GOV. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER SALUTES PGA SECTIONS FOR EVENTS SURROUNDING GOLF; CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY AND SENATE DECLARE MAY 19 AS ‘PLAY GOLF AMERICA DAY’
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Through formal resolution, the California State Assembly and Senate both declared May 19, 2006, as “Play Golf America Day” throughout the state. The Legislature also acknowledged the community-based event held that day at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, in Sacramento, Calif., that attracted more than 1,200 golf enthusiasts. The “Play Golf America Day” served as a premier venue in support of PGA Free Lesson Month. In addition, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recognized Californians for their involvement in golf.
“Today, thousands of Californians will come together to play the wonderful game of golf,” said
Gov. Schwarzenegger. “By promoting physical activity, wholesome competition and sportsmanship, golf exemplifies the many benefits we derive from athletics. As a former professional athlete myself,
I can appreciate the determination it takes to learn a difficult sport like golf. That is why I am proud to welcome enthusiasts and casual golfers alike to the beautiful Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.”
The resolutions from the State Legislature referenced that golf is open to players from all backgrounds and ability levels, teaches core values and sportsmanship, contributes to the business commerce of California, creates jobs and also recognizes golf’s value as a favorable family activity.
“We are pleased to have representatives at the state level supporting our efforts through Play Golf America,” said Chris Thomas, executive director of the Northern California PGA Section. “Golf is an important sport throughout the state of California and the country. That’s why we encourage everyone to visit to find their local PGA Professional and to Play Golf America!”

Golfers turned out en masse at Haggin Oaks to receive free 10-minute lessons from PGA Professionals who volunteered in support of Play Golf America, an initiative designed to bring new players to the game and former players back to the sport. Each attendee also received a free golf club, presented by Wilson Golf; had the opportunity for a free custom club fitting; and were able to trade in their old clubs with credit towards purchasing new equipment at the Haggin Oaks Golf Super Shop.
Vince Howell conducted a long-drive exhibition courtesy of Cobra/Pinnacle. The Play Golf America Day was presented by Nicklaus Golf and the Livermore Valley Wine Country Championship, with additional support from The PGA of America, NCPGA, NCGA, CGCSA, USGA, EWGA and the California Alliance for Golf. The event had the presence of several top equipment manufacturers including: Callaway Golf, Cobra, Nicklaus Golf, Nike Golf, MacGregor, Ping, Pinnacle, Titleist and Top Flite/Hogan, each displaying some of the hottest products in the marketplace.
“I salute the supporters and organizers of this event for encouraging Americans to engage in healthy activity and spend a day of recreation with friends and family,” the governor added.
In addition to California, PGA Professionals in every state are offering free 10-minute golf lessons to golfers of all ability levels throughout the month of May, as part of PGA Free Lesson Month by logging on to . The initiative is a partnership between The PGA of America, Golf Digest, Golf For Women and The Golf Channel. Nike Golf served as the official sponsor.
Celebrating its 90th anniversary, The PGA of America was founded in 1916, and is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the game of golf, while continuing to enhance the standards of the profession. The Association is comprised of more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals who are dedicated to growing participation in the game of golf.
