He graduated from the ETSU Clinical Psychology doctoral program in 2016 and completed his pre-doctoral internship in pediatric psychology at Denver Health Medical Center. His professional interests include adapting evidence based interventions for primary care and BHC training. Description: The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force and American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening adolescents for depression in primary care. However, multiple questions arise when starting this screening process in a clinic: Who scores the screener? What do we do with teens who score high? What if a teen marks they are suicidal? Do we get paid for the screener? This talk will explore a protocol for implementing the PHQ-9 in an integrated pediatric clinic in Tennessee and provide preliminary data on documentation, PHQ-9 scores, and reimbursement.Learning Objectives: Describe one model of incorporating a Behavioral Health Consultant into a depression screening protocol in primary care.Identify the top two evidence based adolescent depression screeners.Discussion Questions:What challenges have you encountered when attempting to start screeners in your clinic and what have you done to overcome those challenges? What is the best way to treat depressed teens in primary care? How do you decide which patients to treat via brief interventions in primary care vs. those you refer to specialty mental health? What brief treatment approaches do you use?
