Junior High Social Studies Weekly Current Events Assignments:

Junior High Social Studies Weekly Current Events Assignments:

1. Assignments must be turned in on the assigned due date, handwritten in blue or black ink and on loose leaf paper. Writing should be neat and free from grammar and spelling errors. Think twice before you turn in a messy paper! It is okay to rewrite something neatly.

2. Current events assignments must be headed properly according to Miss Orr’s directions for heading papers.

3. Students, having signed the internet user forms, must use the internet appropriately, only using websites or other media sources that relate to the subject. Consequences for not staying on task or for misusing the computer lab equipment include a loss of internet privileges at school.

4. Current Event articles may come from a variety of media sources, but throughout the semester, you must have used at least one of the following:

• Newspaper:

~Both general sections and editorials

~Local and national newspapers

• Magazine articles (online or hard copy),

• Online news (i.e. , , etc.). Assignments written from an actual TV show must be backed up with the corresponding article online or in the newspaper. (For example if you watch a 2 minute segment on CNN about an issue, you need to find the same story online or in the newspaper and have both sources cited).

• Interviews or speakers can also be used but are not required.

5.) Articles must be based on topics which would be good cause for discussion in social studies class. Politics, elections, natural disasters, wars, etc., local happenings (good and bad) are all fine subjects to use. However, the Red’s losing streak or the latest pets for adoption are not acceptable topics.

6. ALL Current Events periodicals must be cited. Use as a reference. You will lose ten points if your source is not cited.

7. Current events assignments will count for 25 points. There will be at least one a week that you will be responsible for turning in on the assigned due date. Many times Miss Orr will give a specific topic for you to research in addition to an article of your own choosing.

8. All Current Events assignments must include the following:

i. 7 W’s of Social Studies (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How, and Why is it important?)

ii. A brief summary of the article IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

iii. About a paragraph summarizing your opinion of the article: What you learned, what you were surprised about, if you thought the author’s bias came through his writing, how you feel about the subject, what you think might happen as a result of this event.

iv. *Sometimes you may need to research the background information to help you understand the situation more thoroughly. Or you might need to find another article on the same or similar topic if the one you found gives you very little information. (e.g. An article that is only three sentences long)

9. These should be somewhere between ¾ - 1 page long.

10. Here are some websites to help you get started:
