I. Introduction

Developmental Psych. is a course that covers changes which occur over the entire lifespan. It is focused on the major factors of social, cognitive, physical and personality development. The topics have direct application in areas such as teaching, nursing, parenting, etc.

No one should be in this class without having successfully completed general psychology.

II. Objectives

A. Cognitive

1. Explain the nature of human development (integration outcome 0.1)

2. Describe the determinants of development

3. Describe the sequence of prenatal dev.

4. Elaborate on the concept of maturation

5. Describe the process of language acquisition

6. Explain the process of moral development

7. Discuss Piaget's theory of intellect

8. Analyze the influence of sex roles on dev.

9. List some of the conflicts in adolescence

10. Contrast the concept of maturity from early, to middle, to late adulthood.

B. Affective

1. Value the diverse possible courses of development

2. Empathize with people who experienced an abnormal course of development (diversity outcome 4.1)

3. Appreciate the complexity of Human development

B. Behavioral

1. To develop skills related to working in groups on tasks

2. To develop academic writing skills (APA style) (communication outcome 3.1)

3. Be able to use psychological theories to critically analyze behavior (critical thinking outcome 2.2)

4. Be able to apply theories to modify maladaptive behavior (individual awareness outcome 6.1)

Textbook: Human Development by Feldman

Methods: You will have a variety of experiences this quarter as we work toward these goals.

Lectures will be given to clarify and expand on the text. You are advised to take good notes.

Discussion and questions are encouraged and should be viewed as an opportunity to clarify points.

Group work will be an integral part of your learning experience.

Videotapes and other media will be used when applicable.

Blackboard may be used for some group discussion, some assignment submission and class documents.

Assessment:

Exams: will be given 3 times during the quarter. Each exam will be composed of a combination of multiple choice and essay questions and worth a total of 50 points. Exams will be announced at least a week in advance. No make-up exams will be given.

Group activities and Public Service Announcement will be added for a total of 50 possible points. None of these assignments can be submitted late.

Group project: There will be a Major group presentation and writing project that we will work on during the quarter that will be an evaluation experience. This project will be worth a total of 50 points.

Pop Quizzes and homework assignments: There will be a number of unannounced “pop” quizzes given over the course of the quarter and homework assignments. These will be worth a total of 50 points. No make-up quizzes will be given

The basis of your grade is the highest 5 of the 6 possible subtotal scores.

Total points needed for each letter grade:

A 225 and above

A- 200-224

B+ 195-199

B 185-194

B- 180-184

C+ 175-179

C 165-174

C- 160-164

D+ 155-159

D 145-154

D- 140-145

F below 140
