Forensic Files Due: May 5, 2014

Case Study Notebook

Purpose: One of the goals of this course is to help you become familiar with Forensic Science topics in the news. This will help you see the relevance of what we are doing in

class. For this project, you will collect, read, and evaluate newspaper, news magazine, and internet articles.

A. The Collection: You must collect 20 articles over the semester. Each article must be related to an aspect of Forensic Science that will be studied this semester. The articles must be approximately 350 words. The articles must come from a reputable source. For each article you must do the following:

*The article must be mounted on a page or pages of paper kept in a loose-

leaf 3 ring binder. Use glue or tape- but NOT staples. Neatness counts.

*Each entry must have your name, the date of the case/event and source of the article typed at the top of the page (not the date you printed the article).

*Each article must be summarized on a 3 x 5 or 4x6 note-card that is

mounted on the following page. Summary should be 5-7 complete

sentences. See the back of sheet for note-card example. (does not have to be typed)

B. The Analysis: Once you have collected your articles, you will complete the following:

1. Create a title page for your Forensic Files Notebook.

2. Organize the articles in the order listed with summaries.

3. Create a Table of Contents for your articles.

4. Choose one of the following: must be typed

a. Pick three articles that interested you the most and write a 2 page essay on why you found them interesting.

b. Write a 2 page essay explaining to me what you learned from keeping a case study notebook.

(Times New Roman 12 pt font, double space, 1 inch margins all around)

C. The Evaluation: The Case Study Notebook will be count as a 250 point test grade. Each article/summary will be worth 10 points. The 2 page essay will be worth 25 points. The last 25 points will count for title page, table of contents, organization, etc. It is very important that you get started right away! (

Key Notes:

*All articles must have a title.

*DO NOT use articles/cases from class.

*Must detail a crime/case- not just information/encyclopedia, etc.

*You may cut & paste from “Crime Library” & other sources and put into a Word document.

Fingerprints

“Fingerprint Solves Murder Case”

Jessie Jones was found brutally murdered in his home. Apparently someone broke into the home through a basement window. A partial print was found and lifted from the window pane of the Jones’ home. The print was then entered into the national fingerprint database AFIS. A match for the partial print was found to belong to John Smith. Mr. Smith was then arrested. His trial is set to begin September 3, 2008.
