A Brief History of Conroe ISD

In 1886, the Conroe Public School's first classes were opened in a one-room school constructed of rough lumber near the present community of Beach. It was called Conroe Mill School and was open each year for a five-month term. The first African American school was located in the Central Baptist Church at Madeley Quarters. The Conroe Independent School District was created by the Commissioners Court of Montgomery County, Texas, July 12, 1892, by consolidating the 12 Common School Districts surrounding Conroe. This area covered 25 square miles. The 39th Legislature of the State of Texas in 1925 mandated the enlargement of the District by keeping intact the already defined 25 square miles and adding numerous other surrounding school areas, bringing the District to 333 square miles. On June 22, 1992, the annexation of 7,781 acres of Magnolia Independent School District increased the Conroe ISD to the current size of 348.09 square miles.

Prior to the 1925 consolidation, few rural children were able to attend high school. The first graduating class of Conroe High School, one male and three female students, received their diplomas in 1902. At the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, Conroe ISD welcomed students to its 31 elementary schools, 4 K-6 schools, 10 intermediate schools, 7 junior high schools, 3 ninth grade schools, 7 high schools, 3 alternative education placement centers, and 3 academies located within high schools.

Conroe Independent School District has made major strides since its rural beginning in 1886, becoming one of the fastest growing school districts in the nation. Currently CISD has approximately 67,000 students and 10,000+ employees. Conroe ISD grows by approximately 1,500 students per year.

Certification Level Content Test Considerations

EC-6* Must pass the Core Subjects EC-6 to teach any subject in grades PK to 6th, including P.E. and Fine Arts.

4-8*

At this level, there are options from which to choose. If the Core Subjects 4-8 is passed, any core subject in grades 4-8 may be taught. In many schools with these grades, teachers are required to teach more than one subject. By testing in single content areas for grades 4-8, the teacher is limited to one subject

which may reduce the number of opportunities for which to be considered.

7-12 Must pass the content area test for the subject to be taught.

Special Education EC-12

For new special education teachers who will provide grades in core content areas, the special education test as well as the content area test for the subject to be taught must be passed. Passing the Core Subjects EC-6 or 4-8 will enable the teacher to teach any subject within the range of the test(s) taken. For grades 7-12, in addition to passing the special education test, the content area test must also be passed. In situations where a teacher in grades 7-12 is not providing grades in core content areas, but is providing in-class support, then only the Special Education EC-12 test is required.

* Beginning 1/1/2021, the Science of Teaching Reading is an additional required test for Core Subjects EC-6, Core Subjects 4-8, ELAR or ELAR/ SS 4-8, and the Early Childhood: PK-3 exams. Certification requirements may be subject to change, so stay informed by remaining in contact with your Educator Preparation Program.
