Dear Youth and Parents, - Razor Planet

Dear Youth Parents,

I am excited about this upcoming year of youth ministry here at Calera Baptist Church. Our new youth team is in place, which includes the following parents of youth: Meloni Rhodes, Wayne Butler, Cory Crowe, Tammi Crowe, and Harry Green. In addition, we have four students serving on a youth leadership team who will meet regularly with me and the other team members. These students who were selected by small group teachers and leaders include: Caleb Crowe, Stephen Ellison, Anna Virginia Seabury, and Michael Green.

Our small group leaders who will be teaching our youth “Life Groups” each Sunday night between now and the end of April are Wayne Butler, Sam Domino, Cory Crowe, Tammi Crowe and Tricia Schmid. These “Life Groups” range between 4 and 10 students and offer so much to our teenagers that the big group dynamic cannot offer. They provide accountability, encouragement, and more intense study of God’s word. These groups provide different topics and are broken up according to gender and age. They also form strong bonds between students and other students and between teachers and students. Consequently, we have another shepherd-like figure in the life of teenagers to help get them and keep them on the right path. What joy this should bring to the hearts of you parents. I know you will want to get them to Calera Baptist Church on Sunday nights from 5pm to 6pm.

Until Easter, we will be studying through the book of Galatians on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 7:30. However, I open the gym up for basketball and other games at 5:30pm. Wednesday nights bring a balance of fun, fellowship, games, worship, Bible teaching, and sometimes food.

I would like to do food every Wednesday possible, however we need some more adult volunteers. I also need a few more adults in the youth room on Wednesday nights. In addition, I am always looking and praying for God to bring us good teachers. “Life Groups” will always be a number one focus of mine as long as I minister here at Calera Baptist Church. However, they cannot be effective without Godly mentors and teachers.

So, please pray about where you can serve in our youth ministry—parents and students. Look at the event calendar for February and March and please look to help. The same parents are doing all the work and are being worn out. However, I take much of the blame for that. I often have to seek volunteers outside of our youth ministry. Bill and Tanya Wilson are hosting our Super Bowl Party. Heather Edwards has been helping plan a Lock-in. Sam Domino and Tricia Schmid are teaching Life Groups. All of these adults have small children, but before you criticize, please ask yourself, “What am I doing to help?” I am giving you an open invitation to come on Wednesday nights to chaperone, give ideas and help carry out ministry. Our youth team is currently seeking volunteers to help with our Youth Disciple Now Weekend in the areas of food, transportation, cleaning, host homes, registration, games and more.

In conclusion, I want to be more effective this year communicating to students and parents. Please help me by signing up on our youth email list on the website—ministries/youth. It is very easy and only takes a couple of clicks. You will also need to do a search and sign up on our Calera Baptist Youth Face book page. I will list all events on the youth page of the website and on the Calera Baptist Youth fan page. I will also send out emails to the youth list, hang flyers, mail letters, and post announcements in the church bulletin. Please parents, be proactive and help your teenagers understand the importance of church and Calera Baptist youth. You and I have an important responsibility to train and disciple teenagers. And, it is scary to think that we will give an account one day of how we did. Let’s work together to raise up a strong army of students who love Jesus and who are committed to His perfect will and purpose. My cell phone number is 205-354-3787. Please call or text anytime. Also, call me to make sure I have your cell phone number. I send out text messages to parents and students, and may need to call you for something.

Sincerely,

Stephen Cannon
