Time Commitment:Two to three hours per week for the 2017-18 academic year, including an hour-long weekly meeting (day and time TBD based on availability of the group).Mission:COPE hopes to facilitate a strong connection between the Counseling Center and Holy Cross students through outreach programs designed to increase student awareness of mental health issues and reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. Through direct programming and primary prevention efforts, COPE provides education and resources. COPE seeks to promote emotional well-being among Holy Cross students and to help them resolve stressful situations when they arise. As a peer education group, COPE does not engage in peer counseling.Description:COPE is an integral part of a team effort to address emotional well-being on campus through creating programs that enhance the quality of mental health in the student body. As a member of COPE you are viewed as a role model to other students and will work in collaboration with the Counseling Center staff to achieve several goals. One goal of the program is primary prevention, which is any activity that aims to promote or maintain emotional well-being and to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. Another goal of the program is secondary prevention, which serves to address problems that currently exist through early identification and appropriate referral. COPE members will achieve these goals through outreach, programming, and peer education efforts.Training:Following initial orientation training, which will occur before the start of the Fall 2017 semester, Peer Educators attend weekly planning meetings and monthly training seminars focused on psychological topics relevant to college students. Through relevant readings and discussions, peer educators will learn about a wide variety of mental health and adjustment issues impacting college students. Such topics may include: depression, anxiety, stress management, suicide prevention, relaxation training, coming out, sleep hygiene, time management, first generation college students, homesickness, disordered eating, etc. Ongoing training will occur throughout the year during our weekly meetings and through attendance of campus and community conferences, workshops, and programs.
