FORT PIERRE, SOUTH DAKOTA, NAMED A TOP TEN WESTERN TOWN

BY TRUE WEST MAGAZINE!

Rancher Roy Rogers Newman and his wife Edith helped blaze the trail from Fort Pierre to Deadwood back in the 1870s. Today, a museum that he helped found—the Verendrye—has continued his efforts to remember and preserve the history of the area.

That’s why Fort Pierre is #6 among True West Magazine’s 2010 Top True Western Towns. Virginia City, Nevada, won the top award. The True Western Towns will be featured in the January/February 2010 issue, at newsstands on January 6, 2010.

Fort Pierre is being recognized for numerous efforts. The National Park Service and the South Dakota State Historical Society partnered on a travel itinerary of the city’s 37 historic sites. Meanwhile, the State Historic Preservation Office has designed more than 30 signs to designate historic sites in the area. The city of Fort Pierre is working to set up tours of those historic locations.

In addition, local companies offer canoe trips (a la the explorers), wagon train trips and horseback trips throughout the area.

“Fort Pierre celebrates an amazing history that goes back to Lewis and Clark,” says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. “The town has kept the history of the trails alive through trail rides, museums and more. The work is outstanding.”

True West editors determine winners for this annual award based on criteria demonstrating how each town has preserved its history through old buildings, museums and other institutions, events and promotions of historic resources.

The feature includes Towns to Watch for their good works in historic preservation and several legendary locales that folks should know.

True West magazine is in its 57th year of leading the way in presenting the true stories of Old West adventure, history, culture and preservation. For subscriptions and more information, visit or call 888-687-1881.
