leadership role in the broader communications team and organisation, helping to instil healthy, productive ways of working, shared vision and to help ensure smooth and integrated working with other teams. DeliveryEnsure all Global Witness communications are of a consistently high and professional standard, putting in place right systems and processes to do thisDevelop and manage key media partnerships and relationships as required, maintaining comprehensive knowledge of influential outlets.Oversee development and delivery of high impact, innovative media moments which deliver on campaign and broader organisational objectivesHelp ensure Global Witness’s external voice and identity is consistent, powerful, innovative, impactful, and properly reflects Global Witness’ values and ethos, work, impact and aspirations as an organisationRepresent the organisation publicly and in the media as requiredAdvise on budget requirements and operate within the budget availableWays of working and collaboratingWork collaboratively with colleagues across Global Witness to collectively deliver our mission, vision and aimsMake a positive contribution to the team and the wider organisation by playing an active role in organisation-wide working groups and meetingsDemonstrate a strong commitment to creating an inclusive, equal and diverse workplaceWork within Global Witness’ policies, processes and procedures at all timesOtherAny other duties equal to the skills and responsibilities required for this role as directed by the Director of CommunicationsThis role is based in London with occasional travel overseasPerson specificationsEssential requirementsFirst-rate media operator and campaigner, with significant experience delivering communications strategies which get both campaign results and raises organisational profile Displays an excellent news sense, with the ability to capitalise on a breaking story or campaign opportunity while anticipating and managing risk Demonstrable writing and broadcast skills and a proven ability to think creativelyCalm outlook, strong diplomatic and negotiating skills, in particular experience of working towards cross-organisational initiatives and reconciling different perspectives Displays an understanding and knowledge of different audiences, media formats and demonstrable ability to pitch news storiesTop-level strategic thinking and planning skills, including ability to set priorities, manageable work-plans and work within budgetsExperience of crisis management, including identifying issues which involve operational and reputational risk?An excellent knowledge of the global media environment, combined with excellent contacts to bring to the job and proven networking skillsProven track record in meeting deadlines and possesses strong prioritisation skills particularly when working under pressure on a number of projects Displays excellent leadership qualities, including experience of motivating and managing othersTenacious, persuasive team-player with a passion for and understanding of the issues?Global Witness campaigns on DesirableProficient in least one other language Working knowledge of digital and multimedia strategies ................
