Speech! Contemporary Problems & Solutions

Purpose: To persuade your audience.  Know the facts, and convince your audience to feel the same way as you do about a topic!! As you can imagine, the list of topics is endless! This speech can be on any topic that you are comfortable with but you must get teacher approval before researching!

Time Limit: At least 2 minutes, but NO LONGER than 5 minutes

Delivery: You will deliver your speech using note cards ONLY (and audiovisual aids). It is expected that you rarely need to look at your note cards, as you will have rehearsed many times!!

Speech! Contemporary Problems & Solutions

Research, prepare, and present an informational and persuasive 5-minute speech. In your speech, describe the causes and consequences of a contemporary problem, and then explain 1-3 possible solutions for that problem.

Steps

• Read the starter articles on your assigned topic. Take notes on the articles. You may take notes on separate paper, which must be turned in with this packet.

• Find two additional sources about your topic (hint: start with the website listed on the first page of this assignment rubric). Take notes on these sources in the same place that you took notes on the starter articles. Be sure to record your sources.

• Write an outline for your speech. Use both outlines in this packet.

• Write your speech. You must do this in Microsoft Word, in MLA Format. Remember to include the cause(s) of the problem, the consequence(s) of the problem including who it affects and why we should care, and solution(s) to the problem and why the solution(s) will work.

• Write the Works Cited section for your speech, including your starter articles and the additional sources that you found. Put this in the same document with your speech.

• Write notes for your speech on index cards or a separate piece of paper, and print out a copy of your speech to use as you give the speech. This is what you will hold in your hands as you address the class. You must turn your speech in prior to giving speech, Report Cover Necessary

• Practice your speech. You do not have to memorize it, but you should be able to give the speech with only minimal notes, rather than merely reading the text of the speech.

• Prepare a visual aid PowerPoint with visuals and no more than 7 words per slide. Max 5 slides.

• Give your speech in class.

• Take notes on the speeches given by other students, and ask questions when called on.

Project Requirements:

1. Choosing a Topic: You will select your own school-appropriate topic on an social issue, persuade an audience of middle-school students.

2. Speech Outline: You must conduct your research and use this to complete the Speech Outline paper. This is to guide your thoughts….you are to transfer onto note cards for the final presentation.

- At least Three main points are needed, with supporting details for each point.

- Outline material is to be transferred to note cards ONLY!!

4. Printed Visual Aids: You must use at least one visual in your speech.

5. Rhetorical Devices: Your speech must include all 7 studied rhetorical devices. Antithesis, symbolism, hyperbole, parallelism, Metaphor, alliteration, and allusion
