Gradebook - Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Weighted Grading Gradebook is a module for Stellar that can help manage the grading process for a course. The tool is designed to enter assignments and exams into gradebook and then enter each student’s grades for these assignments and exams throughout the semester. A cumulative score is calculated throughout the semester for each student based on the current grades. One important option available in the tool is weighted grading. Weighted grading allows professor to set different values of importance for each assignment and exam to calculate each student’s cumulative score throughout the semester and help determine the students’ final grades.Weight values for assignments and exams are not percentages that total to 100 percent but can add up to any arbitrary total in gradebook. The cumulative score for each student is automatically created using the following formula:Cumulative Score (CS) = Total Grade (TG)/ Total Weight (TW)Total Grade (TG) = SUM of all (score/max points*weight)Total Weight (TW) = SUM of all weights for all gradesHere are some examples of grading situation and how the system calculates the grades as weighted or not weighted.Example Course A:Max points (MP)Weight (W)Score (S)Homework 1201018Homework 2101010Homework 31510Exam 110020Homework 4510Homework 53010Exam 210030Total Weight100Weighted GradeHere only two assignments have grades for the student. So at this point the weighted average is:((18/20 * 10) =9+ (10/10 * 10))=10/ (10 + 10) =20=.95((S/MP* W)+ ( S/MP* W))/ TW) = CSOR(9 + 10)= 19/20=.95TG/TW= CSWithout Weighted GradingWithout using weighted grading the students cumulative score would be:(18+10)/ (20+10) = .93Total Score (TS)/ Total Points (TP)=CSExample Course B:Max Points (MP)Weight (W)Score (S)Homework 12010Homework 210108Homework 31510Homework 45105Homework 53010Exam 11003090Exam 210040Total Weight120Weighted GradeHere three assignments have grades for the student. So at this point the weighted average is:((8/10 * 10)= 8+ (5/5 * 10)= 10+(90/100 *30)=27/(10+10 + 30) =50=.95((S/MP* W)+(S/MP* W)+( S/MP *W)/ TW) = CSOR(8+10+27)=45 /50= .90TG/TW= CSWithout Weighted Grading(0+8+5+90)/ (10+5+100) =.89TS/ TP =CSExample Course C:Max Points (MP)Weight (W)Score (S)Homework 120100Homework 210108Homework 31510Homework 45105Homework 53010Exam 11003090Exam 210040Total Weight120Weighted GradeHere the same scores were given for certain assignments, but a zero grade was entered for an assignment (perhaps because the due date was missed). This makes the weighted average ((0/10 * 10)= 0+(8/10 * 10)+( 5/5 * 10)= 10+(90/100 * 30))=27/(10+10+10 + 30) =50=.75=.95((S/MP* W)+(S/MP* W)+( S/MP * W)+( S/MP * W))/ TW) = CSOR(0+8+10+27)= 45/50= .75TG/TW= CSWithout Weighted Grading(0+8+5+90)/ (10+10+5+100) =.82TS/ TP =CS ................
